In all the years of being an iPhone user, I never knew I had an app for this! Podcasts steamed for FREE!

Anyone have some recommendations for a newbie? Particularly something funny

OP posts:
MissBridgetJones · 28/04/2019 08:17

The Midult

Fun, girl chat

Blackandwhitehorse · 28/04/2019 08:26

Table Manners with Jessie Ware and her mum is hilarious and great if you’re a foodie

TheFatberg · 28/04/2019 08:33

Blackandwhitehorse I'd really like them to do a cookbook.

On Mumsnet there is a section I Topics called Podcasts.
Lots of recommendations there.
OP, once you have exhausted the excellent suggestions here just use your search bar and you may find some unexpected gems.
Just time in your interests eg films. Exercise. Health, comedy, true crime, politics, etc. There's stuff for children as well.

Autumnchill · 28/04/2019 08:46

Not sure if anyone's mentioned Dr Death yet but that's good and Who the Hell is Hamish, true story about a scammer. Basically any by Wondery are good, just started listening to I, Survivor and love This Imagined Life, we listen to it on long car journeys and try to guess who they're describing.

Also just binge listened Crime Junkie, similar to My Favourite Murder but without swearing and you actually get to hear the crime and a new one Running from Cops, really interesting about reality cop show in America

I need some new ones as I listen at work so can go through them quite quickly

Portulaca · 28/04/2019 08:49

My favourites -

Books with Jen - the author and Booktuber Jen Campbell interviews authors - it's all very informal and chatty. Lovely. This one's on Stitcher.

Backlisted - another bookish podcast.

Fortunately with Fi and Jane - on BBC Sounds. I love this - addictive.

Brain of Britain - good brain stretcher from BBC Sounds.

Death in Ice Valley - an unsolved murder case in Norway. Was very interesting.

Teacher's Pet - fascinating. I think it's still available here but not in Australia as the trial is imminent.

How to Fail - Elizabeth Day interviews various people about stuff they've got wrong in their lives. Just started listening to this one and like it a lot.

lovelyupnorth · 28/04/2019 08:54

Another vote for Fish and the bbc Friday night comedy.

The ones i listens to a lot are

Meaning Money Podcast
Cashchats with Andy Web
Money to the Masses

Also quite like rugby so listens to House of Rugby from Joe.

Tidy2018 · 28/04/2019 08:56

If you click on "Categories", you will find comedies list. I also search "BBC".

gassylady · 28/04/2019 08:59

What app is this where do I find it on my iPhone - my help me spend less time reading and posting here Grin

Pinkarsedfly · 28/04/2019 09:00

I love Radio Lab and Love and Radio. Just really fascinating stories and investigations. The Love and Radio episode about near-death experiences was absolutely fascinating.

Pinkarsedfly · 28/04/2019 09:01

Also In Our Time and History Extra.

I also love Athletico Mince. Bob Mortimer loosely talking about football. I have zero interest in football but I love the podcast.

DonkeyHohtay · 28/04/2019 09:03

Help I Sexted my Boss is very funny too but quite sweary and not for listening to in the car with kids.

Lots of stuff out there, I am quite partial to a bit of drama too. Currently listening to Blackout which is shaping up very nicely.

namechangedbutneedadvice · 28/04/2019 09:11

I've recently discovered podcasts too and love them!!! Athletico Mince is funny, I love Bob Mortimer! Also really recommend the Adam Buxton podcasts. They're funny and interesting but I also find them quite relaxing.

whycantIthinkofadecentusername · 28/04/2019 09:39

I've only recently discovered them too. After owning an iPhone for about 10 years I'm listening to a few at the minute. Shagged, Married, Annoyed, Women at Work, Unlocking the Magic as we're taking DS to Florida this year and many that relate to my profession.

It's great to be sat at work, working on a project and listening to these.

MrsJackRackham · 28/04/2019 11:39

The Doorstep Murder is very good, BBC. All about the unsolved murder of a Nairn bank man.
The History of England is very detailed, it's done by a guy in his shed, it's up to episode 270 odd and we're only at Mary the First.

QueenofLouisiana · 28/04/2019 11:56

The Now Show/ The News Quiz are both good.
The boring talks- often gently humorous and mildly informative (my choice for nights when I can’t sleep- interesting but not overly stimulating).
The Teachers Pet- not funny, but very interesting, DS and I listened to it on holiday and spent hours debating it.
I also listen to fashion, makeup and style podcasts.

DeadWife · 28/04/2019 12:05

If you like reading Radio 4's A Good Read is a fave of mine.

TED talks.

You Me and the Big C, started by the fabulous late Rachael Bland & co and helped so much when a loved one was ill - for both of us.

The Bubble Hour if you want to address your drinking or just think about it.

In Our Time/Woman's Hour R4.

Casefile - true crime.

Will have to have a look at that other thread too I think.

roseinparadise · 28/04/2019 12:32

Can't beat Kermode and mayo and dessert island discs!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 28/04/2019 15:33

From the reading this thread have started listening to My Dad Wrote a Porno it’s very funny

All killa no filla

Serial series 1

David Sedaris

Shall listen to the recommendations on here’s

LadyOfTheCanyon · 28/04/2019 16:41

For silly funny Pappys Flatshare slamdown
Do the right thing
The Horne section
Mister Gameshow
For comedy talks: RHLSTP ("ruhellestuhpuh!")
Adam Buxton
The conediab's cobedian

LadyOfTheCanyon · 28/04/2019 16:42

Ffs. Comedian's comedian! That should read.

Destinysdaughter · 28/04/2019 17:08

My favourite is Chartmusic. A group of music journalists basically dissect old episodes of Top of the Pops. It’s bloody hilarious! 😀

notacooldad · 28/04/2019 17:15

I've been listening to one called "Maddie" about Madeline McCann. I found Teacher's Pet an incredible story and will be interested to see what happens at the trial this month.

icebearforpresident · 28/04/2019 17:16

*99% invisible. Covers a range of topics and the host Roman Mars, has the best voice in the world (I could listen to him all day)
*Armchair Expert with Dax Shepherd. It’s a celeb interview type but always funny and every week has an ‘experts on expert’ version which has people who are prominent in their field such as psychologists or addiction specialists
Uncover - a Canadian true crime podcast from the CBC. The first series was about that nxvim cult which the actress from smallville was involved with and the latest is about a serial killer who targeted Toronto’s gay community.
*30 for 30 podcast. This is a sport podcast based on the 30 for 30 documentary series from ESPN. I have no interest in sport other than rugby but even I have found virtually all the stories fascinating.
*Everything is Alive - interviews with inanimate objects such as a pillow, a subway seat and a can of coke. Brilliantly done

SpoonBlender · 28/04/2019 17:23

Different recommendation - since OP mentions iPhone, I'd like to commend using Overcast as your podcast player. It's got excellent subtle speedup features (snipping dead air, plus a play-faster-without-chipmunking slider) and a 'clearer voices' that's great for live podcasts and such. The "saved your time" counter on mine is over 200 hours!

It's free with non-shit ads, pay to get rid. overcast.fm/skeptics_faq
