In all the years of being an iPhone user, I never knew I had an app for this! Podcasts steamed for FREE!

Anyone have some recommendations for a newbie? Particularly something funny

OP posts:
Whowouldfardelsbear · 27/04/2019 22:46

Oh and definitely Kermode and Mayo (even if you're not a film fan)

AnyoneButAnton · 27/04/2019 22:46

If you are really into comedy then Rule of Three is very good - a pair of comedy writers talking to comedy people about something that makes them laugh. Eg Charlie Brooker on Airplane, Sue Perkins on Spinal Tap, Matt Lucas on Gerard Hoffnung. I find that every episode is either an interviewee I want to hear talking about or a subject I want to hear discussed or both.

And Kermode and Mayo are often hilarious.

TheTreeHearsYourSecret · 27/04/2019 22:50

The Allusionist, very funny,
They walk amongst us/Criminal/Casefile/Wrongful Conviction for real life murder stories
Serial
also My Favourite Murder but it very sweary
Radio 4 Woman's hour
Ted Talks
Harvard EdCast
S-Town
Stephen Fry's Great Leap Years - educational but fascinating

Podcasts keep me sane, that and audio books.

@Autumnchill I haven't. I'll have a listen. Thanks

Cooroo · 27/04/2019 23:00

My Dad Wrote a Porno
Adam Buxton - lovely bloke having rambling chats
S Town
This American Life

I also listen to The Archers via podcast because I'm never in the right place to listen live.

ImTheRealHFella · 27/04/2019 23:02

Non comedy but desert island discs and woman's hour worth a listen.

PrimrosePhantasm · 27/04/2019 23:02

cheeserolls · 27/04/2019 23:27

Grief cast by Cariad Lloyd. Awesome show.

Porno

Scummy mummies (for amusement)

Stuff you should know

You me and the Big C. Very informative and candid about cancer.

XenakisCarter · 27/04/2019 23:33

Standard Issue podcast is great - it used to be an online magazine set up(?) by Sarah Millican, among others. But now it’s a podcast. Has an array of guests - some famous, some funny. Topical conversations and musings etc. I like it.

tobee · 27/04/2019 23:37

Dear Joan and Jericha
The Now Show for comedy

There's bazillions of podcasts these days and something to suit everyone. And one often leads to another. I'm often googling "if I like x podcast, what else would I like?" And, because they're free, if you don't like them, you just stop.

You can also join Facebook groups for recommendations!

There is a podcast board on here. Hopefully, more people will know about it soon!

Threeminis · 27/04/2019 23:49

Thanks @tobee I didn't realise there was a podcast board!

stucknoue · 28/04/2019 00:07

Just listened to No such thing as a fish, also listen to a lot of BBC ones, Adam Buxton, Pod saves the world, Revisionist History, Dan Snow a bit, The Bugle, The Insight .... I love podcasts

stucknoue · 28/04/2019 00:07

Ps also a terrible insomniac

LarryGreysonsDoor · 28/04/2019 00:14

I second All Killa No Filla.
I didn’t get on with My Dad Wrote a Porno.

Drunk Women Solving Crime is great.
As is Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast.
Death in Ice Valley is a treat on headphones.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 28/04/2019 00:26

No such thing as a fish is great.

American comedy - The Dollop is my absolute favourite. So funny.

HollywoodBoulevard · 28/04/2019 00:47

There are some fab ‘deep dive’ true crime podcasts out there. They can be quite heavy going. Try:

Dirty John
Cold
Root of Evil
Something Was Wrong
Who the hell is Hamish

Basically these are all shocking tales of abusive men!

HollywoodBoulevard · 28/04/2019 00:48

Oooh, also anyone here who likes true crime, try Redhanded. Two great British ladies.

SpaceCadet4000 · 28/04/2019 01:35

Some of my favourite series for binge listening:

Dirty John- chilling real-life story of a woman who fell for a complete sociopath, completely gripping

Dr Death- similar to the above, about a psychopathic/narcissistic neurosurgeon and how he flew under the radar

The Dream- investigates MLMs

Containers- about how shipping containers have completely change the world and its economy. Sounds boring, but it's not- completely blew my mind.

Caliphate- a journalist on a quest looking to understand ISIS.

More Perfect- about the US Supreme Court.

Revisionist History- Malcolm Gladwell re-examines overlooked and misunderstood history and culture.

GeneandFred · 28/04/2019 02:04

Jules and Sarah... Very funny, easy to listen too, absolutely love it. #portsalutcrew

Answer me this is also a good one.

BetterEatCheese · 28/04/2019 02:08

BBC Birthday girls house party is brilliant

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 28/04/2019 06:21

The Mystery Show, it’s only 6 episodes long but honestly it’s one of my favourite podcasts. Most mystery type shows are about true crime and so can get a little depressing, this show isn’t that.

This American Life is also good and so is Reply All.

TheFatberg · 28/04/2019 06:24

Another vote for The Dream. Also Slow Burn is great, about Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky.

West Cork but that might be on Audible.

The High Low.

rosybell · 28/04/2019 07:39

The Scummy Mummies podcast always makes me lol

hippermiddleton · 28/04/2019 08:05

You Must Remember This isn't a funny one but if you like classic Hollywood it's a treasure trove of history, glamour, gossip, film critique and shady behaviour.

Also, Dear Joan and Jericha is hilarious if you have a strong constitution. Try not to binge all the episodes at once because rumours of a new series in 'early 2019' so far haven't come to anything.
