What is for dinner in your household today and how much per person spend?

We had homemade pizza with premade bases from the fridge and various toppings plus salad, £1.50 per head. Then yoghurt for pudding which will add another 50p or so each.

Have just worked out that per month a family of four would eat 360 meals for one in a 30 day month (3 meals a day times 4 people times 30 days)

So £1 average per person a meal = £360/month
£2 average per person a meal = £720/a month
£3 average per person a month = over £1K!!!

I did bottom of the fridge veg curry (all the old veg) with 2 tins of value tomatoes, one of kidney beans and boiled rice. I count that as free!

Aimily · 26/04/2019 19:43

Wow that's crazy... I might have to rethink my shopping habits, I was impressed I spend just under £300 a month on household shop for 2 of us (this includes cleaning and sanity products)

Tonight's dinner:
Chicken caeser salad.
Pre made salad pack £3
Mini chicken fillets 2 for £5 so £2.50

Theres 2 of us in the house so £2.75 each... Not bad considering I had the same thing at a local pub/restaurant Tuesday for £8 😂

peanutbutterismydownfall · 26/04/2019 19:48

DC - jacket potatoes (50p); tin of baked beans (50p); tin of tuna (£1); mound of cheese (75p?) ... £2.37 each

DH & I - yellow sticker Charlie Bingham curry (£6.35) - £3.17 each

We've all shared a tube of Pringles too. They were half price so about £1.25 ... 30p each

smoked mackeral with cream cheese, hard boiled eggs, pasta and salad,
less than £2 per person

Ploppymoodypants · 26/04/2019 19:55

Fish pie
Fish £4.40
Butter 50p
Potatoes 50p
Cheese 50p
Vegetables £1
Baguette £1

That was for 4 people. So £2 per head. So that’s £240 a month just for main meal.
To be honest I struggle to keep food and groceries bill to under £500 a month. But that includes laundry and cleaning stuff. No alcohol

Nacreous · 26/04/2019 19:57

Salmon: £1.60 with green beans (30p) and roasted new potatoes (about 25p) plus some herbs and garlic and stuff out the cupboard. So probably just over £2. But breakfasts are much cheaper and tbh that was a fairly expensive per person dinner really.

Cwtches123 · 26/04/2019 20:01

Homemade pizza. I make the dough and the tomato sauce myself. Most expensive ingredient is cheese! Total cost for 4 adult servings is no more than £4.00.

Lumene · 26/04/2019 20:02

Really interesting to read the different menus and prices.

Not sure why I never managed to calculate the impact of average price per head before. Am now feeling very keen to find cheap but healthy and tasty options to include to bring the monthly average down.

We had a hello fresh dinner, chicken I'm targaron sauce, French beans and roasted new potatoes. Half price so about £2 each. Delish.

Smarshian · 26/04/2019 20:06

Lamb curry, left over lamb from roast dinner. Cost £11 for joint, but that fed 6 on the day and then the leftover lamb has made enough portions for 6. So maybe £4 worth of lamb, chickpeas 50p, courgettes 70p, tinned toms 40p, chillies 60p, 1/2 pot curry paste £1. Plus rice 60p (microwave).
Total cost £7.20 for curry, but 6 portions so £1.20 per portion, plus rice 30p per person. Total £1.50 each.

Wallabyone · 26/04/2019 20:09

We had a more expensive than usual dinner this evening, as it's Friday, and we often get a takeaway. H went to M&S and got us ribeye steaks, which were £10 each, and the kids shared one. We had asparagus and broccoli and permafrost chips from there too. Plus coleslaw. We do spend quite a bit on food, but not this extravagant every night.

MummytoCSJH · 26/04/2019 20:09

I've started counting too. These are all great ideas! Tonight is a takeaway, it was £16 for 3 of us, the first one we've had for 2 months. We used to have a takeaway at least once a week, say £15, sometimes we would have 2 or 3 a week or they would cost more of that, but at the very least that works out at over £700 per year! Hence cutting down (and putting extra in house savings).

CherryPavlova · 26/04/2019 20:11

Having driven all day across France, it’s the marina restaurant - Entrecôte bien cuit then cheese with a local wine. Two of us so will be around 80€ by the time we’ve finished.

Ylvamoon · 26/04/2019 20:14

Veg Chilli & Rice = 6 servings (2DC, 2Adults & 2 Work Lunches) £2.70 makes 45p / serving.

1x bag of frozen veg 70p
1x Tin kidney beans 50p
1x Tin butter beans 50p
1x pack passata 60p
electric, herbs & spices 40p (?)
Rice £1 (as I use whole grain fair trade & organic stuff)

Disfordarkchocolate · 26/04/2019 20:17

Double chocolate muffin, cost about £2 because I made the first batch wrong 😞

Blush can't do the maths! Should be £3.70.= 62p / serving Blush

Downthecanal · 26/04/2019 20:20

Chinese take away £35

Sorry no help!

Elllicam · 26/04/2019 20:26

Broccoli cheese quinoa bake
Broccoli - £1
Cheese £2
Quinoa £1.50
Flour and butter - maybe 20p
Breadcrumbs- 10p
So about £4.80 but it fed 5 so just under £1 a head. It was godawful though so the kids then had cheese and apples and cucumber which adds to the cost a bit. I had a medium Easter egg.

BroomstickOfLove · 26/04/2019 20:27

Fried eggs, French bread, salad. Around 70p per person.

Littlebird88 · 26/04/2019 20:30

salmon £8 ( for 5) baked with a lemon 45p
sugar snap peas mini corn (£2.50)
carrots 45p. tomatoes £2
total for 5 arpund £14

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/04/2019 20:31

Asda instant noodles, 25p.

It's not usually like this but it's been a really bad week.

SellFridges · 26/04/2019 20:31

This is interesting, because we spend a lot on food. Today we had fajitas:

Wraps - £1
Quorn pieces - £1.50
Cheese - 75p
Sour Cream - 75p
Tin Toms - 30p
Spices - 30p
Salad leaves - £1

So for four of us it was £5.60 so £1.40 each.

MrsJonesAndMe · 26/04/2019 20:33

Chinese take out at nearly £40 with enough for left overs for tomorrow later

bluechameleon · 26/04/2019 20:33

Fajita kit £2, chicken £4, 2 peppers 40p, brown onion 10p, half a courgette 20p, avocado £1, half a red onion 10p, cherry tomatoes 25p, sweetcorn 15p, sour cream 70p, cheese 50p, cucumber 10p. £9.50 for 4 of us so £2.37 each. I think that is probably towards the higher end of what I spend per meal, especially as it didn't generate any leftovers.
