Are Lewis and Peter Capaldi related? And also, what's with all the Italian surnames in Scotland?

Two completely trivial questions. I just saw the video for Lewis Capaldi's song and Peter Capaldi is in it, so I wondered if they were family and that's why.

Also there are a lot of famous Scots with Italian surnames but completely Scottish backgrounds (as far as I can tell). Was there a huge influx a few generations back or just a few Italian families that were very artsy and so Italian surnames are disproportionally represented among famous Scots. I can think of a load off the top of my head, Nardini, Conti (x2), Iannucci, Nutini, and I'm not even that good with names or knowing about famous people.

Tom Conti is another Scot with Italian heritage?

Double0FeckingBollocks · 27/04/2019 08:51

Lots of fabulous Italian names in Northern Ireland too: Morelli, Fusco, Scapaticci etc

MorrisZapp · 27/04/2019 09:19

I have a great auntie Zeta, can confirm no Italian heritage whatsoever.

MorrisZapp · 27/04/2019 09:21

Who could forget 'greasy' Risi in Edinburgh :) Guy at school said his sister worked there and the guy spat in the chip fat to check the temperature.

MockerstheFeManist · 27/04/2019 09:24

Spiteri is not Italian. It is Maltese and Greek.

Re, Anglo-Italians, Lucrezia Millerini, Mmmmmmmmmm!

I remember Lena Zavaroni, Piggy and was in her family cafe in Bute a couple of years ago. Very sad story Sad

DH is of Italian descent. His grandmother was sent over on a boat on her own aged only thirteen, just before WWI, to work in a family friend's cafe business in order to send money back to the family, who lived near Lucca.

She was very beautiful and they were worried about all the men hanging round her so married her off asap to an older Italian guy. She then had six kids as well as working in the cafe but he was cruel to her (and used to carry a gun apparently) so she had to escape. Like something out of a book or a film!

And yes they suffered prejudice, especially when Italy fought on the other side in WW2. The boys were interned and the girls got a lot of abuse at school, even from the teachers Sad

Very interesting period in our history and I'm so glad I had the chance to meet "Nana" and hear her story. Imagine leaving Tuscany for SW Scotland a hundred years ago ..

Yes to the pp who said lots of Italians to Peterborough my grandparents did.
Along with my great aunts and uncles my grandad cane first with his brother and found work and somewhere to live then the wives and children came.
They are from a tiny villisge in Puglia, quite a few of the village came.

One of my friends is Glasgow Italian. I remember when I went to Glasgow Univ. meeting all the students who had gone to Notre Dame and St Aloyisius. They seemed so glamorous to me

The Irish Traditional Italian Chippers Association gives a very handy list on their website

ksake · 27/04/2019 09:55

I’m from Aberdeenshire , lots and lots of Italian descent (coastal town) - lots of Italian fish and chip shops around (Zanres - Blue Peter cane to visit about twenty five years ago as they were said to be best in UK I think) plus Rizza’s ice cream from Huntly ... family are RC as well and I’m sure priests were largely Italian at one point ... the bishop that taught my mum catechism is Italian or at least has an Italian surname (conti) .

Mum also remembers there being a lot of Italians in Thurso where she was brought up - again owning sweet shops or chip shops (Cardozi’s?)

Svalberg · 27/04/2019 10:01

@JazzersMaw Yes, sorry, autocorrect did for me & I was too careless to check. My family lost friends on it too.

FreezerBird · 27/04/2019 10:02

A friend of mine is a Swansea Cascarini. His family run one of the ice-cream parlours but I can't remember which one - might be Joe's.

MorrisZapp · 27/04/2019 10:04

I remember Lena Zavaroni, what's the family story?

MorrisZapp · 27/04/2019 10:06

My mate married a Scottish Italian lad from Falkirk and became Mrs Campopiano, aka canny play piano :)

Eve · 27/04/2019 10:11

@FrancisCrawford. Good point about the prejudice, quite a few of the 1st generation in DHs family (aged about 60 now) use angalisied names, like Paul instead of Paulo due to prejudice experienced Although 2nd and 3rd generation ( including my teenagers are very aware and proud of their heritage.

Was going to say that there were a lot of Italian pow’s stationed in ne uk..there was a big camp near Pickering and as the Italians were a friendly bunch they were allowed to work on the farms.
The building is now called Eden camp and is an excellent museum to give people a chance to look at what life was like throughout the war
We had a similar scenario further up the coast where I live and we had a lot of Italian owned businesses , ice cream parlours, cafes etc

Dowser · 27/04/2019 10:19

Freezerbird...my relative married into the sidoli family.

Yes, I remember Lena zavaroni
Beautiful young person and a very sad story

Dowser · 27/04/2019 10:28

My cardiff cousin’s husband’s family is from Bardi .
When we eat at local pizza parlours...they all have a good matter in their own language

highlandcoo · 27/04/2019 10:28

Morris Lena Zavaroni was a child star and her appeal was based on being a sweet little girl basically. As she was growing up there was pressure on her to stay tiny and cute (she said herself) and fit into little-girl type costumes Sad and she developed anorexia followed by a struggle with depression for the rest of her life, until she died at 35. Really sad and you'd hope it wouldn't happen now.

tothesea · 27/04/2019 10:29

In the west coast of Scotland village were I grew up the local chip shop and ice cream parlour was just called the ‘Tallies’ I didn’t question it until I was an adult and realised it was short for Italian!

Dowser · 27/04/2019 10:31

Also if you’ve ever been to the barony castle hotel near Peebles there’s a monument to the polish airforce who were billeted there during the war.
After hitler invaded Poland a lot of there pilots joined the raf and were our allies.
I have a lot of respect for all nationalities but particularly the poles and do not understand the underlying hatred there appears to be for them
Wrong.
