Has anyone tried this, I hear it's quite interesting

Daughter did the 23&me one and found some interesting things - she has a double dose of a gene that confers immunity to HIV, but she also has double the chance of developing Alzheimers (from 25% to 50%, so we're not talking tiny numbers here). As far as racial background is concerned she was hoping for something interesting and exotic but is just about as boringly white British as it's possible to get.

Different companies offer different sorts of results. Ancestry's supposed to be best for finding relatives but 23&me's good for health implications.

23&me threw up one relative - my ex, DD's father. Good to know it's accurate, I suppose.

ceeveebee · 26/04/2019 19:21

My mum did it and she has managed to track down her biological father who lived overseas and came over here during Ww2, her mum had never told her any details of him so she had lived her whole life not knowing anything about him. Unfortunately he is dead now so she didn’t get to meet him but she has now met lots of his relatives and found out a lot about him!

ItsHardToExplain · 26/04/2019 19:22

We want to do it but is it worth me and my son doing it? Won’t all my DNA be in him? Confused

No. His DNA will be half from you and half from his father. If you want to do your own it will be half from each of your parents. It isn't always the same mix either so if your sibling did it they wouldn't necessarily have the same matches as you.

I've done mine to back up my online Family Trees, and got my DM to do hers too so I could see which side each match came from. It still takes a lot of work as most of my matches are 3rd-4th cousins, which means we share grandparents 4-5 generations back. Of course they don't have the same surname and it's difficult to piece it together, but I have found matches both of us share.

I did mine through FTDNA and DM's through Ancestry. Uploaded both to a programme that looks at genetic health issues. DM's is green for everything; mine is red for just about everything. I seem to have inherited dodgy genes from my DF and his DM Sad

ItsHardToExplain · 26/04/2019 21:07

Oooohhh sounds so interesting. We will definitely do it

littlebillie · 26/04/2019 22:02

This is fascinating I'm really tempted

I have done the Ancestry DNA test. The results were a bit different to what I expected regarding my ethnicity. I never knew I am 3% Jewish for instance. They are updating the results on 31st May.

SamanthaJayne4 · 26/04/2019 23:20

I have also found the Jewish connection using Ancestry so it isn't just a guess on their part. Also found DH is descended from aristocracy, on an illegitimate line!

SpaceCadet4000 · 27/04/2019 01:10

Yes, it was simultaneously pretty interesting and exactly what I expected. My ancestors came from England, Ireland and Scotland and that's pretty much what showed.

I was quite impressed that their model targetted the exact region of the UK most of my ancestry comes from. I also have a small amount of Norwegian DNA which was cool.

bruffin · 27/04/2019 01:29

My DM was Welsh and my DF Greek Cypriot.
Dna came back
37.5% greek
37% north and west european
15% Iberian
7% middle eastern
3% Italian
0.8% Nigerian
0% english
The Iberian is most likely the Welsh bit as there was Spanish and Portuguese settlements in Wales

LashesZ · 27/04/2019 01:57

I used a different company but results were interesting. Apparently I have 88% "tribal dna" from Chihuahua, Mexico. DM was practically rolling around laughing as I'm about as exotic as a potato.

bruffin · 27/04/2019 02:02

Mine was from My Haritage DNA

ThatLibraryMiss · 28/04/2019 10:34

If anyone wants to know more about genetics and what they tell us about where we came from and what happened along the way, I thoroughly recommend Adam Rutherford's A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived. It's available as Kindle, dead tree and audiobook, the latter read (very well) by the author. There's an excerpt here to give you a taste of his writing style.

Prequelle · 28/04/2019 10:37

I had the 23andme one with health testing and I'm glad I had it. I'm not a carrier for any of the things they test for which I was super relieved about, they did pick up that somewhere in my family is haemachromatosis which is correct as my grandma had it. Its also updated regularly, when they're able to test for new things your profile is updated with new results

TroysMammy · 28/04/2019 10:43

I haven't done it and no one I know hasn't done it either but I find it fascinating that some cold criminal cases have been solved by relatives of the criminal having their dna on this type of database.

Prequelle · 28/04/2019 11:13

^with that in mind when you sign up there a million check boxes about what you will allow done with your data, its very thorough and easy to opt out of things

TheInebriati · 28/04/2019 11:15

Do any of them tell you what percentage Neanderthal you are? I have a lot of characteristics.

Prequelle · 28/04/2019 11:17

Yes, this is part of mine and there's more details available

Ancestry DNA test
TheInebriati · 28/04/2019 11:23

Prequelle Thank you that looks interesting.

Nanamilly · 28/04/2019 11:25

I did it and I’m arriving in the Uk in a few weeks to meet a (half) sister I was matched with. 🤗

sluj · 28/04/2019 11:32

I'm thinking of getting my dad one for his 80th birthday. The problem is that he is not online at all, so would there be any value in it for him?
I am on Ancestry but I want this to be for him, not me.
Do the results come back in a written form?
Thank you

ithinkmycatistryingtokillme · 28/04/2019 11:34

Thinking about doing this as df was a war baby and doesn't know anything about his dfs side, he has v southern italian/greek looks so it would be interesting to find out

TheInebriati · 28/04/2019 11:35

Nanamilly Thats amazing!

BoundByBriars · 28/04/2019 11:38

My 23&me results will apparently be ready in early May.

I think I only got the ancestry bit though and now I’m wishing I got the health screen too.

sluj · 28/04/2019 11:41

Theres an interesting free app called "We're related" for anyone with an Ancestry tree. It tells you what common ancestors you have with famous people. Largely American so you get lots of American presidents but I also got George RR Martin which is way more interesting!
