Has anyone tried this, I hear it's quite interesting

Thats amazing!

It sure is. 😂. I’m very happy and not just because I now know I didn’t imagine a whispered conversation as a child.

My sister is a child from my dad during the years he was married to my mum. Mums dead but she’d be happy for us. My estranged father is in denial but as I said to him - there’s no arguing with science.

lostinthecity1 · 28/04/2019 11:47

Approximately how much do these tests cost?
I've never thought of doing it before, but from all your accounts it does actually sound quite interesting.

Prequelle · 28/04/2019 11:56

Mine was 149, there's offers usually on before Christmas

I tell a lie, it was supposed to be 149 but I got it for cheaper because of a deal

bruffin · 28/04/2019 12:29

I uploaded my results onto GEDmatch. They do an eye colour analysis based on your DNA. I have dark brown eyes but their results were grey /blue with brown flecks and a darker rim, which is what my DD has!

Prequelle · 28/04/2019 12:33

I've been thinking about exporting my results and importing to another database because I know different places offer different things don't they.

The 23andme was so accurate for me. Hair colour, eye colour, detached earlobes, toe length, motion sickness... Some interesting things

LarkDescending · 28/04/2019 12:57

Ethnicity estimates are the least scientific aspect of the retail DNA industry, and are used essentially as a marketing tool to sell these kits. The reported results on this aspect will often vary dramatically between companies, and should be taken with a pinch of salt. Lots of discussion of this on family history sites, e.g. this Rootschat thread

gingertesco · 28/04/2019 15:11

Does this DNA connect you to other relations who have also had it done online like a family tree?

Prequelle · 28/04/2019 15:12

Yes ginger, mine gives me a percentage of how connected we are and what we are likely to be to each other. I only have 3rd cousins so far

RomanyQueen1 · 28/04/2019 15:17

Do be careful if you are taking this test, it can be very emotional especially if family members have skeletons in their closet.
just be aware there may be surprises.
If you don't believe me look at my username Grin It's how I found out.

Prequelle · 28/04/2019 15:24

I had the bloody opposite, I was always told I had Romany great grandparents and it's where people always assumed I got my looks from.

Well I'm 87.1% irish/British, 3.8% German, 1.8% Scandinavian and 7.2% 'broadly northwestern European' Grin

ShannonRockallMalin · 28/04/2019 15:26

I've done mine with Ancestry DNA. The results came back broadly as I expected, around 80% from the various UK countries, with rest from Central Europe, which fits as I had 3 British and 1 northern Italian grandparent.

My paternal grandfather was one of 14 children so I've had thousands of potential cousins come up, and have been in touch with a couple of them. It's a fascinating rabbit hole to go down, I could spend days just looking at all the different connections.

RomanyQueen1 · 28/04/2019 15:28

That could well be Romany unless you can tie in the Scandinavian, Nw European and Irish to those you know already.
There are lots of these smaller percents in Romany ancestry.

Prequelle · 28/04/2019 15:29

Irish I can but not the others. I'll have to do some more reading into it as I've clearly misunderstood if that's the case! Thanks Romany

Drum2018 · 28/04/2019 15:30

This is the reason I did it - I was sure there would be a skeleton Grin but as yet nobody exciting has shown up.

RomanyQueen1 · 28/04/2019 15:32

No problem Prequelle

Missed the German too. Romany came from India through Europe where they settled for a few hundred years. Some stayed in European Countries, others were forced to flee and came To UK.
Your results show a good chance of Romany ancestry.

Anyone wanting a test, Ancestry £59 hurry, offer ends today.

BrotherlyLove · 28/04/2019 15:33

Recently started a thread about this as I Have just discovered that my brother and I do not have the same dad.
Only problem is neither my dad or brother know.
Frankly I'd leave well alone, ignorance is bliss and all that.

RomanyQueen1 · 28/04/2019 16:39

BrotherlyLove

I started one in adoption too, I think it could be very hurtful for some and opening a whole can of worms.
I don't think people should stop doing it but I think caution and a good support network is essential in case the worst should happen.

So sorry for you, my love. It must be so difficult, are you going to keep quiet, or not decided yet? No idea what I'd do tbh. Thanks

BoundByBriars · 28/04/2019 18:12

Does anyone know if the 23&me results link you to other family members?

LarkDescending · 28/04/2019 18:16

@BoundByBriars

Yes, if they are in their database (in other words also customers of 23andMe).

longwayoff · 28/04/2019 18:24

Genetic immunity to hiv? Really? Doesn't that mean a vaccine can be developed? Genuine question if anyone can answer.

HalfSiblingsMadeContact · 28/04/2019 18:43

I also know from experience that these tests and databases throw up things a long way from the people taking them.

In our case, one long-estranged relative had done the test. Luckily I knew my dad had been an anonymous sperm donor in the early days of infertility research, or it would have been VERY strange to find out I have at least 3 half-siblings. My parents had only agreed to being involved on assurances of the strictest no-records anonymity.

bruffin · 28/04/2019 18:44

Longwayoo,
Paul Michael Glazer (starsky from starsky and hutch) wife and daughter both died from aids back in the 80s . His wife contracted it from a blood transfusion at the birth then past on to her dd breastfeeding. PMG never contracted HIV or aids as it has since transpired he has that genetic factor. Their son(born after) has also inherited the same genetic resistance and is now adult had is hiv+ but with mild symptoms. They have set up a paediacric aids foundation

LarkDescending · 28/04/2019 19:13

@longwayoff - yes, the innate resistance to HIV identified in some exposed individuals is being explored as a template for vaccine development.

ThatLibraryMiss · 28/04/2019 19:20

Genetic immunity to hiv? Really?

Yes, it's thought to a hangover of a gene that confers immunity to something that's been around much longer, maybe plague. A double dose is pretty rare. She's going to see if anyone's interested in using her in medical research, but the Masters is taking priority right now.
