One of these annoying 'GP or A&E' threads

NC for this although I don't know why because all my MN friends know who I am anyway.

Basically I had minor surgery last week - surgical management of miscarriage (I would have been 9+4 at the time although the baby died at 8 weeks).

On Wednesday I started getting these sharp chest pains when I took a breath. I had to carry the dog in from the garden and couldn't get a breath for a good 3 minutes or so.

Then yesterday all was fine so I wrote it off as one of those things.

Today the pains are back. Sharp pains when I breathe in and they move about - sometimes in the centre of my chest, sometimes to the left near the bottom
Of my ribs and round my back. It is a bit sore when I bend over too. But sometimes no pain at all. No shortness of breath today, no coughing, no leg pain. I'm fit as a fiddle otherwise.

So what to do? Wait and see the GP tomorrow? Ring OOH (who will surely send me to A&E when they hear 'chest pain'?) I don't want to waste A&E resources for a pulled muscle or something - the ED in the local hospital is stretched at the minute and sending out appeals not to attend if you're not really really ill.

I think A&E would want to see you to rule out PE.

Mamimawr · 25/04/2019 20:22

I think you need to phone OOH and they can advise you. You have chest pains and are recovering after surgery, this is not the time to worry about the NHS being overstretched.

TerribleTwosPhase · 25/04/2019 20:23

I think you should ring OOH, if you haven't done anything that would make you think it was muscle pain I think it's worth being on the safe side. Hope everything is ok Flowers

I would say a and e to rule out pe/blood clot too.

JeanMichelBisquiat · 25/04/2019 20:24

It sounds a bit too pulmonary embolism ish for my liking. I'd ring 111, but really post surgical chest pain and shortness of breath is an alarm bell situation. I had a colleague years ago who had this after routine surgery.

Give them a shout straight away, OP - don't wait overnight.

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 25/04/2019 20:29

Go to A&E, they would rather rule out pulmonary embolism than take the risk.
Anyone is at risk post op.

bloodyskybroadband · 25/04/2019 20:31

Thanks all - I've given OOH a call and waiting for them to call me back. Could be a long night ahead! I really do feel like a complete time waster Confused

AngelOfDeathNix · 25/04/2019 20:47

A&E, your symptoms are very much that of a pulmonary embolism, please don't worry about wasting resources or their time.

Prequelle · 25/04/2019 20:50

I'm a surgical/gynae nurse, with you only having had surgery last week I would be going to a&e if I was you as PE is a worry.

MrsFrankCastle · 25/04/2019 20:53

As an A&E nurse, I can assure you that you wouldn't be considered to be wasting time or resources. It does sound like you could have a PE

FaithInfinity · 25/04/2019 20:55

Definitely A&E. If you don’t hear back from OOH soon, just go. Can you get a lift?

Elpheba · 25/04/2019 21:07

Another vote for A&E with risk of PE. Hope OOH gets back to you soon and sorry for your loss Flowers

Se7ven11 · 25/04/2019 21:21

a and e, sounds very much like a pe... as other posters have indicated

good luck op

bloodyskybroadband · 25/04/2019 21:27

Thanks all, the OOH doctor has called me in for 10.20, the nurse says to check my vitals? 🤷🏻‍♀️

OP posts:
CrashOverride · 25/04/2019 21:28

Good luck - if this was me I would go to A and E xx

Prequelle · 25/04/2019 21:29

I'm not sure why they're bothering with a GP to be honest. Your vital signs aren't going to be indicative of a PE. I hardly ever say this but OP if I were you I would cut out the middle man and go straight to a&e. The least you need is a d-dimer blood test which the OOH won't do

CrashOverride · 25/04/2019 21:29

X post. Tonight ??

bloodyskybroadband · 25/04/2019 21:32

Yes tonight. I'll wait and see what the doctor says then consider my next move Confused

OP posts:
Prequelle · 25/04/2019 21:35

If you get worse, cough, or have any breathlessness etc please go xx

bloodyskybroadband · 25/04/2019 21:38

Will do @Prequelle thank you x

OP posts:
Propertywoes · 25/04/2019 21:38

I would be looking to get up to A and e. if it was just a pulled muscle then I wouldn't have thought it would move around your chest.

HalyardHitch · 25/04/2019 21:40

Keep us updated op

BlondeBumshelll · 25/04/2019 21:44

I felt like a right idiot ringing OOH when I had some chest pain coming and going and thought it was trapped wind but nothing was shifting it. They were lovely and said they'd rather get some tests done at A&E just to be on the safe side even though I looked and seemed just fine. Turned out to be a pulmonary embolism and none of the drs could believe how well I seemed.

Glad you're getting seen to, it's just not worth taking the wait and see approach with something like this.

FaithInfinity · 25/04/2019 22:29

Prequelle I think it depends on the OOH. Ours is within the hospital and I’ve been admitted straight from there when necessary. Good luck.

settmenu · 25/04/2019 23:23

Hope you're ok Op.
