McDonald's straws

I see there is a petition to get rid of the new paper straws at McDonald's. I love their milkshakes, but trying to drink one through paper straws was extremely unpleasant. It wasn't even slightly refreshing, seemed to affect how cold the drink tasted. I haven't tried any other soft drinks through them, but apparently they disintegrate. I'm all for saving the planet but surely there's a better solution? I've a feeling it will affect McDonald's sales in the long run (and possibly my waistline).

(Yes, I'm a terrible mother for ever letting my children eat McDonald's and yes, even worse for eating it myself.)

You are 100% right. The new straws are practically useless. And quite revolting when they go soggy which is practically straight away. Ten out of ten for environmental effort, minus several million for practically.

FiremanKing · 24/04/2019 23:21

I had an Oasis drink from there and tried to take two sucks from the paper straw and my teeth were completely on edge. Such a horrible feeling on my teeth!

I have stainless steel straws at home and might start keeping one in the car.

PaquitaVariation · 24/04/2019 23:23

I don’t drink the milkshakes but certainly haven’t noticed that they disintegrate in the other drinks. They just feel different.

KnifeAngel · 24/04/2019 23:25

They are useless. I have bought some metal ones to leave in my bag.

Titsywoo · 24/04/2019 23:25

Maybe they should get rid of the plastic lids and we should just drink them like we would from a glass. Double win!

NeverTalksToStrangers · 24/04/2019 23:26

Dh brought McDonald's home about 2 weeks ago and my heart sank when I clocked the paper straws so I went straight to the cupboard for plastic ones, which again isn't good. I'm sure the shops might stop selling them too? If they haven't already? Where did you get the steel ones? Anything has to be better than drinking through a toilet roll. Even the sensation on my lips was ugh.

I'm all for paper straws but I'm confused why McDonald's has gone with such utterly shit ones

NameChangeSameRage · 24/04/2019 23:27

Horrible. Set my teeth on edge. I just drink from the cup now.

Prequelle · 24/04/2019 23:27

titsywoo end up with them spilling all over cars

DrBuckles · 24/04/2019 23:27

Yes I felt so conflicted as I know plastic straws are bad but the paper straw just felt so horrible- I’ve had other paper straws in other places that weren’t like that but my milkshake was hard work with it Sad

DobbysLeftSock · 24/04/2019 23:27

Hate them. Impossible to drink a McDonald's milkshake through.

AND THE LIDS ARE STILL PLASTIC!

KnifeAngel · 24/04/2019 23:28

I got mine on eBay. They weren't very expensive.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 24/04/2019 23:28

titsy I would have no issue with this for fizzy drinks (but can't stand them from dispensers, has to be a can), but you can't drink milkshake like that... not a nice milkshake anyway.

Sparklingbrook · 24/04/2019 23:28

Yes, it all seems pointless when the lids are plastic.

DrBuckles · 24/04/2019 23:29

I have reusable silicone ones that feel ok (I find the metal ones clang against my teeth). They are quite wide too so good milkshake diameter. I got them on eBay.

Kismett · 24/04/2019 23:30

I haven’t had any problems with them at all. I find them sturdier than other paper straws I’ve used in the past, and I was quite happy to see them make the switch.

I use these reusable silicone smoothie straws at home. Got them off Amazon and I could cut them to the length that I want. Not everyone needs a straw but I try to use them to protect my teeth.

FiremanKing · 24/04/2019 23:31

I haven’t seen the silicone ones.

Off to look on eBay...

Thank you DrBuckles

dreichuplands · 24/04/2019 23:31

We have silicone and metal straws we take out with us. More and more places don't have straws and it is a good thing really.

NicksWife08 · 24/04/2019 23:32

We have a milkshake place near us that sell milkshakes with paper straws, they are much better than the McDonald's ones so it's not like good paper straws done exist. I'm guessing that McDonald's went for the cheapest they could get.

I'm going to be buying some silicone reuseable straws for the future.

Etino · 24/04/2019 23:34

Poor planet.
Suck it up, people.
Literally.

Titsywoo · 24/04/2019 23:34

Yeah I guess. It's a good point though. Why not remove the plastic lids unless they are asked for (or at drive through)?

Prequelle · 24/04/2019 23:35

I'm like a child. I want a lid and straw. It doesn't taste as good drank from the cup Blush

DontMakeMeShushYou · 24/04/2019 23:37

@NeverTalksToStrangers

I think our stainless steel straws came from Amazon, but you can also get them from Ebay and stores like Lakeland. Anything But Plastic also sell them as well as glass straws

I agree. Went the other day and it was rubbish to drink a milkshake through.
