McDonald's straws

I see there is a petition to get rid of the new paper straws at McDonald's. I love their milkshakes, but trying to drink one through paper straws was extremely unpleasant. It wasn't even slightly refreshing, seemed to affect how cold the drink tasted. I haven't tried any other soft drinks through them, but apparently they disintegrate. I'm all for saving the planet but surely there's a better solution? I've a feeling it will affect McDonald's sales in the long run (and possibly my waistline).

(Yes, I'm a terrible mother for ever letting my children eat McDonald's and yes, even worse for eating it myself.)

The catering company at my work has just started providing 'biodegrade' plastic straws. Not sure if that's bullshit or not yet. Came from a main supplier though.

catinboots99 · 25/04/2019 04:11

biodegradable

canihaveacoffeeplease · 25/04/2019 04:18

Our business sells milkshakes and our takeaway ones use cornstarch straws, they look and feel/behave like plastic but are 100% biodegradable. So whilst not as nice to look at as plastic, far more user friendly whilst still being environmentally friendly.

TwittleBee · 25/04/2019 04:19

I actually haven't had any issue with either a fizzy drink or milkshake with these new paper straws. I obviously didn't put the straw in until I was about to drink though so it didn't sit there getting soggy?

Personal metal straws are way to go I think for those who don't like the paper straws though. Cheap off Amazon.

pattyhoo · 25/04/2019 04:29

I always drink from the cup, no need to use any straw! Seems like such a useless waste of resources.

Bloomburger · 25/04/2019 04:31

Bring back the straws and get rid of the bloody plastic happy meal toys. Why is one giving them untold grief about the amount of those given out every day?

FiremanKing · 25/04/2019 04:33

pattyhoo

Many people like myself want to protect their teeth, that’s why we use straws. I have very sensitive teeth and it can be painful to drink a cold drink without a straw.

Alicewond · 25/04/2019 04:38

I don’t want to use plastic, but I agree these straws aren’t nice. They feel weird and give a funny taste. Would happily except an alternative plastic option than this

Shouldbedoing · 25/04/2019 04:42

Aldi have metal straws this week

Alicewond · 25/04/2019 04:46

Have you ever experienced cleaning a reusable straw only to suck up something unexpected from the sink? Or do you wash your straws individually?

Shouldbedoing · 25/04/2019 05:00

Those Aldi straws came with a little brush

Alicewond · 25/04/2019 05:01

@Shouldbedoing I shop in Aldi every few days, tell me more

Shouldbedoing · 25/04/2019 05:05

It was a pack of about 4 straws and a long thin bottle brush about £3.69. I bought stetchy silicon covers for plates/bowls there

Alicewond · 25/04/2019 05:08

I’ve never seen them in my local store, and I browse the crap a lot!

YesItsMeIDontCare · 25/04/2019 05:11

Has anyone tried bamboo straws? Are they any good? Or are they crap for the environment too?

Zoflorabore · 25/04/2019 05:13

I got the Joie silicone straws with cleaning brush from Iceland ( the shop not the country! ) and they're excellent.
6 in a pack and all different colours so we all chose one each ( family of 4 ) and the other 2 are spares.

Cost around £3 and only bought them last week.

GabsAlot · 25/04/2019 21:22

theyre awful maybe they just want us all to buy our own perosnal straws

FiremanKing · 25/04/2019 21:25

There’s a job opportunity for someone to stand outside with a tray selling reusable straws!

JellyBabied · 25/04/2019 21:29

I struggle to drink through their straws(To be fair I've only tried them four times). I have no problems with the paper straws that Ikea sells though.

FuzzyShadowChatter · 25/04/2019 21:31

McD has the money that they could redo their cups so straws aren't needed and/or encourage reusable cups. It's a cheap publicity stunt and making naff paper straws isn't going to help anything when the rest of it is the same.

BarbaraofSevillle · 25/04/2019 21:35

They could help by not automatically giving you a straw and a lid if you are eating inside the restaurant. I always remove the lid and give it back with the straw and drink out of the cup normally, which I prefer anyway, but I expect that they just put it in the bin anyway, thus defeating the object.

It's like when you are offered bags in shops, they try to force bags on you and you have to keep saying no thank you I don't need a bag where have you been for the last 5/10 years FFS.

I bought these ones too

leatherflamingle · 25/04/2019 21:43

Remember in the mid 80s when mcds was quite new , and they had paper straws though? And they were never soggy ...
i remember them clearly, they had diagonal stripes and were really tough?

Hwory · 25/04/2019 21:50

The problem isn’t that they’re using paper straws is that they’ve chosen shite useless paper straws.
