Has anyone experienced this? Sudden stomach pain in early pregnancy

I’m currently 6 weeks and 3 days pregnant and a couple of days before I found out I was pregnant I experienced the following: a sharp pain in the centre of my stomach, I came over really hot and was then sick. I didn’t feel sick but knew I was going to be sick. The pain was severe and was difficult to sit / walk comfortably but only lasted for about an hour and hasn’t returned since (now 5 days ago).

I’ve been googling and scaring myself - but would like to know if anyone has experienced anything similar? Thanks :)

Forgot to add I haven’t contacted the GP / midwife yet as I’ve only just found out over the Bank Holiday. I’m not sure if it warrants a call to 111 or out of hours, I don’t want to panic but not sure if it’s panic worthy!

I have experienced similar at around 3wks pg - ignored the 1st day but it came back more severely the next day and I ended up in hospital. I don't think it is a good idea to ignore severe pain in pregnancy and they would never think you were wasting their time, if you sought under these circumstances.

You should contact an early pregnancy unit if you are anxious, as they might give you a scan.

forevercurious · 21/04/2019 19:03

Thanks for replying - I just feel a bit silly because it happened a few days ago and at the time put it down to what I’d just eaten (happened whilst out

for a meal) and it hasn’t happened since. If I’d have known I was pregnant at the time I’d have gone straight away but now it’s been days - I’m clearly conflicted about how I’m feeling!

Actually, it's better than waiting till 12 weeks, just to rule out certain issues or make sure baby is in the right place.

forevercurious · 21/04/2019 19:06

Thanks googling early pregnancy units now :) typical for this to all happen over a bank holiday

I think you're quite right to see if you can get checked out, but also just wanted to add that you shouldn't panic. You can get all sorts of weird pains during pregnancy. In the first few weeks your uterus is growing rapidly and that can give you cramp-like twinges. So don't panic, but do get checked out.

forevercurious · 21/04/2019 19:38

Thanks @BlueBrush - it wasn’t cramps more of a severe intense pain - but it stopped quickly! Anyway I’ve called 111 and they are going to get someone to call me back within 12 hours. I hope it’s just my anxiety that’s making me worry this much.

You will need to have an ectopic pregnancy ruled out if you have sharp and intense pain in early pregnancy

BlueBrush · 23/04/2019 08:25

Hi @forevercurious. Hope you're ok?

forevercurious · 23/04/2019 18:17

@BlueBrush hi :) yes I’m okay. I spoke to a couple of people using the 111 service the other evening and once I’d fully described the pain / what happened they didn’t seem concerned and one lady seemed quite surprised I mention ‘ectopic’ she told me to back away from google lol.

I’ve just been and filled in a form at my GP to get registered so should hear from the midwife in a couple of days - I’ll go through it with her then and ask about an early scan but I’m not half as worried as I was. Sometimes my anxiety just takes over!

Thanks for asking though :)

How are you OP? Midwives rarely refer you to an early scan, you are normally expected to wait till 12 weeks. You only get one on NHS if you insist at an early pregancy unit. I had got one due to anxiety (I had a missed miscarriage in a previous pregnancy and was worried it could happen again). My scan was fine and I could relax and enjoy the pregnancy.

forevercurious · 27/04/2019 08:16

Hi @justtickingboxes - everything still seems to be fine, my first appointment with the midwife is 2 and a half weeks away as they couldn’t fit me in any earlier disappointingly. Will see what the midwife has to say :)

Can you just turn up at an early pregnancy unit if needed? I thought you’d have to be referred

Where was the pain though I had quite a severe pain just behind my belly button. Midwives wasnt concerned properly trapped wind it didn't last long.

BlueBrush · 27/04/2019 08:53

Glad things are looking ok, OP. Hope all goes well for you, and congratulations!

forevercurious · 27/04/2019 08:58

@notsothinlizzy - yes the pain was very central around my tummy button. Never had trapped wind before so it could be that? I was sick and the pain started to fade so maybe more a digestion issue? Either way it hasn’t returned and if it did I’d see someone straight away.

I was led to believe by the person from 111 the pain would return if it was an ectopic pregnancy.

Thanks @BlueBrush :)

If yr worried dont leave it. Ring EPU who will advise

NotSoThinLizzy · 27/04/2019 11:28

Usually with an ectopic it's on one side down low and dosent disappear just gets worse. Could be something you ate but yeah I wouldn't worry to much. Just had my 12 week scan calls good 😊 might be a uti?

outsho · 27/04/2019 11:47

It could have been trapped wind but I would get checked over. I had two missed miscarriages a couple of years back and with the first one, I had crippling pain in my stomach region that only lasted a few minutes and I guessed it was some sort of stomach bug at the time. Transpired to be around the time I had lost the baby. I had no further cramps after this or bleeding at all. Found out about the MMC at the 12 week scan.

Not trying to scare you whatsoever, it may be something and nothing but I would always get checked over.

BessMarvin · 27/04/2019 11:48

It depends on the EPU. My nearest does walk ins (it's at my nearest hospital) but you won't necessarily get a scan the same day.

forevercurious · 27/04/2019 12:09

@outsho when I had the pain I didn’t even realise I was pregnant and found out a couple of days later - would the pregnancy tests still have came up as positive? (Took 6 over a period of 3 days) Did you continue to have pregnancy symptoms? I feel so clueless about all of this!

OP posts:
forevercurious · 27/04/2019 14:29

So after reading @outsho’s post I’ve booked a private early scan for tomorrow. All of the early pregnancy units around here (3) require a referral from the GP and then a 48 hour wait usually so I’ve bitten the bullet and shall be seen tomorrow afternoon.

I’m stressed and anxious! Really hoping for good news

BessMarvin · 27/04/2019 22:17

That's annoying about the EPUs. Good luck for tomorrow.

It doesn't sound the same as yours but when I was around 9 weeks I was in bed and got horrible stomach pains. Felt like mild contractions. Lasted for half an hour or so. So obviously convinced that something had gone horribly wrong. But I had a scan a few days later and it was fine. (And also fine at the dating scan.) So I'll never know what it was.
