Bloody embarrassed... how do you all pronounce 'thus' ?

I'm totally embarrassed just because this happened in front of my partners dad.

I am currently writing up a college assignment and used the word 'thus' in a sentence. Now, not using this word a lot I asked my partner who was standing with his dad if this sentence made sense.
When I pronounced thus all I got was 'it's thus! Thus!' from both of them. Obviously writing it down you don't know how it's said.

I pronounce it 'th-us' like 'fuss' but using 'th' they said it is 'the-us' obviously said as one word and not with a hyphen in.

I know I'm 100% wrong but has anyone else pronounced it my way making my embarrassment less?

But it’s not a breathy “th” like in tooTH it’s the “th” from THey

Indeed, is this how you are pronouncing it OP?

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 21/04/2019 12:31

I pronounce it thus like fuss or pus

I'm Scottish though so I'm not sure if that would change the result as I seem to pronounce a lot of words differently from my English counterparts. Although Iv just asked English Dp and he says that he says it the same way you and I say it!

I personally haven't heard it pronounced any other way.

Imo we are right they are wrong!

PCohle · 21/04/2019 12:31

I think there is a difference in pronunciation - it's how much stress you put on the first syllable. However, they were rude to make such an issue of it.

There's no shame in not knowing how a pronounce a word. It generally means you learnt it by reading it rather than hearing it - and what's wrong with that?

Seeline · 21/04/2019 12:32

How were they saying it?

It's just 'us' with a 'th' infront. I can't think of another way unless they use more if a zz sound. - which is obviously wrong!

KinkyFink · 21/04/2019 12:32

I think everyone is confused because they didn't get that you were saying it with a soft 'th' as in 'think'. They were correcting you because it should have a hard 'th' as in 'the'. So they were rude but also correct.

SoyDora · 21/04/2019 12:32

Do you mean you were pronouncing it with a ‘hard’ th, rather than a ‘soft’ one (like in ‘the’)

HairycakeLinehan · 21/04/2019 12:32

Huh?

needanappp · 21/04/2019 12:32

Ah now I've seen @Scabetty post it makes more sense as to the disagreement. The th is a hard sound as PP pointed out.

It's a th as in the not as in through

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 21/04/2019 12:33

I agree it has a hard th though.

PCohle · 21/04/2019 12:33

Yes KinkyFink has explained it well I think.

Thus has the same "th" sound as the, not think.

DearPrudence · 21/04/2019 12:34

I think the OP is about the 'th' part of the word rather than the rhyme.

Tentativesteps133 · 21/04/2019 12:34

But it’s not a breathy “th” like in tooTH it’s the “th” from THey

This is the best description

NoBaggyPants · 21/04/2019 12:34

I pronounce it 'th-us' like 'fuss'

I think OP means she is saying "fuss", pronouncing "th" as "fu".

She's actually saying "fuss", not "luss".

KinkyFink · 21/04/2019 12:35

My friend said the other day: "I'm going on a murder mystery and my 'Elias' is a tech entrepreneur". He meant 'alias' but pronounced it with the emphasis on 'li'.

I also knew someone who used to say 'You're putting the em-PHA-sis in the wrong place' . Used to make me chuckle at the irony.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 21/04/2019 12:36

You’re not wrong and it’s a bit worrying that these 2 men making you feel an idiot has worked!!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 21/04/2019 12:37

@kinkyfink it’s a joke in our family to say ‘you’re putting the em-FAH-sis on the wrong syll-AH-ble’ 😄

NoBaggyPants · 21/04/2019 12:37

Do you have a speech impediment OP, are you tongue tied? What you describe is common where someone has difficulty producing or hearing the "th" sound, "fings" rather than "things" and so on.

JellyTots2009 · 21/04/2019 12:37

Never did it think the majority would agree with me!
To make it a little clearer , I was pronouncing it with the 'th' you would say 'think' with.
They pronounced it as 'th' you would say 'the' with.
They did give me praise after we got over the whole thing and said my sentence was great haha.
I wouldn't have been bothered if it was just partner here. His dad being here made it embarrassing for me.

OP posts:
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 21/04/2019 12:38

You’ve truncated the OP’s quote, nobaggypants. She said she pronounced it like fuss but with a ‘th’ so she’s not pronouncing it as fuss.

Not sure if she’s using a hard or soft ‘th’ though.

KinkyFink · 21/04/2019 12:38

OP's pronunciation was wrong though. No reason for them to be rude but they probably had just never heard anyone say it that way before.

WhatNowRandy · 21/04/2019 12:39

It obviously rhymes with fuss, but the "th" shouldn't sound the same as the "f", if that's what you mean? I'm confused how anyone would say it "the-uss"!

KinkyFink · 21/04/2019 12:40

Bendy I love your username!

JellyTots2009 · 21/04/2019 12:40

I'm also one of these people that make sure if a word starts with 'th' I never use 'f'.
I hear it a lot around my area , think it's regional but I always make an effort to say the correct pronunciation.

OP posts:
TheBitterBoy · 21/04/2019 12:40

Ah, then they are right. Th like in the, us to rhyme with fuss

Holidayshopping · 21/04/2019 12:41

OP was wrong.
They were still rude.
