Easter egg hunt - how early is too early?

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 21/04/2019 06:51

.....assuming you want to maintain cordial relationships with neighbours obviously! Grin

DC were up at 5.30am, staring out of the window forlornly at inaccessible chocolate. I am dithering over the 'right' time to take pity on them. Is 8.30 acceptable? 9am? They will not be stealthy egg hunters (unfortunately). They are 7 and 8yo, for reference.

Thanks all!

10am on a Sunday.

Cookit · 21/04/2019 06:57

Oh gosh, my nearly 3 year old wanted to go out at 6.30 and I thought that was fine!

Insomniac79 · 21/04/2019 06:57

I'm going to let mine out at 7. My neighbours are nice and the kids will be quiet.

The Easter bunny left eggs in the house here, so we were up at 6am looking for them Grin

HelenaJustina · 21/04/2019 06:58

I’d say 9am if they won’t be stealthy!

Could you put Hop on or another film? Or get them to make some Easter cards?

I do sympathise with them, my DC went to the Easter Vigil Mass last night and we got home at 11.30pm. I very meanly didn’t let them have any chocolate at that time of night!

Happy Easter!

facedowninthedirt · 21/04/2019 06:59

I let one roll just under the sofa this morning - DC’s were beside themselves when they saw it. Haven’t actually put any eggs outside yet so they’re going to be waiting an hour or so!

AuntieMaggie · 21/04/2019 07:01

10am?! I'm all for keeping the noise down on a Sunday but not keeping the kids out of the garden til that late!

Been up since 5:30am here too... Will be letting DC out in about half hour or so - not really bothered about disturbing the neighbours since they were disturbing us til the early hours.

OP 8:30/9:00 sounds fine to me.

GrassIsntGreener · 21/04/2019 07:01

Oh no! We didn't do it because of the melting risk, now I'm nervous how we'll get away with hiding them later!

KneelJustKneel · 21/04/2019 07:04

We do an indoor trail with clues.... so er.... finished by 7am!

DinosApple · 21/04/2019 07:16

Mine are still asleep Grin, but we'll do an egg hunt when DH is back from work, around 9am.

There's lots of families round here so chances are everyone is up already.

BiscuitDrama · 21/04/2019 07:18

People put them in the garden overnight? That’s really lovely, don’t you worry about foxes eating it all?

LittleSwede · 21/04/2019 07:19

DH is currently out in the garden preparing the hunt so will let DD out as soon as it's ready. Managed to keep her upstairs in our bed with kids TV so far this morning! She's been up since 6 am 😊

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 21/04/2019 07:20

Ooh, varied responses! They have been placated with video game time for now so that should stall them until 8.30, and they haven't been fed yet so that takes us to, ooh, 8.45 at least! I will encourage them to not shout on threat of egg confiscation Grin

We'd have done an indoor one but a) the garden is massive and MADE for this and b) they'd have absolutely sacked the interior in the frenzied quest for sugar!

Happy Easter to all :) Smile

I wish Mr Fox luck with the foil-wrapped eggs! The plastic ones he may have more luck with Confused never considered that!!

DH goes out first in the morning to 'check the lawn for cat poo' while I try and keep the kids away from the windows.

Nobody's awake yet though.

Disappearedtothe80s · 21/04/2019 07:49

Night before?! We always did ours at about 11am. Obviously give them one small egg when they got up.

Either me or DB (our kids and his kids did the hunt together) would take the kids for a walk or whatever, and the other would stay behind and bury.

All grown up now, I miss watching them trying to find the eggs Grin

NorthernRunner · 21/04/2019 07:51

My dd is 4 and I’ve never done an Easter egg hunt with her 🤦🏻‍♀️ She is one egg that I will let her have some of after lunch.
I’m such a mean mom

PurplePiePete · 21/04/2019 07:55

Ours go out the night before and last year one had been nibbled by birds but otherwise seem to survive intact (depends where you hide them- it gets easier as they get older as you can be more creative). And 7am! (Neighbours have dogs so presumably have to get up and let them out to pee?)

Whisky2014 · 21/04/2019 07:58

What is a plastic egg? I keep seeing this but never heard of it.

Thirtyrock39 · 21/04/2019 07:59

Surely an egg hunt in the garden is really quick ? We did ours at 730 when the kids woke up and they were noisy but it was all done in five minutes! There's a lot of barking dogs nearby who wake me up most mornings so I'm sure the neighbours won't mind

Cookit · 21/04/2019 08:03

Oh I didn’t put them out overnight, I quickly ran outside at about 6am. Took 5 mins.

I don’t see the big deal at all. It’s not like you’ve got loud children playing and screaming for hours and it’s not like starting half a day’s worth of DIY at 7am. It’s literally 5/10 mins of running around looking and then back indoors to eat them and be quiet.

ExpletiveDelighted · 21/04/2019 08:07

We haven't put ours out yet, we do it mid morning, plastic eggs, we take it in turns to hide and find them on and off all day. We've had foil wrapped ones eaten by pigeons before.

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 21/04/2019 08:14

We've got a prior engagement to head off for at 10am so I wanted to get the hunt out of the way early :) we put them out last night because they'd be watching like hawks in the morning (living room overlooks garden and we have no curtains)!

A plastic egg is one of those refillable ones that they sell in supermarkets! You open it and fill with whatever you prefer.

5.30 my nearly 10 year old was up. 5.30!!! Then he woke my 3 year old and it was all over.

BillywigSting · 21/04/2019 08:39

I set one up in the house last night.

Ds did this at quarter to six this morning.

Easiest way to keep everyone happy I find

(except me, because I was awake and having to be enthusiastic pre 6am)
