Are bamboo socks worth the money?

Gazelda · 20/04/2019 17:41

They are reported to be very soft, anti bac qualities and a sustainable material.
But the only places I've seen them bring sold (apart from Amazon) are little gift shops that charge £8+ per pair. Is that reasonable? Do they wash well and last well?
Any recommendations?

I buy the Green Treat ones from TK Maxx. They are by far my favourite socks. Really soft and comfortable. They don't last well but I can get them fairly cheaply so I don't mind.

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 20/04/2019 18:58

I have some from Traidcraft. They're soft, comfy and show no signs of wear and tear after 2 years now.

TheFaerieQueene · 20/04/2019 19:03

Bam, who I haven’t ever bought from, somehow got my details and have sent me on two separate occasions, a free pair of socks (thanks Bam). They are very nice and soft. They wash fairly well too.

I guess they are sustainable as bamboo is quick growing, but to get fibres from bamboo is not so easy, and has many of the downsides that viscose production has, see this: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bamboo_textile
So if you want to be ecologically minded be careful what you buy. I cannot comment on how good the socks are as I’ve never tried them, but they are certainly not all “green”.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 20/04/2019 19:07

Lovely socks. But they cost loads and don’t last. I’ve had the sea salt ones and the joules ones, all go to holes very quickly and are a pain to dry.

Neolara · 20/04/2019 19:07

I also got sent lovely free socks from Bam and ended up buying lots from them. They are super soft.

Vegisgrowingwell · 20/04/2019 19:09

I love them! I ask for them for birthdays and Christmas as a treat Grin

IncognitaIgnorama · 20/04/2019 19:11

Traidcraft does lovely ones, as PP said, and they last for years.

ThatLibraryMiss · 20/04/2019 19:31

The industry that manufactures the fibres from the raw bamboo is terribly polluting and a lot of it is in China, not known for its strict environmental protection legislation.

Bamboo socks are soft because bamboo fabric is a rayon. Rayons are soft and very drapey but they wear badly, especially if they're wet (so they get damaged in the wash). If they last well it's because they've got a proportion of nylon to reinforce them. Sadly, the anti bacterial properties of the bamboo plant don't carry over to the finished product.

I like M&S men's cotton soft socks like these. They're thin, comfortable, absorbent, come in nice colours (sometimes) and wash very well.

I would have thought there was more of a threat from pandas than the Sick Goblin.

Anyway, I'm currently under-socked and thinking of giving them a try after reading this thread.

bilbodog · 20/04/2019 20:05

Wearethought.com - amazing socks. Never wear boring or uncomfortable socks again!

Beamur · 20/04/2019 20:05

I had no idea about their manufacturing so might think again about buying more.
But I picked up an absolute bargain in Boots of all places a couple of years ago and ended up with 6 pairs very cheaply. They have been my absolute favourite ever since but are wearing thin. Have been washed and worn continuously.

MadAboutWands · 20/04/2019 20:05

I have bamboo socks from SeaSalt.
Yes they are soft but the big reason I keep buying them is because how robust they are.
They usually last a year or more before starting to have holes through. Shape hasn’t changed at all despite regular washing.

To the PP who said they wouod get damaged on the washing machine, it hasn’t been my experience at all.

Langrish · 20/04/2019 20:06

TK Max have then for about a fiver for 3 pairs. Son loves them, very soft.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 20/04/2019 20:10

I’ve got a few pairs from bam (free, arrive randomly in the post) they are okay, seem to wear through quite quickly but nice and soft and don’t feel damp

DrWhy · 20/04/2019 20:20

Bam’s random send you a pair of socks marketing worked on me - they are so soft and warm. I wore my one pair whenever they were clean and chose them to go into hospital when I was in labour. DDs arrival was rather swift and I was still wearing them. When I got changed afterwards the midwife picked up the socks and asked me if she should just bin them, she was a bit taken aback at the vehemence of my ‘no!’. I figured then I should actually buy some! Their lovely customer service people helped me work out what size the ones I’d been sent were likely to be.

Charley50 · 20/04/2019 20:24

Maybe, but bamboo tights go saggy at the knee, and the ankle - Nora Batty Blush

SlappingJoffrey · 20/04/2019 20:28

I got some from the aldi middle aisle of crap ages ago and they're still in good shape.

Celeriacacaca · 20/04/2019 21:40

Bam sent both DH and me some. They're the best socks I've owned. Their marketing worked as I bought DH a lovely shirt, more socks and boxers, all of which he loves wearing. They wash and wear really well.

MsRinky · 20/04/2019 21:47

I've had three free pairs from BAM, they are lovely, but because they are so generous I've never actually bought any.

CurlyMango · 20/04/2019 22:25

Bam socks are the gods of soft socks. Wonderful truly fab

LikeDolphinsCanSwim · 20/04/2019 22:27

I’ve found that they don’t last long. I must have particularly spiky toes.

Wandastartup · 20/04/2019 22:29

Bam sends me a free pair every few moths. I’ve never bought anything from them. My mum gets them too!

Wandastartup · 20/04/2019 22:30

Months Imean

BroomstickOfLove · 20/04/2019 22:31

Bam's free socks marketing has also worked on me. I love my free socks so much that I asked DP for a multipack for my birthday, after I noticed that I had started getting disappointed on days when I didn't have any clean Bam socks.
