board games - yawn

what's the point?
away with family (me, siblings, parents & children)
evenings - kids are too tired after a day of hiking - out come the board games.
they are never complete.
at least one (worst is my dad!) has a meltdown because the rules don't make sense.

oh and you don't kick out granddad in ludo or else

I like a family board game now and then, but my in-laws make it a chore, we can all be just chilling after a busy day, and then it's right shall we play....some obscure game no one has heard of or some convoluted card game using 4 packs. It's like we are barbarians if we don't show how intelligent and high brow we are as a family by playing these ridicules games they want to foist on us.

I do love my in-laws BTW, this is just one of their quirks.

BrillyPribble · 19/04/2019 20:42

We all love board games and family board game nights are a genuine highlight of holidays with the in-laws for us. You have to have the right game though, dobble is a brilliant one for families with small children.

it's the 'let's all do something fun together' that makes me feel like I'm 6.

my personal favourite is 'blind ludo' where you can't see the colour of your person unless you peep when you throw a 6.

I hate board games, always have. I lose interest after about 5 minutes, and there's always one person who takes it mega seriously.

greenelephantscarf · 19/04/2019 20:49

it's very difficult to find something everyone (ages 5-80) like playing.
especially if after a day's hiking everyone is tired.

dominos is usually good for young and old, we have recently been introduced to train dominoes by the in-laws which was a breath of fresh air midst their usual offerings.

You need a deck of cards. Teach the children a few staples - Monarchs, Rummy, Sevens. Actually two decks then you can get Newmarket running. Coppers for betting. Or chocolates.

DramaAlpaca · 19/04/2019 21:20

I don't enjoy board games, I find them boring so don't play them. We play cards as a family instead.

SmokeAndBone · 19/04/2019 21:21

Another vote for train dominoes here!
Not too many rules and suitable for all ages

ladygracie · 19/04/2019 21:22

I second dobble. It’s fab for all ages as there’s not really any skill involved. Ludo is awful. As is monopoly. I refuse to play both of those.

FlibbertyGiblets · 19/04/2019 21:23

Fistbumps the Alpaca.

FlibbertyGiblets · 19/04/2019 21:24

Monopoly known as the Table Turner. We don't play that anymore Shock.

FadedRed · 19/04/2019 21:24

What Flibbertygiblets said. Newmarket for pennies, brilliant simple card game for every age.

BettysLeftTentacle · 19/04/2019 21:30

We love board games but I won’t have Monopoly in the house. It’s just so depressing. With my board game mad 6 year old we play:

Dobble
UNO
Enchanted Forest
Labyrinth
Any Orchard Toys one but she’s growing out of these now.
Mancala
Dominoes
Mistigri (French Old Maid)

We find a board game fills up a boring half an hour/hour if we’re away from home.

SmellsLikeAdultSpirit · 19/04/2019 21:34

Uno and dobble
Easy to carry and learn, not too long, both fun
Or grab the pigs. All kids love that one

WhoWants2Know · 19/04/2019 22:50

Camel Up was a brilliant Mumsnet recommendation. And our most recent obsession is Exploding Kittens.

ladymariner · 19/04/2019 23:51

Me, dh, ds and ds' gf have spent a couple of hours tonight drinking gin (well, that might just have been me Blush) and playing Frustration and we had such a laugh.

Um.... neither of those is a board game

Biiiiig Dobble fan here. AND fits into the smallest of handbags.

ElektraUnchained · 20/04/2019 08:42

Board games are great! I only play them with adults or older teens though.

GreenEggsHamandChips · 20/04/2019 08:45

You're playing the wrong games.

dementedma · 20/04/2019 08:48

Find them really tedious, especially if socialising as a group of adults. Somebody suggests a game that sone of the group wont have played before so first have to explain rules, then set up the stuff, everyone has to shift and reorganise themselves round the table and then the mood is gone. We just have a couple 9f pub quiz books lying around and do that. Much easier.

ThanksDriver · 20/04/2019 08:48

@FlibertyGiblets is Newmarket the one where you bet in 3 pots and there’s the turnover card etc?

If so I’ve never heard anyone else other than us who played that! Such fond memories of having to borrow 3p of my grandfathers pile of pennies as I had had such a bad run of luck I didn’t have any left to bet with Grin
