Good pasta sauce in a jar?

Time40 · 19/04/2019 12:40

I loved Seeds of Change tomato and basil pasta sauce when it first came out, and I've used it for years. A few years ago it changed - still nice, but no longer extremely nice. Recently, it changed again. Now it's too sweet, too thin and runny, and it tastes processed. I need to find a new tomato sauce in a jar. (I'd be interested in good recipes, but to be honest, I'm not really going to get around to making my own all that often, as I detest cookery.)

I love the Lloyd Grossman sauces. You can often get them on special offer for £1 each.

Justajot · 19/04/2019 12:48

I like the Loyd Grossman ones - particularly the tomato and basil one. I tend to mix it with a tin of tomatoes and then cook it for a while, rather than having it as it comes.

The Lloyd Grossman ones are quite nice, the Aldi ones (I think there are two, one is called something like tomato & mascarpone), & the Zest brand to tomato & oregano. All others I've had, have been horrible, IMO. Mind you, I've not tried the LG ones in a couple of years, so they may have changed the recipe or available range.

The Jamie Oliver ones are surprisingly good and no added sugar is a bonus.

This - www.thekitchn.com/marcella-hazans-amazing-4ingre-144538 is the best tomato sauce ever and so so easy.

Wildrose19 · 19/04/2019 12:51

I was going to say Lloyd Grossman as well. I like the curries too.

30not13 · 19/04/2019 12:52

Aldi one with basil in seriously one of the nicest and I say that as a non jar sauce user, had it at a friend's house and was v surprised at the taste

notharryssally · 19/04/2019 12:52

Sacla olive stir through

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/04/2019 12:52

We changed from Lloyd Grossman to Seeds of Change and are now looking for another as we too had noticed it had changed. Maybe we'll try the JO one!

GenericHamster · 19/04/2019 12:53

There's a low sugar version of the Loyd grossman basil and tomato and I stock up on it whenever there's a £1 offer on.

MistyMinge · 19/04/2019 12:53

I've had a couple of the Lidl Deluxe (black label) pasta sauces recently and they've been very nice. They have a few different flavours. The siciliana version has been popular with my two young children.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/04/2019 12:53

Oh Sacla. How could I forget that?

Some of those are really nice.

Time40 · 19/04/2019 12:58

Oh wow - lots of ideas already.

Thank you!

I really like the JO one too. As a low-carber I don't like the amount of sugar in others, but this one seems about right, but I can only get it in Waitrose.

SirNilsOlav · 19/04/2019 15:11

The Barilla ones are our favourites, especially the vegetable one.

IncrediblySadToo · 19/04/2019 15:14

I haven’t tried the JO ones - but I will after this.

I like the LG ones because they don’t have that weird taste/texture the others do (to me). We like the tomato & chili.

BlueMerchant · 19/04/2019 15:17

M&S Tomato and Mascarpone is lovely. Their tomato and basil is nice too.
I also like Lloyd Grossman's.

mcjx · 19/04/2019 15:18

Aldi tomato and grilled pepper stir in sauce! They're bloody lovely

RuffleCrow · 19/04/2019 15:19

Loyd Grossman' definitely. They taste like actual food.

user1471457757 · 19/04/2019 16:14

Aldi Specially Selected tomato and grilled pepper is delicious.

Time40 · 19/04/2019 16:21

Thank you! I can see that I'm going to be eating pasta sauce for weeks and weeks, just to try out all these suggestions.

Barilla Olive

Isthisafreename · 19/04/2019 16:23

Seeing as you also asked for a recipe, I'll give you mine. There's so little effort involved, it doesn't really count as cooking Wink

Chop an onion and a clove of garlic (you can use frozen chopped onion and a tube of garlic paste if you want). Gently fry in some olive oil. Then add some tomato puree, a tin of chopped tomatoes and some red wine. Bring to the boil and then simmer for about 15-20 minutes.

You can add olives if you like towards the end or chilli flakes with the tomato puree.

DramaAlpaca · 19/04/2019 16:24

Another vote for the Loyd Grossman ones.

As an aside, I'm jealous of how cheap they are in the UK. Even when they are on offer here in Ireland they are expensive.

AwdBovril · 19/04/2019 16:26

User147145 - I think that was the other one I was thinking of. I'm sure it was, we've had it before, very nice for a jar sauce.

BertrandRussell · 19/04/2019 16:27

Is it really annoying of me to suggest making a batch, tasting as you go until it’s exactly as you like it then freezing portions in freezer bags? I promise it will take you less than 30 minutes.
