I cant see another post about this. 29 year old Lyra McKee shot dead when dissident republicans fire at police during riots. 21 years since the Good Friday agreement. Im frightened for our wee country and my children's futures.

Another family devastated .

So sad to hear this news. Our politicians should hang their heads in shame. The vacuum caused by lack of the Stormont Assembly has allowed the dissidents to flourish. Our Wee Country is falling back to the bad times but apparently lives lost are just collateral damage in them and us politics. RIP LYRA

MockerstheFeManist · 19/04/2019 10:22

The recent admission at the Birmingham Pub Bombings inquest was that the IRA Command is alive and well.

I assume they know the names of the dissidents and where they live.

Maybe a friendly visit would be in order?

Girlofgold · 19/04/2019 10:29

So sad for the journalist and their loved ones.

Did you notice the police report immediately identified suspected group? I know it's probably obvious who it was but it contrasted with usual police reports stating investigation required before they'll commit to who did it or for why. I wonder why.

happyhillock · 19/04/2019 10:30

It's absolutely shocking, sympathy goes to the journalist's family, they say the NEW IRA are planning new attacks, one of my friend's is off to Belfast this weekend i'm now very worried, i don't think the violence will ever end in NI

YetAnotherSpartacus · 19/04/2019 10:31

I don't have a deep understanding of the politics, but I am deeply saddened by this. Awful, truly awful.

lurker101 · 19/04/2019 10:31

It’s very sad. Apparently the BBC and Reggie Yates were there filing a documentary, not sure if she was part of the crew.

Chocolatepeanuts · 19/04/2019 10:43

Girlofgold apparently the riots were in response to PSNI house searches in the area.

I came on looking for a thread about this...I'm surprised about the lack of interest.

I can't help but feel that if this had happened with terrorists of Asian heritage on the mainland there'd be a lot more interest.

Why is that?

I'm English by the way...but really surprised by the lack of attention it has here.

AgileLass · 19/04/2019 10:44

I remember hearing Eamonn McCann on the radio almost 2 years ago, talking about the dangerous drift in Derry, young people feeling completely disconnected and disenfranchised from their society, warning of danger to come.

How sad to see that he’s been proved right.

Chocolatepeanuts · 19/04/2019 10:45

Mockers Id imagine the authorities also know the names of these people and where they live.

Me too wheresmymojo

Apparently the PSNI searches were related to potential New IRA activity....trying to prevent attacks that they are anticipating.

Another poster on a different thread said 4 ATMs were stolen last night in the area - possibly to fund activity.

wheresmymojo · 19/04/2019 10:47

Some of the comments leading Brexiter MPs have made cant have helped surely. Not that it excuses violence but I hope they feel ashamed of themselves today though almost certainly they don't

BarbieJellyBabyBrain · 19/04/2019 10:48

I saw this this morning, just awful. I don't know what is going to happen.

RIP Lyra.

NaBiAgOl · 19/04/2019 10:50

Awful, I saw this this morning. She was so young.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 19/04/2019 10:50

Death of a journalist is always shocking.

New IRA stuff - terrifying.

Here we go again. And we don't even have Mo Mowlam any more.

BoglingToAswad · 19/04/2019 10:52

I'm English by the way...but really surprised by the lack of attention it has here.

Me too. I can't help but think if it had happened in England it would be all over the news and everyone would have an opinion.

Notonthestairs · 19/04/2019 10:56

It is truly shocking. A very talented and inspiring young woman. And for this to happen now - with the background of the anniversary of the GFA.

We should be outraged.

I am also perturbed why this is not gaining much more media attention. Maybe they will wake up when Nancy Pelosi visits later (today?).

ArabellaDoreenFig · 19/04/2019 11:04

RIP Lyra McKee.

I was saddened reading about this earlier, and was also wondering why the lack of discussion on this.

Wonder how far you would have to scratch under the surface of any of these ‘dissedent republican’ groups to find it’s just a cover for organised crime.

It is good to see responses from all political parties condemning the violence (and murder) and standing united though.

hopeishere · 19/04/2019 11:08

Really awful.

And all the "whataboutery" has started. The statement from the relevant group is shameful.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/04/2019 11:15

It's absolutely horrendous. The increase in obvious terrorist activity appears to be linked to the total disregard the Tories have had for Northern Ireland politics. They are total idiots.
That poor woman's family.

MadeForThis · 19/04/2019 11:17

Heartbreaking. No one wants a return to violence. Peace was a long time coming.
