What are your 7 year olds "into"?

DS has SEN but to us, he's capable of holding a normal conversation. He tells us what he'll do when he's grown up and how we'll feed his dog, ask "what's college? How many years are there in school", tell us about funny things he saw on the TV.
At school apparently the other 7 year olds talk about football and Xbox. I don't really think even if he was neurotypical DS would be into those.
Apparently he talks to the adults about our cat and not to the other children at all.
With our DD who is 4, he plays pretend things, tig, he'll play running around games at Beavers. I can believe he doesn't have actual conversations at school but I'd like to help him to talk about things the other children might be talking about.

My DS has just turned 7, interests include, minecraft, Jurassic world/dinosaurs, Lego (all types), superheroes/marvel etc, knights/castles/history, he also likes crafts, Clay and painting. Oh also hot wheels and jigsaw puzzles.

reefedsail · 17/04/2019 20:18

My DS is 8- he's in Y4 but August born so the youngest there.

He and his friends are into:
Gaming (Fortnite is popular- sorry folks)
Sports
What's been said on Youtube by DanTDM and AliA about gaming
Marvel

BlueMerchant · 17/04/2019 20:19

My dd ( just turned 8) loves to chat about pets/animals, days out and places she has been or would like to go and films she's seen (Harry Potter, E.T at the moment). A big thing among her and her classmates is slime and ways to make it!
My DS is 9 but for the last couple of years has been PlayStation mad with intermittent interest in science kits and making volcano explosions and growing mouldGrin

Yup. Minecraft, Lego, crafts, writing stories, watching bloody Teen Titans Go, playing Chase the Ace. Anything like a chocolate coin / lolly/ jelly kits (I keep John Adams in business!). Watching cooking programmes with me! No sport. Older bro does but he's not interested.

reefedsail · 17/04/2019 20:21

BTW individually my DS loves his soft toys, collection of glass paperweights, collection of funko pops, bubble blowing equipment, chemistry sets, bath toys...

Those are not the things he talks about at school though.

Kungfupanda67 · 17/04/2019 20:22

My 6 year old talks about animals. That’s basically it. Sometimes he’ll branch to dinosaurs, and occasionally power rangers (not that he watches it). His friends are similar, there’s lots of ninjas, animals, dinosaurs and some Harry Potter, as well as important talks about who’s lost the most teeth and other earth shattering things.

None of my friends children of the same sort of age have Xbox’s.

Usuallyinthemiddle · 17/04/2019 20:27

Conversation is mainly around Pokemon I'm told! Forgot that little gem!

yeahbutwhy · 17/04/2019 20:27

My DS is nearly 7, loves my little pony and hatchimals, is desperate for Barbies and loves drawing. No one in his class has any kind of gaming device yet that I’m aware of. The other boys seem to like power rangers, Pokemon and football.

HexagonalBattenburg · 17/04/2019 20:31

Mine are girls - but standing around Flossing still fills a large amount of time from all the boys and girls in their class. Pokemon... minecraft... slime... football (a bit - not massively though). Fair few have things like Nintendo Switches. Star Wars ebbs and flows in interest. Lego. Endless endless fucking slime.

drspouse · 17/04/2019 20:34

He doesn't really "get" Pokémon etc, and we've avoided things like Ninjago deliberately. I'll have to teach him Minecraft. He has a couple of games he lives on the tablet but they are pretty obscure I think (Danger Mouse, and SamSam).
If he wasn't a manic rushing around child with ADHD I think he'd get on better with the girls in his class.

He doesn't really have the attention span for Harry Potter or Star Wars, I'd love to watch them with him.

My son is six, but in a class with lots of seven years olds. At school the boys seem to constantly play Ninjago, but DS also loves robots/ Robot wars, Lego, dinosaurs, Hoteheels, bike riding and Hexbugs.

Equimum · 17/04/2019 20:39

Sorry, I meant to add, I don’t think any boys in his class have a game console (although I know one plays with his older brother) and my son hates football.

ClitPower · 17/04/2019 20:45

Minecraft, Yiutubers like Dan TDM and Guava Juice, watching people play Fortnight (because she’s not allowed!), lego lego and more lego, chats about dogs and random things like “craziest flavors of ice cream” and “Americans trying British food”, her team sport, inventing games, beyblades (whatever they are!), father ted.

Theninjawhinger · 17/04/2019 20:45

Ds and his friends are massively into gaming - they have a special realm on minecraft set up just for their class. Roblox, and videos on youtube are also. Popular.

Ds loves to talk about his beano and other books - his friends and him and quite bookish though.

Lego, his pets, hobbies and what they have been up to - adventure parks, trampoline places etc also feature.

parrotonmyshoulder · 17/04/2019 20:46

Mine is 6 but friends are 7. As far as I can tell, they all make ‘pow’ noises while pretending to shoot everything, think they are Power Rangers, and have ‘conversations’ beginning ‘What if...?’ (e.g ‘everything was made of jelly’). They also impress each other with knowledge of bugs.

Basically, not much conversation. No gaming (yet). Tig, chasing and ninja moves feature heavily.

Theninjawhinger · 17/04/2019 20:46

also! Youtubers: Ethan gamer, dude perfect and Dan tm are all regular features of supper time chat in our house.....

ValleyoftheHorses · 17/04/2019 20:47

DS nearly 7. Harry Potter and Minecraft are his big things at the moment. Star Wars, Lego, Lego Star Wars!
History especially Egyptians, Romans and Knights.

TrumpsFerret · 17/04/2019 20:50

Lego /science kits / music (quite niche!) / musical theatre / absolutely no sport

drspouse · 17/04/2019 20:51

One of his difficulties is fine motor skills and he can't really manage Lego.
Guess it'll have to be Minecraft!
Though annoying YouTube videos might be a hit.
He does quite a few of these things and enjoys them (days out, trampoline parks etc) but I'm guessing he doesn't know how to talk about them.

xyzandabc · 17/04/2019 20:54

My ds has just turned 7. He could, and sometimes does, talk all day about Minecraft and anything historic that has been covered by Horrible Histories. He is a walking encyclopedia on those.

Other things but not so much would be YouTube Dan TDM, Lego, space travel rockets planets etc, Roblox, he likes to think he knows about football but he doesn't really compared to a lot of friends.

reefedsail · 17/04/2019 20:55

If you can face it, you could watch some Stampy or DanTDM minecraft videos with him.

HexagonalBattenburg · 17/04/2019 20:57

he likes to think he knows about football

DD1 considers herself a football expert. She randomly runs around shouting "Penalty!" and "Come on you reds" without any bloody clue what she's doing. The kids at school have her convinced she's a Nottingham Forest supporter (I'm deeply ashamed at this and working on it) so she spends any time she sees anything vaguely football related on the TV shouting for Forest to come on... even if it's a completely different team and league playing altogether.

It's bloody hilarious (apart from the unfortunate Forest bit)

Stravapalava · 17/04/2019 21:01

My DD is just 8, but her interests are:

Harry Potter
Gymnastics
Swimming
Baking
Make up
Queen (the band)
Reading
Playing imaginary games of teacher - she does it for hours.

MagicKeysToAsda · 17/04/2019 21:05

Horrible Histories all the way. I wouldn't say conversation so much as a stream of "jokes" that start with kids' joke book type stuff and descend from there as they try to out-gross each other. Slime. Lego / robots / snap circuits. Top Trumps (dinosaurs, monsters etc). No gaming.
