How do you clean your shower?

I'm very nearly 40 years old and have no idea how to keep a nice clean shower.
We have a glass walk in shower, dark grey tiles, grey grout. It always looks disgusting.
Our boiler was out of action so dd popped to her friends house for a shower. I would genuinely be mortified if someone popped round and asked to use the shower!
How can I keep it looking at least presentable?
I'm generally rubbish at cleaning (extremely tidy house but if you look closely not particularly clean) so other cleaning tips gratefully received too

We have a wonderful cleaner because I hate and I am useless at cleaning. But we use Viakal to clean the shower. It’s great stuff. Not one for the environmentally friendly household though. We also use Zoflora in the bathroom.

We use method products for the kitchen.

Dusting is my least favourite thing ever so rarely gets done by me 😳

I never know how to do this properly either!

I tend to get in the shower after I’ve left the spray to work for a bit. Then I scrub the tiles and glass with one of those body puff things (not DD’s-I keep one just for this purpose!) and then wash it all off with the shower head. Then use the squeegee to get rid of the water. I use the Method Ylang ylang spray as well.

moodymary · 16/04/2019 15:47

I’ve found the only way to keep it looking clean is to use a squeegee after every shower. I use it on the glass doors and on the tiles and then dry off any drips with a towel. It sounds a faff but it takes 2 minutes and means I only have to properly clean it every couple of weeks.

I live in a hard water area and if I don’t do this it looks awful within days and takes much longer to get it clean again!

I wipe my shower enclosure and tiles down with a microfibre towel after every use. Takes a couple of minutes and means I only need to "properly" clean it with bathroom spray every couple of weeks. I clear the hair trap in the drain out every few days though otherwise that gets revolting!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 16/04/2019 15:51

We squeegee the glass door after a shower and when I clean the bathroom I spray the shower tiles with detox with bleach. It’s the only thing that keeps the orange mould at bay. Our shower is usually pretty nice.

GilmoreMe · 16/04/2019 15:52

I'm in a very hard water area. Would a water softener help? The glass always has water marks and looks awful.
I nearly always squeegy after a shower but no one else - husband and teens - does despite me nagging!

Spritz with the method shower spray after each use, get the cleaner to give it a good scrub once a week.

Therewere5inthebed · 16/04/2019 15:56

I recently discovered white vinegar, the environmentally friendly descaler.

It removes crusted on water marks and when used in conjunction with bicarbonate of soda removes any mould marks too. Once clean I then use Method Ylang Ylang shower spray and then I can leave it a good few weeks before redoing with vinegar.

I’ve tried every cleaning product going as I live in a hard water area but this works really well and is far less noxious.

Just a word of warning, din’t Use on limestone tiles.

MrsFezziwig · 16/04/2019 15:56

When I was selling my house I forced myself into the habit of squeegeeing/drying after every shower, so that it was always presentable at short notice. It takes a couple of minutes at most and means it always looks nice.

Megan2018 · 16/04/2019 15:57

I have no idea how the cleaner does it.

But I use shower spray on the screen and on the shower heads, knobs and floor inside the shower area (ours is wet room tiled floor) after every shower. Never had to use a squeegy and it dries streak free and always looks pristine.

I use a bleach spray periodically on the tile grout for any mould spots and the cleaner uses Viakal on all the shiny bits weekly so they don't get limescale on them.

I think the cleaner also goes over it all with an ecloth too.

Lexilooo · 16/04/2019 15:58

I let my husband do it

BarbieJellyBabyBrain · 16/04/2019 16:01

Urgh, my shower is the most ridiculous thing to clean. It has a fixed shower head (one of those giant round ones which is lovely but a pain in the arse!) so you can't remove the head off the wall to rinse the shower screens or anything. And it's got sliding doors, so all the crap gets stuck in the slidey bits and it's so hard to clean!

And I have just started using soap off the back of the threads on here, which is great, but OMG the soap scum, it gets everywhere!

TSSDNCOP · 16/04/2019 16:01

I have a cleaner, but she’s not the person I’d ask Hmm

Anyway, the easiest way is whilst you’re in it. Viakal the glass and Method the tiles overnight. Get in in the morning et voila!

stucknoue · 16/04/2019 16:02

A nice lady does it, and the rest of the house as I'm rubbish at cleaning

notacooldad · 16/04/2019 16:04

DP does it.
How? I haven't a clue.

80sMum · 16/04/2019 16:05

The secret is in the drying! Dry it every time you use it and it will stay looking as good as the day it was installed.

I only actually "clean" my shower (as in, use cleaning products) about 3 times a year, if that! Yet despite being 10 years old and in daily use, it still looks clean and sparkly. After every use, I use a squeegee to remove most of the water from the glass doors and a towel to finish the job. I then use a towel to dry the taps, shower head, hose, door handle, waste trap and chrome shelf (basically, all the chrome-wear). I live in a hard water area, but drying the shower as described has meant no limescale buildup and no water marks in 10 years.

Holidayshopping · 16/04/2019 16:07

@Therewere5inthebed

How do you use the white vinegar? Do you put it in a spray bottle? Diluted with water or neat?

downcasteyes · 16/04/2019 16:08

Daily.

When I'm finishing off in the shower, I spray some Method bathroom cleaner about and give it a quick once over with a sponge. I then turn off the water and squeegee it. It takes about 90 seconds in total and it always looks immaculate.

80sMum · 16/04/2019 16:09

And it's got sliding doors, so all the crap gets stuck in the slidey bits and it's so hard to clean!

Mine also has sliding doors! I push the edge of a towel between the two doors where they overlap and pull/push the towel up and down between the doors until all the water drops have been dried off. That stops the overlap from getting watermarked.

Therewere5inthebed · 16/04/2019 16:12

Holiday
I currently use Stardrops White vinegar which comes in a spray bottle but have just ordered strong white vinegar that can be diluted.

SpamChaudFroid · 16/04/2019 16:13

Liberally spray the whole area with Viakall, leave to do its magic for a bit then rinse off

Cafetierecoffee · 16/04/2019 16:14

I have a hand held Karcher steam thingy and I blast the shower with tonnes of hot steam. It’s amazing.

kittybee · 16/04/2019 16:16

I’m a cleaner and I would echo what others have said about squeegeeing after every shower. If you shower and run, the limescale/soap deposits etc build up. In my own home I squeegee every time, then every couple of days I spray with Wilkos white vinegar and wipe off with a smooth e cloth or a white duster. The tray and tiles get wiped frequently, and I’ve used all the products mentioned, but tend to use Astonish as they aren’t expensive and they work. I agree that if there’s a limescale build up, or watermarks on chrome, then Viakal is great. I think little and often works better than one big clean every week or so.

MummyMCM · 16/04/2019 16:23

The only thing that will get rid of limescale and water marks on our glass shower is viakal. Everyone I know swears by it. They have the liquid in a bottle which is stronger and can be left on areas with bad limescale or tough marks, and they also do a spray which is more for “daily use” (not that I fully clean my bathroom daily!) but it’s useful for a spritz in between the cleaner. Available in most supermarkets.

Use the viakal and do a super deep clean and then you just need to get into the habit of giving the shower/mirror/taps etc a wipe down every day once you get out the shower, that’s what I do and it keeps the place looking presentable and without water marks just in case we have unexpected visitors and also helps reduce the dire need for deep cleans constantly. Takes me a couple of mins MAX just to wipe all the surfaces down and means it always looks clean.

GilmoreMe · 16/04/2019 16:49

I've just ordered some viakal, white vinegar, microfibre cloths and a squeegee!
