This is heartbreaking. Such a beautiful building.

Sky is reporting one of the towers is on fire now.

Dowser · 15/04/2019 20:15

Was only talking about notre dame a few weeks ago to my son and dil and saying how bbeautiful it was and the energy inside was amazing
Very sad

brizzlemint · 15/04/2019 20:15

Yes, they melted Sad

Deadringer · 15/04/2019 20:16

Heartbreaking. I have seen similar comments about a 'higher power' on Facebook, ha bloody ha! 200 years it took to build that and it is being destroyed in a matter of hours. Hilarious. Sad

How upsetting.

brizzlemint · 15/04/2019 20:18

That scaffolding is looking like a skeleton Sad
I wish the BBC would stop quoting Trump, they should be quoting Macron or the Pope not somebody thousands of miles away who doesn't know what he is talking about Angry

Mapril · 15/04/2019 20:19

I can't believe how emotional I am watching it, Paris is one of my favourite places and Notre Dame was absolutely magical.

I'm so glad that there doesn't appear to be anyone hurt, but still. So sad.

Figure8 · 15/04/2019 20:21

No!!!!!

spaniorita · 15/04/2019 20:21

Oh this is just dreadful. I know it sounds trite about a building but my heart is breaking. Such a wonderful place and my DH proposed outside of that cathedral so wonderful memories too.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 15/04/2019 20:22

This genuinely broke my heart when I seen the news of the fire. I love Norte Dame I wasn’t fussed about visiting when we were in Paris but dh wanted to and I’m so glad we did. It literally took my breath away walking inside particularly with the locals school choir singing as we walked in. Such a beautiful place. Cannot believe the windows are melting they are one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.
I didn’t want to leave so we sat and had a coffee and a crepe in the cafe right next to it just looking at the details of the building.

StrangeLookingParasite · 15/04/2019 20:22

They've MELTED?

The roof (charpente) of Notre Dame, was called 'the forest' because of all the oak there. A hundred metres long and thirteen metres wide (I think, it was a quick glimpse). All that lovely, old, well-seasoned wood.

Yes, the folks criticising our pompiers can fuck off.

AventaRizon · 15/04/2019 20:22

@SneakyGremlins Stained glass windows are held together with lead strips. The lead will have melted or buckled in the heat allowing the glass to fall out.

TapasForTwo · 15/04/2019 20:23

I think it is because it seemed so permanent. It managed to get through two world wars almost unscathed, and now this. Heartbreaking.

endofthelinefinally · 15/04/2019 20:23

If you really want to appreciate the building of a cathedral, read The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

icelollycraving · 15/04/2019 20:23

I feel very upset about this. The person trying to be a smart arse earlier in the thread is an insensitive fuckwit.

Roussette · 15/04/2019 20:23

It goes from bad to worse, there might be a fire in one of the towers, not confirmed. My heart goes out to all Parisians Flowers

I went there on my honeymoon over 30 years ago and also when I was 16. So very very sad.

ChicCroissant · 15/04/2019 20:23

It is a beautiful building that we always go into when in Paris - we usually stay within walking distance.

So sad to see it burning, I'm feeling lucky to have our memories and keepsakes from there - it is a place that we love. They are evacuating the island it is on now Sad

I don't think there is going to be much of it left Sad

Pompello · 15/04/2019 20:24

The 'higher power' comments are so painfully annoying. Such a beautiful and important building gone, I can't imagine what Parisians must be feeling. And all some dicks on social media can think is 'tee hee hee, aren't I so witty and daring'.

Fuck off.

derxa · 15/04/2019 20:26

national disaster
so sad Sad

Theimpossiblegirl · 15/04/2019 20:27

Awful grammar in my previous post.
Some people have no empathy.

Gutted about this beautiful, special place.

Twizzleegg · 15/04/2019 20:27

So sad 😩 850 years of history on fire. I'm in shock.

sevenyears · 15/04/2019 20:28

Very shocking.

I have photos of me sitting outside the cathedral when I visited in my 20s.
