It's breaking on bbc news, from the pictures it's a major blaze!

@Justaboy DH was actually meant to pop the question at the Eiffel Tower, which we visited the day before Notre Dame, but I am terrified of heights and had a bit of a panic attack which apparently "ruined the mood" ConfusedGrin

Inside #NotreDame. Only a small part of the vault collapsed. Interior seems relatively untouched. Alleluia!

Notre Dame cathedral is on fire!

that's badly translated. "affluence" in French means "due to the crowds of visitors", not that they're rich.

beebreath · 16/04/2019 06:35

The catholic church already have funds to do that, it wouldn't make a dent in their wealth.

Was thinking exactly the same.

Triglesoffy · 16/04/2019 06:40

Salma Hayek’s husband says that he will donate $100m to restore Notre Dame.

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 16/04/2019 06:42

Which begs the question why is he allowed to just have that kind of money sitting around and not use it to help actual people?

Triglesoffy · 16/04/2019 06:44

Because he’s in charge of the family fortunes.

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 16/04/2019 06:45

Yeah, Jesus would have been cool with that I reckon.

Triglesoffy · 16/04/2019 06:46

And he probably wants a big gold plaque in the nave that says Restored with the kind generosity of Monsieur Pinotnoir

"Yes I'm struggling with the Far Right concerns too? Sorry to be dim but can someone clarify?"

Judging by what I've seen on Twitter this morning while looking for updates on the fire, they're already both:

  • Spreading conspiracy theories that it was started by groups of people they don't like, and preparing for any potential finding that the fire was accidental by insinuating that such a finding will itself be evidence of their theories because the globalist elite or MSM (or whatever their buzzword of the day is) always conspire to cover up crimes by immigrants; and
  • dogwhistling about it being a metaphor for the current state of France's white Christian heritage (France is on fire because it's being destroyed by immigrants, nudge nudge).

I think the latter is what the loathsome Katie Hopkins is nudging and winking about on Twitter this morning, although I can't be arsed.

Ironically, all those kneeling people singing Hail Marys people are crying at will in all likelihood be far-right Le Pen voters.

Thisweekisgoingtobecrazy · 16/04/2019 07:06

Sorry to post the above on a thread that's been such a lovely place for people to express their sadness and share memories!

brizzlemint · 16/04/2019 07:29

Hopefully not. But if they are, even Le Pen voters (who I don't agree with) are allowed to be sad at the serious damage to a world treasure.

Triglesoffy · 16/04/2019 07:44

Is Katie Hopkins still on Twitter? What a stupid woman!

MyOtherProfile · 16/04/2019 08:00

Presumably because he lives in a free cou try and not a communist state. Very generous of him to offer so much here.

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 16/04/2019 08:09

Very Christian of him, I'm sure.

MyOtherProfile · 16/04/2019 08:14

Is he particularly Christian? I don't know.

flitwit99 · 16/04/2019 08:29

I am amazed the interior looks so undamaged. I thought it would have been completely destroyed.

I hope the injured firefighter is doing ok. He or she is the only thing that is not easily replaced.

NicoAndTheNiners · 16/04/2019 08:32

Wow, never knew that Salma Hayek was married to someone so wealthy.

I've been read on another forum that really the Catholic Church has enough money in the bank to fund the rebuild and barely notice the loss. Not sure that's quite accurate but it does beg the question of how much they will contribute and how much they will expect the general public to fundraise.

Notre Dame fire fund hits 300 million euros and rising as second billionaire offers to pay 200m towards restoration

WillGymForPizza · 16/04/2019 09:07

The interior doesn't look anywhere near as badly damaged as I expected last night. Those old magnificent cathedrals were truely built to last.

Oblomov19 · 16/04/2019 09:21

"Wow, never knew that Salma Hayek was married to someone so wealthy."

Me neither. How much will it cost to repair, I wonder? Not that it will ever be quite the same, but still....

I have no idea who Salma Hayek is - off to google!

MyOtherProfile · 16/04/2019 09:22

I thought most of the Catholic church wealth is tied up in land and buildings, and art. So they would have to sell stuff off. Maybe they do have vast amounts in the bank though.
