Anyone else just decided bigger it all, I'm just going to go grey?

I'm tired of dyeing my hair and trying to find a natural looking colour that suits me.
Tired of it itching if I do it myself.
Tired of the cost in money and time doing it at the hairdressers.

So bugger it. In 45. I shall age gracefully. Or something.

I’ve embraced the grey! There’s a few of us over on the style and beauty board who are either st the beginning of the journey, so to speak, or are dye free.

This me taken just now.

I dyed mine silver. Greys and silvers are lovely!

Yep, me. My hair is naturally extremely highlighted, so I'd need an expensive salon job every time if I wanted my natural colour, which I can't afford. I've not found a box dye I like / that suits me. So, I'm done. I do look older, but I don't actually care.

AwdBovril · 15/04/2019 13:58

DoctorBoo you look fabulous!

Palominoo · 15/04/2019 13:58

I did. I have long hair with a fringe and my hair was dyed very dark brown.

As the grey grew down I couldn’t stand the difference between the roots and the dyed hair which due to not being dyed over had faded to an orangey colour that looked dreadful, so I hacked a lot off.

I looked bloody awful but hung in there as luckily my hair grows at a decent rate, slower in the winter bug during the spring and summer it grows very well.

Then when it was all natural and shoulder length I decided that the grey was a bit dark on me so I bleached to lot white/platinum blonde and it suits me a lot more.

Strangely it is much easier to maintain than the dark brown.

Nnnnnineteen · 15/04/2019 13:59

Never coloured mine so am just letting nature do it's own thing. I only started going grey a few years ago so am now still mostly dark with lots of random greys. It's looking a bit mad cat lady, but I'm powering on through.

MaMisled · 15/04/2019 14:12

I gave up dyeing mine at 46. I'm not remotely vain so wasnt too concerned but did have it cut every 8 to 10 weeks. I often get compliments about it now and would say it started softening and looking nice after about a year.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/04/2019 16:17

A year.... eek.

I've already gone light brown instead of dark brown.
And could go blonder if I don't like the white/grey. But I'm not sure how much nerve I have to grow it out and put up with the contrast.

I have naturally dark brown hair but have been having highlights to blend in the grey which works pretty well.
I get tempted to let it grow out, but most of my hair is still quite dark. I think I'd look a bit Cruella de Ville.
How would I take the plunge?

Blobby10 · 15/04/2019 16:43

Another natural dark brown here but after having a colour in my hair ten years ago and being so bloody bored while having it done, I decided that I wouldn't do it again. I only have my hair cut 2 or 3 times a year anyway. The greys (or blonde/white bits!) are increasing year by year but I just can't be bothered to do anything about it.

My grandma coloured her hair for years and when she stopped at about 55, she let the most beautiful iron grey grow out. I want that colour!! My mum was blond all her life and is now a gorgeous grey.

megletthesecond · 15/04/2019 16:47

Yes.
I've never dyed mine. I've always been very dark so I'm fascinated by the increasing grey speckles and stripes.

LowLifeOpinions · 15/04/2019 16:50

I'm 43 and just starting to really turn grey. Don't want to start colouring as cannot be doing with the constant maintenance and potential root regrowth issues. So I'll go grey naturally.

GrumpyOldMare · 15/04/2019 16:52

I stopped colouring my hair years ago. Am now more grey than my ''normal'' colour and love it.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 15/04/2019 16:53

I did. Bleached it to grow it out, to see what colour it is naturally. Early 40s and totally grey, it turns out Grin

Wore it natural for about 6 months (it's short) but felt a bit drab so bleached it silver again.

Only have to bleach it every 12 weeks as my roots are grey/silver.

megletthesecond · 15/04/2019 16:54

Also, less money spent on hair colour means more money to spend on clothes, teeth and gym. I've got good shampoo and conditioner so my hair colour can do what it wants.

UCOinanOCG · 15/04/2019 16:55

I did this. I am in my mid 50s. My natural hair colour is a lovely silver blonde now.

doctorboo · 15/04/2019 16:56

Thanks @AwdBovril It’s been nice not touching up the roots every couple of weeks. I’ve tried 3 wash colours in turquoise, pink and purple since getting rid of the light brown/dark blonde I was using, but felt a bit too self conscious - totally my own issues coming through there!
My current issue is that I keep hacking at it myself certainly no hairdresser and have messed up the back a wee bit. Reminds me of being 13ish and getting a friend to give me a chin length bob just before we went to a school disco; obviously 20+ years haven’t granted me wisdom Blush 😂

Cocolapew · 15/04/2019 17:00

I've nearly got all my dye out, I have very short hair atm though. Im white at the sides and front and grey/darker at the crown and back.
My hair was bleached very light but even it looks yellow against my natural colour.
Im going to let it grow out a bit to see what its like. Ive been natural before but stupidly bleached it again.

WhatHaveIFound · 15/04/2019 17:01

I have never dyed my hair and now in my early 50s, almost all my dark brown hair is grey. My 80+ mum on the other hand is dark blond Grin

stucknoue · 15/04/2019 17:02

I don't colour mine, still mostly fair but white "blonde" bits are creeping through

Woolly17 · 15/04/2019 17:04

I found my first greys at 18. So I am now more grey than not (am 42) unfortunately it's also rather patchy. It's bright white at the temples with a darker (but still v grey) down the middle. But at the back there are actually patches of white and patches of darker hair... It's a bit too unique a look so I high light it to even it out a bit. Though I need less and less upkeep the whiter I go.

MitziTheTabbyIsMyOverlord · 15/04/2019 17:05

Me Another non dyer here too.

TBH, I think when people do dye after a certain age (actually, often at ANY age) although the dyed colour might be gorgeous, but it tends not to go with the skin tone as well as their natural colour does. And this can be aging on their skin.

However, I DO understand why people dye, so I keep this view VERY quiet.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 15/04/2019 17:07

I'm 33 and seriously considering it. I'm going very grey and can't be bothered dying it all the time.

iamH · 15/04/2019 17:08

I'm 47 and 8 weeks into growing out my grey.
I've been colouring my hair dark brown for 30 years and I've just had enough of it.
I m using root touch up at the moment and when the line is to big I will go on to head scarves and eventually will have it cut short.
