Anyone else just decided bigger it all, I'm just going to go grey?

I'm tired of dyeing my hair and trying to find a natural looking colour that suits me.
Tired of it itching if I do it myself.
Tired of the cost in money and time doing it at the hairdressers.

So bugger it. In 45. I shall age gracefully. Or something.

I've never dyed mine because I'm far too lazy. Mid 30s has brought white and silver hair for me, but my hair is black so they don't half shine through. I'm developing a Mallen streak which I'm quite pleased with

I went grey quite young so had been colouring it from my early 30s. I'm early 50s now and stopped colouring it about four years ago. The growing out stage was pretty nasty but I like it now, it's about 80% silver and the rest dark grey and brown. It's becoming far more frequent in the last decade to see young faces with grey hair so I don't think it's as strongly associated with being very old as it used to be. The generation above me, including my mother, were a bit horrified that I'd gone grey but nobody my age had anything negative to say about it (I don't know whether they had negative thoughts but were too polite to say anything).

I’m mostly grey and very light brown speckled throughout, but have a clump of dark hair at the back. I’m seriously considering getting it dyed a really nice silver, but still trying to pluck up the courage. It looks crap growing through my brown dye and I’m thinking at least grey hair with the very few brown hair growing through the silver wouldn’t be as noticeable.

Would I need the current dye stripped out?

I'm going grey disgracefully.

Can't be arffed to do the whole dying-on-a-regular-basis thing.

I’m so jealous. I just have a big clump of brown at the back. ☹️

I've never dyed mine, just pluck out the odd grey as and when I see them. Although there aren't any clusters yet the individuals are increasing in number, I'm very dark so they are easy to spot, but curly so they don't stick out when they regrow. I really ought to just let them grow but plucking is so satisfying. Definitely not going to start dyeing now though.

I stopped dying my hair when i started going grey in my mid 40's

I have very short spiky hair so a fair few people think it's highlighted

But when it just washed and flat on my head it looks like a badgers arse

WoollyMummoth · 15/04/2019 17:20

Rapidly closing in on the big 50 and stopped dying my greys about 4 years ago when I started to react badly to the dye. It made my head feel like it was on fire, (fucking menopause.) I rather like my grey now as it framed my face and is a total contrast to the back of my head that is still dark brown

SpaSushi · 15/04/2019 17:21

Anyone with pale, freckly skin done the grey thing? My hair is naturally an ash blond-brown, the grey of my roots seems too washed out/ wrong for my skin tone. All the lovely silver white grey i see are on people with more colour in their skintone

BillywigSting · 15/04/2019 17:23

I started going grey as a teenager, dyed it for ten years and like you got thoroughly fed up of it.

I loped a chunk off and stopped dying it and actually quite like it, but I'm only 28, I might not love it so much in my 40s.

Ds likes my 'sparkly hairs' anyway

wowfudge · 15/04/2019 17:30

I grew my colour out and my natural grey looks as though it's highlighted and it's not a white as I thought now there are no roots contrasting with my old colour.

I went lighter with the base colour a couple of shades and had two colours of highlights. Then stopped having the base colour and grew out the highlights. Took a while, but my hair's short and it never looked bad. I have had so many compliments on my natural colour and I have a really good hairdresser who makes sure I don't have an old lady haircut. It's liberating: do it!

kiki22 · 15/04/2019 17:32

I'm keeping on with colouring mine until I have more grey than colour. At the moment it's still more dark brown that grey and looks odd

HelloCanYouHearMe · 15/04/2019 17:32

Yes i did... 38 years old - went for an ash blonde pixie cut then let it grow. I now have a grey chin length bob and have so many compliments.

... not to mention the £60-odd per month im now saving not having it coloured

Best thing i ever did after leaving dp

We need a *I’m a hairdresser, ask me anything’ on the Ask Me Anything section. 😁

Knickersononeshead · 15/04/2019 17:39

I'm 32 and last dyed my hair about 3 months ago. Decided I was fed up having to due it every few weeks so have left it. But at the moment it is really driving me mad! The sides are worse but can't seem to get a decent photo. This is mine currently and I'm always having to wear it up

I was about 45 when I started to go grey, I'm white now at the temples, salt and pepper at the front and dark, pretty much no grey at the back. My hair is quite long. I just can't be bothered to dye it, rarely see another mum on the school run with grey hair. Apparently as my DD says a lot of her friends thought I was her Grandma. I suppose i'm old enough as had her late. But as I tell my DD a lot of mums will have dyed hair, and I'm being authentic!

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 15/04/2019 17:41

I’m 52. I stopped tinting my hair about 9 years ago as I couldn’t keep up with it. I started going grey at 18.
It looks a lot nicer when it’s done. But I don’t need to leave the house today so this is me right now
