Cup rolled onto dog poo

I have a new reusable coffee cup. Yesterday while we were in the park I put it down on the grass. DS knocked it over on his scooter and sent it hurtling towards some dog poo. I'm pretty sure the cup rolled over the poo. I have sterilised it but can't bring myself to place it anywhere near my lips. I'm going to throw it away.

DP thinks I'm being ridiculous. I think there is a risk the poo could have transmitted bacteria that could cause serious illness. Or am I being silly?

Don't throw away. If you really cannot use it yourself (I understand) then charity shop it if your husband doesn't want it.

MyOtherProfile · 13/04/2019 09:00

YABU. You've washed it.

ElizabethMainwaring · 13/04/2019 09:00

It definitely isn't dirty anymore and certainly won't make you I'll. However, the thought would put me off too and I would not like using it either. I would bin it. It is a bit silly, but that's what Id do. I wouldn't even have bothered cleaning it.

I'd feel the same as you and bin it, even though that's irrational.

BlueSkiesLies · 13/04/2019 09:05

Wash it with boiling water and some milton and it will be fine!

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 13/04/2019 09:06

If it's been sterilised it's going to be fine.

You have certainly eaten trace quantities of poo in the past due to contamination (birds pooing on crops, trace contamination at slaughterhouses, restaurant workers not washing their hands etc) and have lived to tell the tale.

PristineCondition · 13/04/2019 09:08

The grass you put it on would have shit particles on it- as does pretty much any surface you touch.

AfterSchoolWorry · 13/04/2019 09:08

Give it to your husband, let him drink out of it. Yeah, see how he likes them apples!

I could never drink out of it again. Dog poo. DOG POO!

PristineCondition · 13/04/2019 09:09

Or indeed door handle, light switch, trolly\basket, ect

AnyFucker · 13/04/2019 09:09

Just bin it and buy another cup. It's irrational, but so what ? I would.

FamilyOfAliens · 13/04/2019 09:10

Rather ironic that you buy a reusable coffee cup then want to throw it away because of a feeling in your head.

Asta19 · 13/04/2019 09:12

Logical me says the cup is fine. But I couldn’t drink from it either. I agree, give it to your DP if he thinks you’re being ridiculous!

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2019 09:12

If you don’t like the idea of it, then yes, you’re being silly but people are allowed to be silly.

If you genuinely think that it might make you ill, then that is starting to look like health anxiety that might get out of hand, and maybe you need to address that?

Monny1 · 13/04/2019 09:27

I wouldn’t use it either!

Eastie77 · 13/04/2019 09:37

Ok. Glad I'm not alone in my illogical feelings! It's a Frank Green cup so not exactly cheap and I've only had it a week but really can't bring myself to drink from it.

Family - totally understand the irony in throwing away a reusable cup. I will drop it off at Oxfam this morning.

DP doesn't drink hot drinks at all otherwise he claims he'd use it.

To reassure a PP, I'm sure I'm not suffering from any kind of health anxiety. I know logically I won't die if I drink from this cup but..nah..dog poo. Can't do it.

Wolfiefan · 13/04/2019 09:38

I’m with you OP. It’s dog poo. It’s grim. Not logical but nah. Couldn’t use that cup again.

knobblykneesandturnedouttoes · 13/04/2019 09:40

I would throw it away. I couldn't give it to charity knowing dog poo had been on it. Irrational but true.

toucantoo · 13/04/2019 09:41

I wouldn't even think twice. It will be cleaner now than it was before it rolled into the poop as you will have touched it and set it down on all manner of surfaces. Lots of surfaces have human fecal matter on them. Seriously. It's clean now. Added to which, you don't even know categorically that it touched to poop. Tell yourself it didn't. Even if it did after washing it would be clean. Do you have DCs? Did you let them crawl? Yeah, they have already ingested more fecal matter than you would want to think about.

BlackeyedGruesome · 13/04/2019 09:53

Think about it logically. If you had dog poo on your hands you would wash them really well and then carry on with food prep and eating. Your cup is likely to be cleaner.

Saucery · 13/04/2019 09:56

I left a mug outside and when I brought it in the next morning it had a slug in it. It was a lovely mug so I bleached it several times, washed it up, put it away then used it when the memory had faded.

Farmerswifey12 · 13/04/2019 10:01

I would also get rid even though I know that's irrational. My DH is like yours and wouldn't mind

BarbaraofSevillle · 13/04/2019 10:01

Now no-ones going to buy things from charity shops in case the previous owner dropped it onto dog poo Grin.

If you have a dishwasher, put it in that, otherwise boiling water and milton or similar.

Literally everything has touched something else dirty somewhere along the way. Do you never handle money? Think about how many people have handled it and where their hands have been?

autumntimebrowns · 13/04/2019 10:13

So when you say you're 'pretty sure it rolled over the poo' that suggests to me there wasn't even a mark on the cup? So give it boil in a sauce pan with a splash of Milton. And USE it. Please.

Shopkinsdoll · 13/04/2019 10:17

I would chuck it but I have ocd over dog poo. So bad I avoid grassy areas or have tsk study the area before walking on it.

Palominoo · 13/04/2019 10:22

Weirdly I would be ok if I was in my own garden and it was one of my own dogs Poo that I had somehow missed, but some other dog’s poo would freak me out.

At home if a spider is on any soft furnishing I have to get ride of the soft furnishing because no matter if it’s washed it still feels contaminated.
