Cup rolled onto dog poo

Eastie77 · 13/04/2019 08:56

I have a new reusable coffee cup. Yesterday while we were in the park I put it down on the grass. DS knocked it over on his scooter and sent it hurtling towards some dog poo. I'm pretty sure the cup rolled over the poo. I have sterilised it but can't bring myself to place it anywhere near my lips. I'm going to throw it away.

DP thinks I'm being ridiculous. I think there is a risk the poo could have transmitted bacteria that could cause serious illness. Or am I being silly?

I’m amazed how many people are saying chuck it.
Dishwasher, done

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 13/04/2019 10:25

Should be ok if washed well.
Or, reuse as something like pen/pencil holder (if you don't chew the ends!) Grin

Eastie77 · 13/04/2019 10:26

Knobbly and Barbara - I'd assume anyone who'd buy a reusable cup from a Oxfam is someone who wouldn't be too fussed about it rolling over dog poo if that makes sense. I wouldn't buy cutlery or plates from a charity shop precisely because I'd be worried about the kind of thing.

When I met DP he lived in a house share and jointly owned a dog. One day I observed his housemate giving the dog something to eat from a plate she took from the dishwasher. I discovered they allowed the dog to eat from their plates and never ate or drank anything from that house ever again.

I know I'm being irrational since I happily eat in restaurants all the time and obviously have no idea how clear their plates and cups are!

If you can get over the hurdle of using it that first time, you should be OK. I had similar with a tea tray that I'd popped a dying pigeon on before taking to vet. I did have to steel myself to use it though.

Eastie77 · 13/04/2019 10:30

Autumn when I picked up the cup there was a brown stain on the lid. It was probably coffee but could have been poo. If you've seen a Frank Green cup before you'll know you have to put your mouth over a small hole on the lid, pressing your lips down firmly. I really cannot drink like that from the cup knowing it may have had dog shit on the lid.

I'm with you on this OP. It might be irrational but I'd be replacing it if I was you.

autumntimebrowns · 13/04/2019 10:36

I'm surprised it was difficult to spot the difference between a coffee stain and a dig poo stain. It my experience doo poo absolutely stinks!

mum11970 · 13/04/2019 10:41

Why don’t you just buy a new lid from their website?

Derpess · 13/04/2019 10:42

Just had to google frank green cups, they look lovely! Op are they safe to carry in a bag without spilling?

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2019 10:54

“I wouldn't buy cutlery or plates from a charity shop precisely because I'd be worried about the kind of thing”
Hmm- and you’re sure there isn’t an element of health anxiety going on here?

Ivegotbills · 13/04/2019 11:08

I wouldn't use cutlery or crockery from a charity shop either and I certainly don't have health anxiety. It's hardly something that impinges on my life in a massive way: I just wouldn't do it.

I'd bin the cup too OP. Perhaps irrational but again, buying a new cup is hardly a huge inconvenience for the sake of feeling at ease.

Katterinaballerina · 13/04/2019 11:12

I have a dog. I still struggle with keeping shoes after they’ve had dog shit on them. Charity shop.

Saucery · 13/04/2019 11:14

Ah, so it’s a Dog Thing then. Well, you can’t help how you feel about that I suppose, so best to throw it away if you absolutely can’t see yourself using it again.

Eastie77 · 13/04/2019 11:20

Derpess yes, absolutely safe to chuck in a bag and they will not spillSmile I bought one after I had DD as her buggy did not have a cup holder. I love them. I don't work for Frank by the way!

Bertrand How would you define someone with a health anxiety? I very rarely worry about my health and can count the number of times I've been to see my GP in the last few years on one hand. If I feel ill I tend to just wait for whatever I have to pass and don't feel anxious about it. I think the thread so far has shown most people would be adverse to re-using the cup and this doesn't scream health anxiety to me...

TSSDNCOP · 13/04/2019 11:26

I could wash that. Up a thousand tunes. It would still be the up that touched dog poo.

TSSDNCOP · 13/04/2019 11:28

Cup a thousand times

Not a speck of health anxiety here thanks

Rottencooking · 13/04/2019 11:36

Telling us about all these other places that have shit particles on them means nothing. It's the image of it. The fact you know it's there and have seen it. I don't care that money has shite particles on it, I can't see it, haven't ever seen it and am also not putting it to my mouth.

OP YANBU.

Palominoo * ....At home if a spider is on any soft furnishing I have to get ride of the soft furnishing because no matter if it’s washed it still feels contaminated.*

So if a spider is on your sofa, you would chuck the sofa? You really ought to seek therapy. That's not normal.

Rottencooking · 13/04/2019 11:39

Also not sure why anyone is mentioning health anxiety, Christ. It's more about being traumatised by the beloved cup rolling in rancid dog shit. 😂 Nobody thinks they're going to get ill after washing it obviously.

ShirleyPhallus · 13/04/2019 11:42

If you really cannot use it yourself (I understand) then charity shop

Oh Christ. Thanks for putting the image of “everything in charity shops having previously rolled in dog poo” in my mind Grin

dontgobaconmyheart · 13/04/2019 12:25

I get it to an extent OP but I think you're being silly and it's a bit wasteful. The bacteria on your mobile phone or PC keyboard contains the same/worse. Children and their hands have God knows what on them too most of the time do they not. Could you not just put it in the dishwasher or wash in something hot and antibacterial Confused

At the end of the day it's your cup- do what you want, bin it if you want, it's a pretty small issue luckily!

Derpess · 13/04/2019 12:40

@Eastie77 👍 off to order one now 😂

Eastie77 · 13/04/2019 12:49

I know there's bacteria, human waste etc on phones, currency and a whole host of other inanimate objects. But I don't put my mouth around and drink from those objects.

I've sterilised the cup. Lid is back on and it looks pristine. I can drop it off at Oxfam shortly. If it makes some of my fellow poo averse charity shop fans on the thread happier I was thinking about sticking a note on the cup explaining what happenedGrin I do believe in full disclosure when it comes to these things.

OP posts:
Eastie77 · 13/04/2019 12:51

@Derpess - before you buy a brand new one do you want to get a cheaper one second hand from Oxfam? You know the backstory now. If you live anywhere near East London let me know and I'll direct you to the right branchGrin
