My little girl came home from the in-laws yesterday, I noticed a mark on her arm but left it until this morning to text. I sent a picture and said 'I don't know what this is on names arm' mil then phoned me and said she was really sorry, but her dog had bitten dd, she said dd threw a bike at her (dd is 2, we have our own dog at home and she's never done anything like that) so the dog bit her. I was a bit shocked really that mil didn't tell me without me asking first. My other half is (rightfully) livid, we don't want to seem harsh but dd won't be going over again, even with the dog locked away I still wouldn't feel comfortable.

She's lying but it's because she's terrified her dog will be put down or you won't allow DD to visit again. Both scenarios are plausible so I get it. Horrible to lie but I see why. (Don't condone it, but get it)

Justonemorepancake I agree.

But that also means she is putting herself before her grandchild. Lying coward.

You could assume better of her and that even if she had not been caught out she has had sufficient enough shock/warning now that she intended to 100% ensure the dog and child have no contact, and was terrified to confess this lapse of judgement in case it meant her dog being put down. But yes it's an assumption and I would be wary of it happening again. I hate dogs around kids full stop. My friend just had to put her family dog down after it bit her Dd's face really badly. Mild mannered family pet that the kids had grown up with, but it had an uti that had not been noticed and so out-of-character and out of the blue bit the kid, who was next to the parent and ignoring the dog 2 foot away. No-one can ever say their child is 100% safe around a dog.
