Madly itchy scalp. HELP

Fazackerley · 08/04/2019 10:36

Omg it is driving me mad. Have tried Nizoral, selenium shampoo. I am taking HRT but have been happily for 6 months so not sure its that. I think it started after I used a particular brand of cheapish shampoo. I've even checked for nits (none!)

HALP

Do you have dandruff/flakes of skin coming off?

My scalp and hair really benefit from being thoroughly brushed twice a day and a couple of light brushes if needed during the day.

The brushing keeps my scalp free of dandruff and distributes any naturally occurring oil along the hair, which is long.

I use decent bristle hairbrushes, Mason Pearson as they don’t give you any hair breakage.

can you try an antihistamine? you allergic to something or stress maybe causing it?

MadSweeney · 08/04/2019 10:43

Drs.
DS has some weird kind of thing that I can best describe as adult cradle cap. The Nizoral etc worked for a while but then just became ineffective. Dr has now prescribed steroids.

If its started after a change in shampoo it could be allergy though. Try rinsing and rinsing thoroughly.

Finally, if your scalp is a bit dry, warm some olive oil and get a willing accomplice to massage it in to your scalp. It will feel like you're frying chips on your head but the end result is very worth it.

Try an antihistamine if you think it’s an allergic reaction but also you could try neat apple cider vinegar ( you need the one with the ‘mother’) applied to your scalp, leave it at least an hour but longer if you can. You just wash it off as normal. Good luck!

GoldenPineapples · 08/04/2019 10:48

Head and shoulders itchy scalp it very good. Always help itching on my scalp if I've been using a brand of shampoo which irritates it.

Fazackerley · 08/04/2019 10:58

Ive tried the head and shoulders.

I am taking an antihistamine twice a day, it does help a bit but makes me feel really tired!

I will try the ACV tonight!!

no dandruff flakes. Scalp a bit scabby and oily but I think that's because I've been scratching it. First of all I thought I had been bitten all over my scalp by midges as there were a lot in our horse's field!

I've had this twice in my life.

The first time it was nits. It would be worth checking again in a few days just in case. Make sure you're sitting on a white sheet and check the collar of any clothes you're wearing, in case you're dislodging them rather than removing them with the comb.

The second time it was an allergy to Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLS). Since I went SLS free I haven't had an issue.

Fazackerley · 08/04/2019 11:03

I will check again but I am 96% sure it is not nits. Also wuold the piriton help nits?

Funnily enough I have just bought some soothing sounding shampoo from the health food shop, Faith In Nature, not sure if it has SLS in I will check

Neem Rosemary shampoo (natural) you put it on wet hair and leave on for 5 mins then rinse as normal, I've tried everything else and this really works I've had it just over a week and the difference is amazing

Fazackerley · 08/04/2019 11:33

I've just checked and the shampoo I have bought doesnt have SLS in, so thats good. I will do the ACV then wash with the faith in nature shampoo and see if that helps. I see that the H&S scalp relief does have SLS in.

It's not just my scalp, its the back of my neck and basically anywhere that my hair is touching! The back of my ears are itchy AND spotty Sad

Could you be having a reaction to tree pollen? My eyes are really red and swept because of tree pollen at the moment.

DropZoneOne · 08/04/2019 19:55

Boots expert itchy scalp treatment - it's about £4, you squirt it onto your scalp after washing your hair then massage in.

I had a really itchy scalp after treating for nits, but no lice. I was pulling my hair because the strain on my head gave relief from the itch! This stuff gave relief immediately! I've been using for about a month now, and it's so much better.

QueenJulian · 08/04/2019 19:59

It sounds quite extreme if it’s everywhere your hair is touching. If the vinegar doesn’t calm it down, maybe see your GP?

Fazackerley · 08/04/2019 20:40

Vinegar hasn't worked and stung like hell. Sls free shampoo has left my hair like straw and my scalp is still itchy. I feel like rubbing hydrocortisone all over my scalp!

T-Gel shampoo by Neutrogena. The brown colour one not the clear one.

Massage in whilst in shower, leave a couple of minutes then rinse. Massage into scalp again (ignore the hair just get every bit of scalp) and leave to soak in for 5 mins then rinse.

Use each time you wash your hair (every couple of days if you can) until you finish the bottle.

If you have to use conditioner during this time use it only on the ends, don’t get any on your scalp.

Fazackerley · 08/04/2019 23:15

Well I've had a piriton and a glass of wine and it's feeling loads better. Maybe the ACV did help Shock

I have had dermatitis on my scalp since childhood. I have used Polytar, which is a coal tar shampoo. It stinks like tarmac, and I also use Alphosyl 2 in 1. I get scabby areas where I have been scratching too.

ColeHawlins · 09/04/2019 02:11

* I think it's definitely a hormonal thing OP*. I've had similar, recently.

neat apple cider vinegar ( you need the one with the ‘mother’)

Mother? What does that mean?

Bouledeneige · 09/04/2019 02:15

I've always had a naturally itchy scalp and so does my DD. We are all a little ezcema-y. But i got a sample bottle of Balneum shampoo for itchy scalps to try through here and my daughter raves about it. (I use different stuff because I have a keratin treatment at the moment).

Dottierichardson · 09/04/2019 02:48

Second the Neutrogena T-Gel, I used it when I had a weird reaction to something and my scalp was itchy and flaking, it cleared it up and was generally soothing. I don't know what caused the problem I've never had it again.

managedmis · 09/04/2019 02:59

Sure it's not shingles? I had it recently in my scalp

Fazackerley · 09/04/2019 07:32

It's back this morning. I'm going to buy a new pillow today just in case. I've just checked again for nits and nothing. Popped another piriton. It's sort of settled into the back of my neck and hairline. It's so bad! What a pathetic thing to be suffering from!
