Lyrics that make you say ‘eh?’

Lounging on my Sunday afternoon and listening to an amazon playlist.

Toni Braxton - he wasn’t man enough for me comes on.

The lyrics make no sense

What are you thinking?
Did you know about us back then?
Do you know I dumped your husband, girlfriend?
I'm not thinking 'bout him
But you married him
Do you know I made him leave?
Do you know he begged to stay with me?
He wasn't man enough for me

If she’s not thinking about him, why is she singing to his poor wife that he begged to stay when she dumped him?

Have you any songs that make you say ‘eh? You’re just talking shite now love’?

'Horse with no name' always really irritates me; viz-
'There were plants and birds and rocks...and things'. What bloody things? Words have obviously deserted the lyricist.
'After two days in the desert sun my skin began to turn red'. Two days? Most people would be like a tomato after two hours.
'Ain't no one for to give you no pain'. Aargh, the grammar hurts!

Makegoodchoices DD 11 says that making it shower takes more control.

@Oldandwornout and huggybear, The term incubator likely refers to the fact that the girl was having a premature baby so they would've prepared an incubator for said baby to go directly into. (Neonatal care wasn't too great up to the 1980's when it improves significantly. )

@Greiglaidlawsbarofsoap Yes but that then essentially says you make money and I make you come...which sounds a bit transactional Hmm

It’s so lovely when all the 7 year olds sing Little Mix....

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 07/04/2019 20:40

There's a song we sing in assembly at the school I work at which starts "People, come together, strange as neighbours, our blood is one." Which does make sense, I suppose, but surely "People, come together, strangers, neighbours" would make more sense!

YolandiFuckinVisser · 07/04/2019 20:51

"I've no time to sit comfortable down
But I still need armchairs in my home
To put carrier bags on"
The Fall, Carry Bag Man

Fucking awesome

grumpyoldblonde · 07/04/2019 20:57

Don’t call me baby, you’ve got a nerve and baby that’ll never do

Well I never, I thought it was
‘Don’t call me baby, you got another lady that’ll never do’

My own lyrics often make far more sense than the real thing 😂

flapjackfairy · 07/04/2019 20:59

Re happy and the room without a roof nonsense I think it means that it is limitless . As in a room without a roof has no ceiling to it so there is nothing to contain you and bold you back . That is my interpretation of it anyway . Probably twaddle though !

Bluelonerose · 07/04/2019 21:03

Marilyn Manson beautiful people "You live with apes man it's hard to be clean"

Tbf if you've ever seen the video to it you won't notice the lyrics Confused

CastorTroyWantsHisFaceBack · 07/04/2019 21:07

Oh @DisposableNN I always thought it was ‘you got another baby that’ll never do’ Shock

I wonder what they are all thinking when they write these songs?

Do you think it is purely just to get some rhyming. Like Eminem:

Life is no Nintendo game, but you lied again
Now you get to watch her leave,
Out the window, guess that's why they call it window pane

Hmm

I think "I bet you think this song is about you" is a fantastic line, really clever.

Cattenberg · 07/04/2019 21:19

So do I, BalloonSlayer.

James Blunt "You're Beautiful"

Fucking creepy stalker.

Who had a plan, but never does anything about it. And his life is perfect despite never having this woman....

My life is brilliant
My life is brilliant (this is going to be such a great lovesong!)
My love is pure ( wow, life is great with luv!)
I saw an angel (heavenly love story!)
Of that I'm sure (in case you were in any doubt)
She smiled at me on the subway (she totes wanted me)
She was with another man (oh....)
But I won't lose no sleep on that (she just doesn't realise I'm the one for her!)
'Cause I've got a plan (a PLAN!)
You're beautiful
You're beautiful (oh so pretty)
You're beautiful, it's true (what's the plan....?)
I saw your face in a crowded place
And I don't know what to do (it's really busy in the subway, bit it's ok, I have a plan)
'Cause I'll never be with you (oh.... No plan then...)
Yes, she caught my eye
As we walked on by (she looked at me, she may or may not have smiled)
She could see from my face that I was
Flyin' high (drugs are fun kids!)
And I don't think that I'll see her again ( possibly because she was just a stranger)
But we shared a moment that will last till the end (yeah man, this woman totally digs me, we're in love now)
You're beautiful
You're beautiful
You're beautiful, it's true (so pretty tho, did I mention that?)
I saw your face in a crowded place
And I don't know what to do
'Cause I'll never be with you
La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la, la(thatwasn't filler....)
You're beautiful
You're beautiful
You're beautiful, it's true (I'm not stalling for time...)
There must be an angel with a smile on her face (ah ha! Divine intervention!)
When she thought up that I should be with you (it's MEANT TO BE, BACK TO THE PLAN!)
But it's time to face the truth
I will never be with you... (Oh.... Disappointing)

It's shit.

The whole of One Week by Barenaked Ladies. Wtf is that all about?!

RuffleCrow · 07/04/2019 21:47

I actually think Shakira's lyrics are unexpectedly wonderful and make quite a bit of sense. They don't seem like they were written by a monkey at a typwriter

user1463178569 · 07/04/2019 21:53

Until recently, I hadn't realised there was something bit creepy about the bangles song ' Eternal Flame'

"It's meant to be, darling
I watch you when you are sleeping
You belong with me"

I sang this at a talent contest as a teenager, I clearly paid no attention to what the words meant.

mollymawk · 07/04/2019 22:01

@partidgeamongstthepigeons totally agree, no Duran Duran lyrics made any sense ever, loved them all!

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 07/04/2019 22:03

‘And we made love right there in your best friends couch’

Hope you put a towel down Rita, love. I’d be livid if I found out

mollymawk · 07/04/2019 22:05

I’ve hated the lyrics to Upside Down ever since I realised what they were. Written by men for a woman to sing. Yuck.

Instinctively you give to me
The love that I need
I cherish the moments with you
Respectfully I say to thee
I'm aware that you're cheating
But no one makes me feel like you do

I know you got charm and appeal
You always play the field
I'm crazy to think you are all mine
As long as the sun continues to shine
There's a place in my heart for you
That's the bottom line

SmilingButClueless · 07/04/2019 22:22

Be proud because your partner is cheating? Plus even the singer thought this advice was rubbish - she was married 5 times...

You'll have bad times
And he'll have good times,
Doin' things that you don't understand
But if you love him you'll forgive him,
Even though he's hard to understand
And if you love him oh be proud of him,
'Cause after all he's just a man

Persimmonn · 07/04/2019 22:23

Yes! Licky boom boom down. Eh?

Well this one I know what it means. Settle down: The song is called “Informer” by the rapper, named “Snow”. He had been charged with attempted murder in the 80’s. The song/rap was basically two fingers up at the sheriff’s and police officers who charged him because he had been snitched on by an “informer”. He is basically telling them all to “lick his bum bum”.

🤓

VanGoghsDog · 07/04/2019 22:28

@00100001

Always hated that song, now realise it's totally vacuous as well.

I like lyrics, if the lyrics don't make sense, I can't like the song.

And don't get me started on all those 60's songs about blokes perving on their mate's kids, etc - Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon, and all that shit!

OublietteBravo · 07/04/2019 22:31

This alone is love (A-ha) has lyrics that have puzzled me for years:

This alone is love
That my love brings
And all of us
Who are traveling by trap-doors
Our souls are a myriad of wars
And I'm losing every one

Traveling by trap-doors - what does that even mean? How does one travel by trap-door?

ChopinIn10Minuets · 07/04/2019 22:35

Of course English wasn't A-ha's first language. Maybe it makes more sense in Norwegian? unlikely
