Ecoegg Laundry Egg

Winner if the most boring post of the year goes to... me! Sorry

I just wondered if anyone has used an Ecoegg Laundry Egg (www.ethicalsuperstore.com/products/ecoegg/ecoegg-laundry-egg---210-washes/)?

I’ve been usung Smol washing capsules, which I liked the idea of, but every month, you’re left with a hard plastic box, and also, since we’ve been using them, my eczema, which was always pretty mild, is the worst its ever been.

Before I buy my Ecoegg I’d love to know how other people have found it.

My parents always used one, but in my experience it is basically the same thing as washing with nothing at all Confused I have never found it to clean clothes better than a full cycle with just water!

NigelYerABawbag · 06/04/2019 19:45

I use ecover or bio-d powder (depending what's on offer when I buy it) that comes in a cardboard box btw, any reason you can't use that?

blackcat86 · 06/04/2019 19:48

I use an eco egg and love it. Works fine for 2 adults and a weaning baby (so plenty of dirty washing). If something is really stained then I add a bit of vanish but I would do that anyway TBH. They're really economical and do the trick.

No reason at all Nigel. I hadn’t heard of Bio-d but i’ve been looking at Ecover online today. I’ll try those, and forget the Ecoball. Thank you 😀

I tried one but I really wasn't impressed. My clothes looked clean but they don't get particularly stained or dirty anyway, I think they would look clean with a plain water wash. I found that the "clean cotton" fragrance wore off after the first few washes and my clothes started to have a weird, musty smell that was still noticeable when they were dry.

Progress2019 · 06/04/2019 19:55

Agh Blackcat, now you’ve got me torn! It was the recommendation from Allergy UK that made me think it was the best option, my skin is so so sore. Thank you

I've been using an eco egg for several years. Works well for us, family of four, two teenage boys.

Sometimes I use an additional cap of something like dettol laundry cleanser for stinky sports kit / boys bedding.

But no complaints and can't ever imagine going back to anything else.

NickMyLipple · 06/04/2019 20:02

Shame about Smol because I love them! The plastic is recyclable, if that helps! Have you contacted them to ask about your eczema? They have very helpful customer service imo.

ParadiseLaundry · 06/04/2019 20:12

I know someone who is very proud of using one and talks about it often. But the whole family's clothes have a noticeable musty mildewy smell about them imoBlush

NotMyUsualTopBilling · 06/04/2019 20:25

We used eco egg for a few years and started to notice a musky smell on all our clothes and gave up on them, we have a big machine so used 2 eggs on their recommendation but it made no difference.

We now use Smol and much prefer them, but I sympathise with your eczema because it can be frustrating finding something that doesn't break you out. Incidentally I was told by my dermatologist to switch to bio products and it's calmed my skin.

As an aside the Smol packaging is fully recyclable, laundry powder cardboard boxes are turned away at the plant due to a wax coating to damp proof them.

Gramgram · 06/04/2019 20:34

I've used the eco laundry egg and was very disappointed. Clothes looked old and grubby and my white sheets turned grey. Also as others have said there was a peculiar smell. So I really couldn't recommend them.

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 06/04/2019 20:52

I wasn't impressed at all and didn't continue with it I'm afraid. What about searching for local refill stations for a detergent you know is gentler on your skin?

ParadiseLaundry · 07/04/2019 08:24

'Incidentally I was told by my dermatologist to switch to bio products and it's calmed my skin'

DS has eczema and I totally agree with this. His skin improved massively when I switched.

foxessocks · 07/04/2019 08:31

I use surcare which is a powder in a box and as a brand is meant for sensitive skin I believe (I found it on an ethical consumer website so it is meant to have less chemicals etc) . It doesn't really have much of a scent but I like that, clothes do smell clean though and a box has lasted ages only use a little bit.

Only problem I find with powder is it does clog up the drawer a bit.

foxessocks · 07/04/2019 08:32

Btw Bio d was another one I found but I couldn't find it in the supermarkets I use but surcare seemed more readily available.

mommymooo · 07/04/2019 09:01

I use one for lightly soiled everyday day washes. With a nice fabric softener.
For dirtier washing like my son in a muddy park my husbands really stinky football things I'll use normal washing detergent.
But I do love it and you do save money.

bellinisurge · 07/04/2019 09:03

Use one on lightly soiled clothes. Works fine. Clothes are clean and fresh coming out of machine. I use a bio detergent for heavily soiled stuff.

maybenextyear · 07/04/2019 09:08

Maybe try soapnuts- I've been using the Ecozone ones for years without problems. They are supposed to be good for eczema.

bagpiss · 07/04/2019 09:09

I've been using one for about a year now, I've had no musty smells. Our washing doesn't have any smell in particular but I like that as I don't like over fragrant washing in general. Not noticed any greying of whites, but i wash whites and towels/tea towels on a 60° - the max temp for evo egg- and anything else on an eco/quick setting.

Legofriday · 07/04/2019 09:09

Another vote for surcare. Not as good imo as persil et al but good for kids with eczema.

Is the eco egg the one which is a magnet inside a plastic ball? The magnet gradually smashed inside the ball and I didn't like the possibility of small bits of magnet on the baby's clothes, although I never saw any.

TapasForTwo · 07/04/2019 09:13

Don't waste your money. We tried one and DD's eczema got worse, and we ended up with the musty smelling clothes and stinky washing machine. They don't kill off the mould or bacteria in washing machines, and it was this that caused the smell and the eczema. I bought some Ariel bio powder to kill the smell, and a happy side effect was that DD's eczema disappeared.

It is a common myth that bio powder causes eczema. It is the perfumes, not the enzymes that does this.

ElGuardiandenoche · 07/04/2019 09:16

I gave up on ours as I found it didn’t particularly get the clothes clean and everything smelled musty.

I get Bio D or Ecover from Amazon, whichever is on offer.

bellinisurge · 07/04/2019 09:26

Weird. Our clothes don't smell musty. Maybe because I always air them even after using the dryer. I use the self cleaning cycle on my washing machine too (not especially regularly).

ParadiseLaundry · 07/04/2019 09:30

It's so refreshing to see so many people who are pro bio washing powder when it comes to eczema. Most people won't even entertain the notion and you get shot down in flames!

I'm not sure if it's because that's what is recommended by the NHS eczema clinics although in my experience they gave us a lot of false information and even went so far as to call me a liar when I pointed out that something they had recommended had made DS worse! Sorry for going off on a tangent there though!

'It is a common myth that bio powder causes eczema. It is the perfumes, not the enzymes that does this.'

Yes to this. Also in my experience you can use a lot less bio product to get the clothes clean than you need when you use non bio, meaning that of course there will be less perfume residue on the clothes altogether.

bellinisurge · 07/04/2019 09:30

Just "sniffed" some recently laundered underwear BlushGrinto double check I wasn't going mad. Nope. No musty smell. All fresh and clean
