Anybody know about jewellery hallmarks?

I need the help of the hive-mind!

I'm normally quite good at researching things but my partner has bought me a ring that has me stumped. Anybody out there know anything about hallmarks and can shed any light on what this mark is?

The ring is vintage (we think), white gold (750), diamonds and sapphires. I tried to take pictures of the mark but it was coming up blurry so I've put my best drawing skills to the task. That's it as best as I can see it - I might've gone a bit wrong, not sure.

Any help or knowledge greatly appreciated :)

You probably know this but 750 is 18ct I think..

NigelYerABawbag · 03/04/2019 22:10

I don't think that's a hallmark, at least not a UK one Confused

YourVagesty · 03/04/2019 22:11

Thanks GoGo. I know nothing about jewellery - although he did tell me that it was 18ct but nice to have it confirmed by Mumsnet ;)

I wondered if it was foreign Nigel - I looked up UK marks and it doesn't look like one of them. Unless it's v old? No idea. Blush

I think it means the diamonds are pure diamonds (that's the squiggles) and the sapphires are pure too (that's the four dots).

TheBrainandPinky · 03/04/2019 22:15

White gold isn't vintage.

Bouledeneige · 03/04/2019 22:19

It doesn't look like a UK mark or vintage. A jeweller might be able to tell you the country of origin so you could research the mark.

YourVagesty · 03/04/2019 22:19

TheBrainandPinky The seller thinks its from the 1920s or 30s. Says here that it was popular at that time: www.langantiques.com/university/white-gold/

So it's possible. But equally, i'm open to it being from 1997. Who knows? Grin

The stamps aren't just about the metal. They also include a maker's mark which is usually initials, but can be a design.

TheInvestigator · 03/04/2019 22:23

There should also be a stamp for the assay office that stamped it, so you could send a pic to the assay office and ask if they know.

Alabasterangel6 · 03/04/2019 22:27

What the PP said. It should be assayed so that narrows the country of origin. Are there no other marks in the ring other than this? Is this marking flat into the ring or within a stamp border? Does it look hand marked?

SosigDog · 03/04/2019 22:30

Is that the only mark? UK jewellery will normally have the mark for the assay office, the mark for the type of gold, and a makers mark which is registered with the assay office (and the maker might have put an additional logo on it).

GrannyPenny · 03/04/2019 22:30

Definitely not a UK hallmark. Presumably the 750 mark is struck with a punch? What about the mark you have drawn - is that scratched into the surface or also struck? Would love to see a pic of the ring!

White gold was first used in the 1920s according to dr google so could feasibly be vintage.

Al2O3 · 03/04/2019 22:35

It looks like two seagulls mating. Sorry that doesn't help......

YourVagesty · 03/04/2019 22:38

Here you go sleuthers! For those who are interested in the mystery bauble in question...

Yeah, that's it unfortunately. No assay mark - just that one, with no border. And the numbers '750'. They aren't bordered either. Both numbers and the mark look struck to me as they look quite sharp.

Well I say no assay mark as I'm now assuming the two seagulls mating (thanks Al203 !!!!) are a maker's mark as opposed to an assay mark

Both the style of the setting and the mark have a Middle Eastern look to me. A beautiful piece, enjoy wearing it OP !

YourVagesty · 03/04/2019 22:50

Ada - fascinating! Hadn't thought of that. That's a new line of enquiry

Beautiful ring YourVagesty - hope you update if you find out anything more about it!

Wallabyone · 03/04/2019 23:14

It's beautiful

Solo · 03/04/2019 23:24

It's beautiful and looks Art Deco to me. I'm no expert though.

Boopeedoop · 03/04/2019 23:33

Oooh. No help at all but it's beautiful!

SosigDog · 03/04/2019 23:34

French imo. I’ve seen a lot of similar French Art Deco pieces.
