When do children generally stop napping?

My DS is still constantly napping, he's back up to 3 naps a day after briefly going down to just 2 naps for a month or so.

I feel like I'll rarely see him if this carries on (I work part time but studying soon too).

When do they generally just stop sleeping in the day? Or when did you notice a decline in their naps?

Thank you!

We stopped DDs naps not long after 2 because she was becoming increasing difficult to get to bed on an evening as well as struggling to go down for nap but napping for 3 hours! Most children drop naps by 3.

edgeofheaven · 02/04/2019 11:00

Around 3 years old for us but we had to make bedtime 30-45 min earlier to compensate as she became very cranky.

Honestly how long is a peace of string. I’m a childminder and it varies between 18m and 5 yrs.

Jacks Thank you!

Mine is up at 8, back down at 11.30ish, back down again at 2, and then back down again at 4ish. Then he's asleep for the night at 8pm.

I tried removing his latest nap but all it did was make him so exhausted that he slept from 8pm to 11am Sad

Both mine stopped at 18 months. They'd both cut down to one nap after lunch at about a year I think (it was a long time ago!).

BendydickCuminsnatch · 02/04/2019 11:02

My eldest stopped around 2 and 4 months. He wanted to drop them at 2 but I persevered for 4 more months. DS2 was born when eldest was 2 years 6 months hence I wanted to keep eldest napping 😄 didn’t work though.

How old is your baby? DS2 is 16 months and I’m trying to get him down to 1 nap as he’ll happily do an hour or 2 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon, as he gets up at 5, so needs naps, so gets up early.... vicious cycle.

My eldest has 2 friends who are nearly 4 and STILL nap. But they were both terrible terrible terrible night sleepers until recently.

chioccioladicioccolato · 02/04/2019 11:02

DS was 2 and 4 months. I know that because he stopped when DC2 was born. He'd been doing a cycle of no nap, long nap, short nap for about 6 months previously.

DC2 was quite partial to a nap and still regularly napping at 4.

SoyDora · 02/04/2019 11:02

Both mine stopped napping at 20 months, but still sleep 7-7 at night now at 5 and 3.

Seeline · 02/04/2019 11:02

How old is your DS Helen ?

Hadalifeonce · 02/04/2019 11:03

Each child is different, DS stopped at about 19 months, I was horrified. DD carried on until she was about 3, she would still sleep for England if school didn't get in the way.

SoyDora · 02/04/2019 11:04

How old is he OP?
Mine both went from 3 to 2 naps at around 6 months, 2 to 1 nap at abour a year, then dropped their last nap at 20 months.

Badwifey · 02/04/2019 11:04

How old is he op?

Mine stopped around 18 months. I've always had awful issues with her sleep though.

He sounds like he's sleeping a lot. My girl only slept like that as a new born.

HelenOn · 02/04/2019 11:06

He's 17 months

Mine dropped his second nap around his first birthday and started showing signs of wanting to drop his naps completely by his second birthday. A few months on and he will nap in the car if it's a journey over about 20 mins and he has been somewhere exciting and run around a lot. But daytime sleeps play merry hell with bedtime so we try to avoid driving from mid afternoon onwards!

How old is your little one? That is a lot of sleep!

HoldMyGirl · 02/04/2019 11:13

My ds is almost 5 and still falls asleep in the car most days Blush

BitchQueen90 · 02/04/2019 11:13

DS stopped napping when he started nursery at 2 years 3 months.

SoyDora · 02/04/2019 11:14

That sounds like a lot for a 17 month old, my 12 week old is up at 7.30, naps at 9.30, 12.30 and 4.

Seeline · 02/04/2019 11:14

Does he have to have naps if he is out and about - eg toddler group or something?
What time is he eating? Perhaps you could look at hte whole day's schedule and adjust it a little. That does sound like an awful lot of sleep at that age.

SoyDora · 02/04/2019 11:15

How long are his naps? Is it that he’s having 3 short naps (20-30 mins) rather than 1 long one?

CharminglyGawky · 02/04/2019 11:15

How long are the daytime naps? They seem quite close together so are they quite short?

3x20 minute naps is different to 3x1hr naps!

pansydansy · 02/04/2019 11:15

My dd is 2 years and 4 months and still has a good 2-3 hour nap in the day. She goes to bed at 6:30 and sleep until 7am. Org dd dropped her nap at 3.

CharminglyGawky · 02/04/2019 11:15

Ha! Cross post!

tried20names · 02/04/2019 11:17

We stopped my DC's morning nap when he started pre school at 2. He then started dropping his afternoon one when he turned 3, although he was tired and still needed it really. Now at 3.5 I actively keep him awake as I find he is harder to put to bed if he has slept during the day

HelenOn · 02/04/2019 11:18

They're around 1 hour in length each, but the morning nap can run closer to two hours a lot of the time.

He doesn't nap whilst in the company of other children, but it means he's exhausted if he doesn't get over 12 hours that night because he hasn't slept during the day.

When we had the childminder, she use to make a joke of it since she'd be dragging a pram around soft play for him to sleep in. If she didn't he would just come up to her and sit on her lap for a cuddle, then fall asleep.

SoyDora · 02/04/2019 11:20

So he’s potentially napping 4 hours a day plus 12 hours at night? 16 hours sleep in 24 hours is a lot for a 17 month old, it’s about the same as my 12 week old.
Do you have any other concerns about him, or just the sleeping? Some children do need more sleep than others.
