Can I collect DD from school early?

Going away this weekend and ideally need to leave early Friday afternoon. Would I be allowed to collect DD early from school?

You would really need to check with the school!

hidinginthenightgarden · 01/04/2019 13:24

I don’t think they can refuse and since it is the last day of term, they aren’t likely to be doing much that afternoon.
They might not be thrilled though.

ChicCroissant · 01/04/2019 13:25

I suspect you would improve your chances of getting the school to agree to this if you collected her after they had taken the afternoon register.

It’s not the last day of term here, they finish the week after.
You’ll have to ask them OP.

YolandaVerranda · 01/04/2019 13:26

Try to do it after afternoon registration if they are in primary school. That way they already get their attendance mark.

I volunteer in a school and on the Wednesday before Feb half term there were 5 children out of the class.

Our council won't fine you for 4 1/2 days but if you do 5 days then they will fine you.

School is not a prison, you can take them out at any time and an afternoon is fine. Some children miss half a lesson every week for music lessons.

RotundRhonda · 01/04/2019 13:28

Thanks all. I’m worried about asking them in case they say no! Then I’ll be stuck. Half term is 12th April here

Some of us are already on Easter break. Leeds always takes the first 2 weeks of April off no matter when Easter falls.

Some schools in Leeds break up this Friday to be more in line with Easter holidays as teachers working in Leeds schools but with their own children in neighbouring LAs means they won't get an Easter break with them.

SoyDora · 01/04/2019 13:29

I’m worried about asking them in case they say no!

But what’s the alternative?

DoneLikeAKipper · 01/04/2019 13:30

Why not just say your child has an appointment? Would you have to ‘prove’ that?

YolandaVerranda · 01/04/2019 13:30

@RotundRhonda if they say no it just goes down as an unauthorised absence but you can still take them out, like I said, school is not a prison.

It affects the school more than the child's personal record. Just tell them you are taking them.

Better than lying saying they are ill and then they come back all tanned and tell you they learnt to speak Spanish on the week they were "ill" Grin

Mrsjayy · 01/04/2019 13:31

Just let school know you will need to pick them up early I can't see school keeping them in till 3.15 and refusing

MyDcAreMarvel · 01/04/2019 13:31

They can’t stop you and they won’t care as long as they have their afternoon mark.

MammaMia19 · 01/04/2019 13:33

They can't say no, it's your child! Just tell them you are picking your child up at x time. It's only 1 day and to be honest most people would just let them have the day off, I would.

steppemum · 01/04/2019 13:35

definitely try and take them out after registration, then they don't lose attendance. Our school is always very happy for you to do that, as long as it isn't every weekend

dementedpixie · 01/04/2019 13:37

I tell the school when I need to collect the kids early, I don't ask them!

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 01/04/2019 13:37

If you can pick her up after afternoon registration then please do, it will count as a full day of attendance.

They wont stop you taking her out just let the teacher know you will be collecting her at 1.30pm when you drop her off in the morning.

ArgyMargy · 01/04/2019 13:38

It's not half term it's the Easter holidays. Why is it so much effort to correctly identify the school break? It gets so confusing when people just refer to every holiday as half term.

RotundRhonda · 01/04/2019 13:40

What’s the difference @ArgyMargy ? 🤷‍♀️ I thought it was half term?

OP posts:
ArgyMargy · 01/04/2019 13:42

You genuinely don't know what "half" means?

WinkysTeatowel · 01/04/2019 13:43

3 terms per school year, each split into 2 half terms by a half term holiday (1 week). Terms are divided by Christmas and Easter holidays (2 weeks each) and Summer holiday.

RotundRhonda · 01/04/2019 13:43

Got it Grin

It's spring break here! We're off for 2 weeks, back 4 days and then off for the Easter weekend

Orchidflower1 · 01/04/2019 13:45

Op if you’re in Easter England , Easter is end of term. Feb holiday, may and October are half terms. HTH

Orchidflower1 · 01/04/2019 13:45

X post winky!

Comefromaway · 01/04/2019 13:46

Half term happens half way through the term so October, February and May. The terms are divided from each other by Christmas, Easter & Summer holidays.
