What's the easiest/least fuss way to clean hard floors for a lazy cow?

I currently have a Vax steam mop which is ok but DH burst the handle right at the joint with the trigger and whilst he's tried to fix it with Duck tape and it sort of still works, I'm in the market for a replacement.

Or, is there an easier way to clean hard floors? Used to have a mop and bucket but found it a pain in the arse to be honest. I have engineered oak flooring most of downstairs with lino in the (tiny) bathrooms. I need maneuverability and the ability to get into small spaces as a priority as well as obviously easiness :o

I have a mixture of wood and tiled floors and I was being so lazy cleaning the floors properly due to the amount of time/faff. So I decided it was worth the investment of a decent cordless vac and a decent steam mop. I thought it was pricey, but in the end I decided to get a ‘shark’ flip steam mop. It’s worth it because despite being still lazy, I actually clean the floors more regularly because it’s really quick and the floors dry super fast. The reason it’s a bit pricier than other steam mops is because it flips the mop head over onto the clean side once it’s dirty, so you actually use both sides of the mop (so not just spreading dirt around and comes with two cloths. You don’t touch the head it’s got a flip system). It also doesn’t use too much water, so it drys in minutes.

I hoover @nd use an e cloth mop daily.

spugzbunny · 31/03/2019 21:59

My god I am such a minger! Only mumsnet has made me realise this.

I use orange floor cleaner in a bucket. I use a mop head that is both old school and old. Occasionally I think, eurgh that's gross, and I change it. I very rarely lick the floor and we discourage the child from doing the same.

Lemon you sound like a woman after my own heart..

I'm really trying to get into a better routine with everything. DH does the dishes, garden, cars, recycling/bins and ironing. DSs mostly do their rooms (DS2 is scared of the hoover Hmm ) and will put shopping away and fill/empty the dishwasher, hang out laundry, strip and change their beds etc but the rest is pretty much me. I actually like doing laundry, it's always up to date and I have a good routine, the rest i struggle with as we need a thorough clear out of the whole house so it doesn't ever feel like you've done a good job.

I'm changing my hours at work to do a 9 day fortnight and longer term I'm going to take up something just for me, but I think for the first year I just want to have that extra day every two weeks to achieve a positive clear out somewhere and get everything ship shape and into a good routine.

I’ll be getting another robo hoover in the near future, just a cheapy from amazon but they make such a difference.

AndromedaPerseus · 31/03/2019 22:09

A spray bottle filled with floor cleaner, a bucket of hand hot water and a mop. Spray small area of floor, swipe with wet mop, rinse mop in bucket, wring dry then repeat until whole floor is done.

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/03/2019 22:09

Is it the Bissell crosswave Muddy?

It does carpets too?

A mope and bucket isn’t that much of a ball ache.

I have engineered oiled oak floor and vinyl downstairs. I sweep it everyday then mop once a week. Floors look great, takes little time. Sweeping/vacuuming daily is what makes the biggest difference

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/03/2019 22:12

I'm now thinking I need more than one thing! Spray mop sounds like it would be best for the bathrooms and the utility room but maybe something more techy for the large areas. The karcher one seems to be for hard floors only which is what I was originally looking for , but that Bissell thing looks like it would do the carpets too.

I hate spray mops. Just pushes dirt around and leaves a film on the floor, plus you have to wash the cloths.

Buy a Bissell Crosswave.

PatricksRum · 31/03/2019 23:45

Bissell crosswave. Honestly the best thing I've ever bought.

Fluffyears · 01/04/2019 00:10

I use method floor cleaner with just water in my spray mop to give me enough moisture to use the mop. I wash all my clothes, hand towels, mops and my fabric bath mat together on a Sunday with powder, soda crystals and a cap of zoflora. Surely if you have done teatowels eycused through the week just chuck them in this wash.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 01/04/2019 00:26

Old fashioned mop and bucket for me, with a kettle of boiling water and a bit of flash multi purpose cleaner. Easy and dries quickly. And I love the smell.

Amore22 · 01/04/2019 06:12

Feel your pain regarding actually ckeaning the floors. My white kitchen tiles really need looking every day but that is unachievable atm for me. Trying to (mostly) follow The Organised Mum Method which means quick Hoover every day of high traffic areas which for us is kitchen, hall and downstairs loo. Spray mop worst areas every other day with Flash multipurpose. Steam mop kitchen about once per week. Engineered wooden floor in rest of downstairs has literally just been installed and too scared to use steam mop on that so well wrung out traditional mop or spray mop but NOT with bleach. Don't like cleaning floors but love a clean floor and I am the only mug in my household who will do it Hmm

MyOtherProfile · 01/04/2019 06:34

Oh my days this is one of those mn threads I didn't even know I needed! So with a spray mop do you really not need a bucket? I need to go and get one today!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 01/04/2019 06:45

I share your squeamishness about washing filthy cleaning cloths in with other wash loads op. It's the act of mopping itself that actually takes the time though isn't it? Filling a bucket with hot water and a capful of cif floor cleaner (the turquoise blue one) and then emptying it again down the loo or outside drain when finished probably adds 1 minute to the whole operation max. I think that's worth it to know your floors have had a proper washing. I have a vileda sponge mop that you don't need a special bucket and wringer for.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 01/04/2019 06:51

Just googled it - it's called a Vileda magic mop 3 action. £10.00.

StealthPolarBear · 01/04/2019 06:53

I've bought a vileda mop thing, with a clip on head and it's brilliant, really quick

StealthPolarBear · 01/04/2019 06:54

This. I bought a second one as its so good

Frouby · 01/04/2019 07:02

I have had a steam mop, a spray mop, a vildea thing. I still don't think that you can beat an old fashioned mop and bucket.

Whatever you use you still have to actually cover the whole floor. Apart from filling and emptying the mop bucket (which takes about a minute) an old fashioned mop takes the same time. No faffing with squirting or changing heads, just dunk and squeeze and mop!

I have hard floors all downstairs. Takes me about 15 minutes from start to finish to mop through. And the colour of the water afterwards, I wouldn't want the same pad moving the muck around.

StealthPolarBear · 01/04/2019 07:20

The vileda one is so big it covers a lot of floor with one sweep :)

TheQueef · 01/04/2019 07:23

Another mnet cleaning thread another impulse purchase from Amazon Sad

Just ordered a karcher £199 but split to give months interest free.
Will make a thread when I've tried it.

TheQueef · 01/04/2019 07:24

*5 months interest free

SleepingIsOverrated · 01/04/2019 07:25

Haven't RTFT so apologies if I'm repeating but please avoid the purple steam mop from amazon.

They offer a lifetime guarantee and they need to, it's shit. I had them send me out 3 replacements in 6 months before I gave up and bought the Vileda one instead. Swear by it now x

MrsMozartMkII · 01/04/2019 07:35

I have the Karcher thing. It's brill. The only issue is the amount of dog hair at shedding time (3 big dogs), but so looking as I stay on top of the grooming (which I should do anyway) it works well.
