I'm very very very excited to be getting a new mattress and want to make sure I pick an excellent one! Needs to be firm and extremely comfortable, please can I have your recommendations! Thanks

The Travelodge Sleepezee - obscenely comfortable and also firm: and as it's a real mattress and not memory foam, it keeps its shape and doesn't make you hot and sticky in the summer either.

I love mine so much I may have taken a few days off since it arrived just to luxuriate in its glory Blush

We went to Benson beds. They have a mattress-firmness-tester-machine-thingy and you lie on it, shuffle around a bit, it measures your pressure points and between it, and you you can work out your preferred firmness. Then test the ones in the shop.

We did this. Found a lovely bamboo one that both DH & I loved (firm) and have been in love with it ever since.

I wasn't expecting to be so impressed with Bensons to be honest - but they blew me away.

I would suggest going mid-week (if you can) though so it is less busy and you are more likely to get an experienced member of staff (just as they know their stuff/the mattresses - so can say "Oh if you love that one you will like this one too." If you are anywhere near Biggleswade thier was a lovely lady (Sheila I think her name was) who helped us.

shakeapoo · 31/03/2019 20:26

Oh ok good to know, wouldn't have thought of bensons!

@Hefzi see I was wondering about the premiere inn mattress! Is the travelodge one the same as travelodge mattresses (sorry if that's a silly question!) because I definitely prefer premier inn beds! Although your description of it sounds pretty good!

Yes--I had a lot of nights in the UK in hotels last year, so did a thorough road test Grin

But if Premier Inn suits you better, then go for that one: I did try Bensons as PP recommended, and also Dreams - but they were a lot more expensive for no discernible difference. I have a kingsize that was £400 Inc delivery as by chance there was a sixty quid off voucher when I went to buy it: in the shops, I couldn't find anything suitable for under £900. Tbf, though, the Travelodge was my first choice anyway - I just thought I should shop around in the interest of economy!

We have an Apollo Korinthian mattress. I remember it being an awful lot more expensive (c£500) when we bought it. We've had it 6 years now and it's as comfy as the day we bought it. I'm a fan of Premier Inn mattresses as they feel like a home from home.

This is a very firm mattress though so I guess it depends on your taste :)

shakeapoo · 31/03/2019 20:58

Thank you @WaxOnFeckOff I'll look into that. Much cheaper than the premier inn one. Although I don't particularly mind how much it costs (well, within reason) as it's such an important and rare purchase! Definitely want firm, hate squishy mattresses.

I do too, I had sacroiliac hip dysfunction when I was pregnant and my hips still bother me (18 years later) if the mattress is too soft or not sufficiently cushioned. This mattress is very firm but with a nice level of padding. It's very heavy/solid and deep. It also has the advantage that it is fully turnable.

shakeapoo · 31/03/2019 21:03

Oh I've just read a review of the premier inn one saying it's too soft and unsupportive! I remember loving premier inns although it's a while since I've been to one. Maybe I do need an expert to tell me what I need.

There is no substitute for actually going and lying on them in a shop tbh. The korinthian was a replacement for a very much loved mattress. We told the chap in the shop what we had before and liked and he recommended that one based on what we liked. We tried a few others in the shop but he was correct in his recommendation.

KitNCaboodle · 31/03/2019 21:08

We have an ikea mattress and it’s the most comfortable one we have had. Every time I get into it I remember just how good it is!

AllTheCakes · 31/03/2019 21:09

It’s worth checking out the new mattress in a box ones too, there are a few on the market now. Eve, Simba, Nectar and probably others. They are predominately online so offer you a long at home trial, which is a much better test than trying in a shop.

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/03/2019 21:11

Yes, those ones with a trial sound like a good idea. DSs have IKEA mattresses and say that they are comfy too.

SimonJT · 31/03/2019 21:13

I have a tempur, it was expensive, but it’s firm, supportive and cool, it will also last ages, which makes up for the price.

Justonemorepancake · 31/03/2019 21:14

Love love love my Otty mattress. You can return within 100 days if you don't like it. It's one of the firmer ones of that ilk.

Justonemorepancake · 31/03/2019 21:15

(It's a spring and foam hybrid)

Justkeeprollingalong · 31/03/2019 21:16

We've got a Simba. You get a 100day trial with free returns. Can't go wrong.
We didn't return it, it's fantastic!

ShesABelter · 31/03/2019 21:16

I have just ordered an otty mattress today. It's got 100 days trial and can return if your aren't happy. Medium to firm. Look a really good. It's got springs and memory foam but it's got a gel layer so it's not as warm as standard memory foam. Removable washable cover on the mattress. Got two free pillows which are meant to be amazing and 25 off so got king size and two pillows for 575 and if not happy will send it back within 100 days and they refund you. I spent hours researching what type I wanted and due to a sore back want a hybrid mattress.

MynameisJune · 31/03/2019 21:18

We’ve just got an Ikea one with a mattress topper as well, it’s the most amazing combination. I’m 33 weeks pregnant, don’t need any support pillows and get no hip/back pain now. It’s awesome. The mattress actually rates on Which about the Premier inn ones as that’s what we were going to get until DH signed up to Which to have a look.

PoptartPoptart · 31/03/2019 21:18

Tempur mattress. It was expensive but so worth it, and it’s guaranteed for 15 years. My parents have had theirs for 20 years now and it’s still going strong and as firm as ever.
I have a chronic bad back and this mattress has been a lifesaver. I love my bed!

SpamChaudFroid · 31/03/2019 21:19

I have am Otty too! It makes me sigh with happiness every time I get into bed!

TeddyIsaHe · 31/03/2019 21:20

Ikea Høvåg here! God I love it so much. Was apprehensive due to the price, but it’s better than the £1000 mattress it replaced. I never want to get out of bed.

Jsmith99 · 31/03/2019 21:28

We wanted a firm, supportive mattress so we bought a John Lewis Ortho pocket spring 1800, made by Hypnos. It is VERY firm. On the first night it felt like sleeping on the floor, and I thought we had made a horrendous mistake. On the second night it felt a bit better, and we soon came to love the support it provides. Highly recommend if you want a firm mattress.

LadyR77 · 31/03/2019 21:43

IKEA Hovag are brilliant. We have the firm one and it's the best mattress I've ever had.

Darkbaptism · 31/03/2019 21:46

I’ve had a SIMBA for over a year, I still love it - would definitely recommend.
