How many times have you seen your GP/doctor in the last year?

Four times for me, which feels like quite a lot. Twice to report bleeding in between periods, once to check prescription medication and once because I was worrying that leg pain might be caused by a dvt (it wasn't, and I was embarrassed to waste their time). So really, I take up a lot of NHS resources in spite of being a basically healthy middle aged woman. All I can say in my favour is that I don't bother them with colds or sore throats or the joint pain I get that I assume is OA. Just wondered if this is typical of how others use their GP. Do you think 4 visits a year makes you one of those nuisance patients that they dread seeing?

Twice in 2018, about a hernia. From that I had a scan at the hospital, a consultant appt, two pre op appts and then surgery in Dec. Nothing so far in 2019.

Also went once with DS1. Not at all with DS2

Dontbestupidagain · 30/03/2019 21:53

Last went 18 months ago. Generally don't go very often as am lucky to be a healthy soul.

AndromedaPerseus · 30/03/2019 22:00

Last year I went to my GP surgery for the following: GP to check a suscipious mole, smear test with practice nurse and a middle age health check with HCA

I saw a Nurse Practitioner about a month ago for a UTI.

I last saw a GP more than 3 years ago now.

Sammy867 · 30/03/2019 22:13

I feel like most of my problems stemmed from the gp so I try to avoid them like the plague.

I had my girl and had not been in over 5 years and even then it was a simple Uti.
we chat at my 6 week check and they suggest the implant is the best contraceptive for me. The implant was placed but it was wrapped around a nerve in my arm so I kept getting shooting tingling pains and numbness so they decide it’s best to remove it and put me on the combined pill (despite me asking whether this is okay as my mum had a blood clot but she was over 50 so it’s fine- he even showed me the computer screen I remember)

Cue me getting a pulmonary embolism so they put me on blood thinners and the depo. Blood thinners cause gastro reflux so They put a camera down to check on the damage and me on lansoprazole which causes bowel problems and folic acid deficiency. Depo causes constant bleeding. So here I am 3 years later and I’ve just stopped all the drugs and feel better now than in the last 3 years and never again will optionally take any drugs

Miraculously all my symptoms have gone since the drugs were stopped

RainbowMum11 · 30/03/2019 22:15

None at all until I had a breakdown in Feb, so have been in a few times to discuss medication and support - she's been brilliant, I was really struggling to function, am starting to improve now thankfully.

killpop · 30/03/2019 22:16

I just checked the online patient portal but it only lists the previous 4 months - 7 appointments. I've also had 4 hospital outpatient appointments in that time. I do have chronic illnesses, and am very grateful that the NHS keeps me alive.

Ambi · 30/03/2019 22:17

I last went 3yrs ago with a large abscess on my back which I was sent directly to A&E. I rarely visit the GP. It may all change as I age and it all goes south.

Userisi · 30/03/2019 22:19

This will be my 4th time in a year too, funnily enough also for mid cycle bleeding (what did they do btw please?!) prior to that I hadn't gone in like a year.

Ikeameatballs · 30/03/2019 22:21

Once for contraception and saw the practice nurse for a smear test. Think I usually go once/twice year.

DP hasn’t been in the past 4 years.

cicciolina · 30/03/2019 22:23

About four to six times which wasn’t too much compared to several years ago when I went 45 times in one year :(

OddestSock · 30/03/2019 22:25

Twice, and I've also had 2 telephone appointments (to get medication for depression). Prior to that, it was when I had my 2nd child, 7 years ago.

RomanyQueen1 · 30/03/2019 22:25

Three times since November, but had been at least 12 years before this.

SingaSong12 · 30/03/2019 22:30

The GP once I think because I need a full repeat prescription as moving house and to ask if their computer would easily print summary of diagnosed conditions (it won’t, but GP said there is a chance new GP will have the same computer system and be able to see the record). I would have had a phone appointment but they go quickly. Really the only way for me to see GP is be there at 8.30 to make on the day appointment.

NHS generally quite a lot - broken ankle so a number of visits and physiotherapy, laser on my nose for nose bleeds.

DailyMailSucksWails · 30/03/2019 22:34

Twice. Breast lump & funny skin growth.
Both completely unnecessary (both benign).

I get impression (listening to socialising GPs chat to each other) that 'frequent' is >= once a month when there's nothing GP can actually do for them.

DonnaDarko · 30/03/2019 22:39

I havent seen a GP in 3 years. The last time I had a GP appointment was to tell them I was pregnant (cos they refer you in my area).

Before that, I hadn't seen a GP in a few years either.

I don't really get ill though, and I am mostly quite healthy, i just like cake and chocolate a bit too much

FrenchyQ · 30/03/2019 22:42

I've seen a private gp twice in the last year, both times for joint pain

Toomanystorieslost · 30/03/2019 22:44

I have injections every six weeks usually with the nurse but sometimes the doctor if the nurse is busy.
Actual appointments though? Twice in a year I reckon. I did once go five years but I have various conditions now.

neversleepagain · 30/03/2019 22:47

Me once.
Dh zero. He has been to the GP 4 times in the 10 years we've been married.
DC: zero.

FluffyBumps · 30/03/2019 22:50

I try hard not to go because every time so do they find something wrong and then I end up 'stuck in the system.

I think I've been 8 or 9 times in them last 12 month's. 3 since Xmas.

I had cancer 2 years ago and although currently all clear it has had a huge impact on my overall well-being and health. Tbh I feel ravaged and as if I've aged 20 years in the past 2 years.

happypotamus · 30/03/2019 22:51

I think 3 times.
Once for a repeat prescription (they make me go once a year to check everything is ok with the chronic condition for which they are prescribed)
went at the end of the year when I was persuaded by DH and my manager to discuss my exhaustion, suddenly onset of crying at work which I diagnosed as anxiety because it came with the physical symptoms of racing heart, insomnia, lack of appetite
was phoned and asked to come in a couple of months later to be told that the blood tests I had had after the previous appointment showed my vitamin D level to be ridiculously low, which might account for all my symptoms

Also, seen HCA twice for blood tests and practice nurse to discuss having a copper coil

I am assuming this question relates to my own health not the times I have taken DC to see the same doctors.

fluffiphlox · 30/03/2019 22:51

None.

Husband also no visits. We’re both around 60

mustdrinkwaternotwine · 30/03/2019 22:52

DH & I are in our 40s; DC are primary school age; none of us have any health conditions so we are very infrequent visitors... or were until this year.
So far:
DH - one appt & subsequent trip to A&E
DC1 - one appt & subsequent hosp referral
DC2 & me - nothing so far but know each of us needs to get something non-urgent checked out so waiting for the Easter holidays when we may be able to get an appt

anniehm · 30/03/2019 22:54

None

Aspieteach · 30/03/2019 22:59

Twice. The first time was for a referral and the second time was because after he'd made the referral, I was sent a questionnaire to complete and it said to make an appointment with my GP and give him the form.

Those were the first appointments I'd made for myself for about 20 years.

But I've taken my daughter loads of times over the years. Usual childhood illnesses plus a congenital problem.
