I wondered if someone might mention sun sneezing! It was a relevation to me that not everyone is, those who are like me think everyone is, and those who aren't don't know what the hell you're on about!

CryptoFascist · 30/03/2019 17:54

Difference between loud sneezes and performance sneezing is the vocalisation.
Surely it's not necessary to shout while sneezing? ExH used to actually yell his sneezes out, he got glares in public. He was perfectly capable of not shouting though as he stopped once the glares started to embarrass him (much, much later than they began to embarrass me).

MitziK · 30/03/2019 19:13

If you can breathe out of your mouth without making a HAAAAR sound or blow a candle out without making an OOOOO sound, you can do a 'normal' sneeze. It's just not engaging your vocal chords - as is proven when the shouters are genuinely caught unawares by a sneeze and it sounds perfectly normal.

(I hate losing a sneeze before it happens, so deliberately look towards a light to make them happen. Even knowing I'm going to sneeze, I'm still able to not shout it, as I don't need attention in my life that much).

elQuintoConyo · 30/03/2019 19:22

If i try to hold it in and keep it 'petite', it just comes out of my arse. Not great in polite company. So i try and do medium sneezes. At home they're real Andy Dwyer sneeze-and-headbutt-the-wall jobs!

LividLaughLove · 30/03/2019 19:50

My sneezes are quiet and multiple. Delicate "choo-choo-choo" types. I often get to six and it's actually NOT massively dissimilar to orgasm in a tingly-non-genital way.

I DESPISE performance shout-sneezers, usually male. As pp says, absolutely no need for it. A sneeze comes from your nose and not your vocal chords. I do have a visceral, want-to-punch reaction to them. And yes, I have misophonia.

picklemepopcorn · 30/03/2019 20:54

A whole tranche of people don't seem to realise that there is no need to shout the words ah chop while sneezing. The same people think you need to shout ' yarrgh ' while throwing up.

Femodene · 30/03/2019 22:32

There’s no need for those people, who scream while sneezing, if they say they can’t help it, they can, as posted upthread I’m sure they can blow out a candle without screaming, so can just sneeze, but choose to bellow like a total nob. No need to strain your vocal chords.

poglets · 31/03/2019 02:33

Dramatic, repeated sneezing. I hate it when people do this. Arghhh.

DinosApple · 31/03/2019 02:51

I find the shouters and the squeakers annoying Grin. One for the shock to everyone around. The other because the squeak just doesn't sound satisfying or effective.

I sneeze out of my mouth, but don't shout.
My nasal passages are narrow, and I have one blocked ear so it physically cannot come out purely through my nose. They generally catch me by surprise.

Smotheroffive · 31/03/2019 03:04

All sorts here. I can sneeze in a quiet trumpetty way just through my nose, suppressing and stifling it with mouth shut, but I worry as its a risk that stuff will come out with blast of air.

I can sun sneeze too.

Also get taken by surprise by more forceful once which is when I can occasionally make a noise.

Hate a friends sneeze that's a really loud screamy shout! Just think they are annoying and haven't learnt they dont have to shout with it, like people who say haitch

DuffBeer · 31/03/2019 03:19

My mother is a performance sneezer

ACHOOOO OOOO OOOOO OOOOO OOOOOO OOOOO OOOOO OOOO
X 5

Fucking irritating.

Oswin · 31/03/2019 03:46

I was a really shy child. So not to draw attention to myself I started to inward sneeze.
I held my nose and closed my mouth while sneezing for years.
I don't need to hold my nose anymore. It automatically goes inwards.
I would not recommend anyone do this.
It hurts so bad. When I get a cold it's like I've broken my ribs.

Elderflower14 · 31/03/2019 05:14

My late DH was in the SAS. Obviously in certain situations they couldn't be heard sneezing.... They were told to press hard under their noses to stop them!

EllebellyBeeblebrox · 31/03/2019 12:55

I am quite a loud sneezer but if I try and hold it in it tends to lead to a snotsplosion which is worse.

PickleFish · 31/03/2019 13:04

No. I have a loud sneeze, have been trying to learn to sneeze more quietly, but it just doesn't happen. I'm a very quiet person generally and have a quiet speaking voice, and don't like attention on me, so would love to be able to be more subtle.

Smotheroffive · 31/03/2019 15:45

Oswin that sounds like you've damaged your lungs!

I know putting too much pressure on your lungs, like blowing up loads of balloons can cause severe issues.

BertieBotts · 31/03/2019 15:49

I've literally never heard of stifling a sneeze except on MN - baffling that it might be considered rude to sneeze FFS. Obviously don't sneeze in someone's face but turning away is enough.

Also learned on MN that this "sneeze stifling" can actually be dangerous - so don't!

MyHairNeedsASnip · 31/03/2019 15:50

My mum does a screaming 'Aaaaaaaarrrrggggghhhhh' before the choo. I used to be so embarrassed as a teenager when she did it while we were out. I don't care any more, but it does make me jump Smile

Hazeintheclouds · 31/03/2019 16:05

I hate people who sneeze loudly. It is rude and unnecessary.

reallybadidea · 31/03/2019 16:12

I work in a job where sudden, loud noises, such as sneezes could be really dangerous. Funnily enough we all manage to sneeze quietly.

Smotheroffive · 31/03/2019 16:25

Intrigued reallybad 🤔
