I sneeze like a cat. Very understated.
Hate performance sneezes I almost fell on the train tracks a few years ago because of some twat with Brian Blessed sneezes.

bonzo77 · 30/03/2019 08:08

Of course one can control the volume if you try. I’ve noticed that the people who won’t tend to be people who are often rather insensitive to other people’s comfort, attention seekers or generally rather thoughtless and selfish. It’s a bit like behaviour around farting. Perfectly normal and natural, but also considerate to try to do it in a way that doesn’t affect other people.

So, I can do little stifled sneezes, and it was my standard sneeze until I had children.

Nowadays, unless I'm prepared to clench, or have an empty bladder, I do the full sneeze as it's better for my pelvic floor 😁

DH has a very loud sneeze. When Star Wars was digitally remastered and re-released, we went to see it in the cinema. He let out a huge sneeze at the moment the Death Star blew up, to much hilarity from the cinema audience..!

Autumnchill · 30/03/2019 08:25

I'm a quiet sneezer but my bloody husband is loud and with no build up or notice. He's done it a couple of times right behind me and made me drop things because he's startled me. Best friend is the same and I find it so annoying.

SadSackStruggling · 30/03/2019 08:26

'Performance sneezes' brilliant description.
I know a few of these people. They are the same ones who shout when they talk and generally grandstand.

Spottyowl · 30/03/2019 08:30

I can easily control sneeze volume. My husband practically shouts at the top of his lungs when he sneezes which I have always thought a bit unnecessary.

PosiePerkinandPootle · 30/03/2019 08:43

I do very loud sneezes, I can't control them as I'm too busy putting all my effort into clenching so I don't wet my knickers.

DelurkingAJ · 30/03/2019 08:50

Depends why I’m sneezing. With a cold I can control it. If I’m surprised by bright light then I don’t have the chance to.

Brian Blessed sneezes GrinGrinGrin

Dramatical · 30/03/2019 10:24

No. They are ridiculously loud. I usually fart and/or dribble some piss too for good measure.

letsmovethefuckon · 30/03/2019 11:49

Absolutely can control. You just sort of hold it in by closing your mouth and eyes, and there's no drama and a perfectly nice sneeze.

It probably varies from person to person but when H sneezes, I must say, it seems excessive.

letsmovethefuckon · 30/03/2019 11:51

In fact, the last time my MIL sneezed around here, she scared the cat so badly we didn't see her for at least an hour or 2.

I don't really get it. We must all be wired a bit differently sneeze wise.

letsmovethefuckon · 30/03/2019 11:52

We didn't see the cat for an hour or 2. Not the MIL. Wink

clairemcnam · 30/03/2019 11:53

If I try and hold it in, it forces itself out. It is less loud, but always comes with a load of spittle. It is far better IMO to do a very loud sneeze, than a quieter sneeze with masses of spittle.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 30/03/2019 13:02

This is another weird thing I find about Mumsnet. I’m sure people are judging me for my loud sneezes whereas I just can’t help it Confused

JeezOhGeeWhizz · 30/03/2019 15:23

Yeah it's called performance sneezing. Also hate it when people sneeze over and over and over and over and over and won't blow their nose.

clairemcnam · 30/03/2019 15:34

How can you blow your nose when you are actually sneezing? After you stop sneezing you can.

donajimena · 30/03/2019 15:38

I've a cold atm. No amount of nose blowing will prevent me sneezing Confused

clairemcnam · 30/03/2019 15:41

Ah, I had not realised she was suggesting that blowing your nose stops you sneezing. It makes no difference to me.

Raera · 30/03/2019 16:06

My DH can suppress his loud sneezes but he has glaucoma and it's really bad for his eye pressure to do so.

OldAndWornOut · 30/03/2019 17:30

Loud sneezes make me do a little bit of weewee.
More constrained ones give me a bit more control.
