DD and her friend are having a sleepover and want to watch a 'scary film'

Any suggestions?

(I will check with friends mum too)

If witches isnt for children who is it for? It's a childrens movie. No teen would be interested in it.

My children younger than 10 have seen Gremlins..depends on the kid.

Little shop is a bit fucked up for kids when you think about it

PrinceOfPies · 29/03/2019 19:34

Oh yes! Ghostbusters. Especially the newone if they haven't seen it

TheSheepofWallSt · 29/03/2019 19:35

Casper is a great film, but they might think it’s babyish.
What about something like beetlejuice?

What about a Twighlight film or Lord of the Rings?

Onceuponacheesecake · 29/03/2019 19:36

My DS is 5 and loves goosebumps, the witches and hocus Pocus so I feel they are a bit young?
How about signs? That's a bit scary. Not horror though.

DecumusScotti · 29/03/2019 19:36

It’s not technically horror, but Return to Oz is really creepy. The Wheelers and the deadly desert and the witch with her interchangeable decapitated heads... not to mention an adorably wee Fairuza Balk. I’m a bit Confused that it’s apparently a PG...

Honeyroar · 29/03/2019 19:37

The Woman in Black or It??!! They're really scary, not starter horror films.

EnidButton · 29/03/2019 19:38

I wouldn't let a 10 year old watch Strangers Things! No way. Besides it's a series so a too long for a sleep over.

Beetle juice is a bit old too I think. Haven't seen Ghostbusters for years but the merchandise for it in the 80's was definitely aimed at kids. My DN had the car and a big Slimer toy.

EnidButton · 29/03/2019 19:40

It. Kids love clowns

Shock Not after watching that they won't! It's a 15.

Saisong · 29/03/2019 19:43

Coraline would fit the bill

Mississippilessly · 29/03/2019 19:45

I would say The Witches, Gremlins or Jaws.

BlueMerchant · 29/03/2019 19:45

My DS (9) loves Goosebumps 1&2.
Maybe ' The Others'?

Katinkka · 29/03/2019 19:47

Monster house

Hobbes8 · 29/03/2019 19:49

My two have seen ghostbusters and they’re younger than 10. I reasoned that I remember watching it in the cinema, and I must have only been about 7, so it should be fine. They were completely unfazed by the ghost bits, but I’d forgotten how sweary it was. I think that’s true of a lot of 80s films.

Gabrielknight · 29/03/2019 19:53

I remember watchin scream, Blair witch and pet cemetery at that age.... Scared us silly but we had a blast! Just go with hocus pocus!

ForeverFaithless · 29/03/2019 19:55

Addams Family is creepy enough without getting too serious.
My 10yr old did not like Hocus Pocus or Beetlejuice, liked Goosebumps and Ghost Busters.
Some mentioned above are completely unsuitable and would give some kids nightmares for years, check the ratings.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 29/03/2019 19:57

Gremlins,my 5 year old watched it with no issues.Ghoatbusters and hocus pocus are very dated.

PrinceOfPies · 29/03/2019 19:58

I'd be furious tbh if someone let my 10 year old watch IT and I think I'm pretty lax.

bumblenbean · 29/03/2019 20:01

When I was that age my best friend’s parents were really relaxed about what we watched and I watched all sorts at her house - IT, aliens, ghost watch, Friday 13th. My mum was aghast when she found out Shock

Although I liked watching that stuff at the time and it didn’t do me any harm, as an adult I now definitely think things like IT are too much at that age. The witches is a good suggestion.

What about arachnophobia? Maybe not if they hate spiders ...

Persimmonn · 29/03/2019 20:01

The Witches and Goosebumps are perfect for 10 year olds. I’d ask the parents if they want their kids watching them though. Dd loves horror but she has friends who get scared really easily.

Persimmonn · 29/03/2019 20:04

I found Hocus Pocus to be really inappropriate for kids. The way they kept talking about virgins and the young teen boy. Sickening. Luckily my kids didn’t understand or ask me what a virgin is, but we won’t ever watch it again.

poseybobblehat · 29/03/2019 21:17

The Nightmare before Christmas ? (Even though it's March !)

Ribbonsonabox · 29/03/2019 21:24

The Woman in Black, The Haunting and The Others are all rated 12 but are pretty scary so it would depend on your child.
Also try vintage scifi like The Creature from the Black Lagoon or Quatermass and the Pit etc

I loved horror at that age and I still do! I watched Scream and The Shining at that age lol and absolutely loved them! I wouldn't let my own children watch those at 10.... but I'd allow the woman in black or other 12 rated films if I knew my child wasnt easily scared.
Like I said ot depends on the child though... for some 10 year olds there would be no way they could watch the woman in black.

Angelinthenightx · 29/03/2019 22:28

Goosebumps 1 or 2 bit more modern and not too scary for that age group at all as they are a PG so im sure the other parents would be fine with it. Gremlins is also a PG now was a 12 when i was young.

zippey · 30/03/2019 07:30

At that age you want a fun horror movie. So I think sonethibg like
Arachnophobia
Joe Dante’s The Hole
Case 39 (about an evil child)
Lights Out (can’t remember its rating)

I’d say no to IT or woman in Black - these are about children’s deaths or suicides, best avoided at age 10.
