Help - son requested a day in countryside near Newcastle!

Ds is off school tomorrow and wants a day out (ideal as we can’t afford to go away this Easter)

His criteria are: a day in countryside with nice things to see, somewhere he’s never been before, an adventure!

We had an amazing day out near Berwick once and I think he wants to recreate this - we looked round a castle, went on a steam train and had cake in a coffee shop.

We used to live tynemouth and have explored a lot over there, am thinking poss the Lake District but where over there would fulfil this criteria? Apart from centerparcs i’ve Never been 😬🙈

Any suggestions gratefully received!

My family is from Tynemouth!

We love going to Warkworth and Bamburgh both have amazing castle and coasts. Not too long to drive to.

Keswick is great but a bit of a drive. Kirkley Hall near Ponteland is good for animals and a walk in the woods then you could go to Belsay Hall for a hall and a castle. Plenty of places to eat about too.

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/03/2019 19:37

Tanfield Railway is good but I don't know the opening times.

Friends have said the Northumberland County Zoo is great for young children and you're not too far from Dunstanburgh or Walkworth castles.

Vinorosso74 · 28/03/2019 19:37

There's loads of places on Northumberland. Wallington National Trust is good.
There's the castles-Warkworth (well what's left of it) not far down the road is Alnmouth with a bit of a beach. You could go somewhere like Kielder-haven't been in years so unsure what exactly is there apart from trees and reservoir. There is Kirkley Hall with a small "zoo".

Holy Island if the tides are at the right times.

OhTinky · 28/03/2019 19:39

Alnwick Castle? Has treehouse and gardens and, I think, water features?

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/03/2019 19:39

Keilder has lots to do. Nice walks, maze, crazy golf, playground, bike hire.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 28/03/2019 19:41

Beamish museum, Gibside. Love Warkworth vastle and Bamburgh castle/beach.

Teenytinyvoice · 28/03/2019 19:42

Cragside is a fantastic NT house, and there is a nearby pretty town and moorland

Doghorsechicken · 28/03/2019 19:45

We loved the beamish museum last time we visited!

MichonnesBBF · 28/03/2019 19:47

Another vote for Beamish and once you have paid admission you can revisit for a whole year with the same ticket.

Hidethesausage · 28/03/2019 19:53

Raby Castle in Staindrop, Co Durham is brilliant, with a deer park etc

AwkwardSquad · 28/03/2019 19:55

Another vote for Beamish!

Meretricious · 28/03/2019 19:55

Hadrians wall on a nice day is fab.

AwkwardSquad · 28/03/2019 19:56

Alnwick and Alnmouth are a good combo, too.

Rarfy · 28/03/2019 19:58

Not sure how far Brimmam Rocks is from you but lovely there.

Hollowvictory · 28/03/2019 19:59

Hadrians wall
Bamburgh
Warkworth

Hollowvictory · 28/03/2019 20:00

Beamish is fantastic

Hollowvictory · 28/03/2019 20:01

Or get the train to Edinburgh it only takes an hour. Not courryside but Scotland is fun!

TheMagicTorch · 28/03/2019 20:03

Alnwick - the castle and gardens are beautiful plus you have barter books.
Alnmouth is nearby and has a lovely beach.

scaevola · 28/03/2019 20:10

Beamish is fabulous, but not exactly a day in the country

My suggestions have already been mentioned: Bamburgh, Alnwick, Hadrians Wall (Housesteads) or Linsdisfarne (depending on the tide). I hope those aren't all to coastal!
