Would you use the word TERF in class?
Or would you find the term rude? I don't want an argument and I don't want this to become a trans thread. So please no one have a pop either way. Just curuous about the specific circumstances in the OP

Thanks

I don't see the word TERF as a slur so it would depend upon the context

Bezalelle · 27/03/2019 09:19

I would try to avoid it, but if circumstances required its use, I would indicate that it is a slur. Very much depends on the lecture/topic.

Bezalelle · 27/03/2019 09:19

Oh - I misunderstood. I AM gender critical. Sorry if I skew the results!

NappyDisco · 27/03/2019 09:25

Thanks anyway bezalle! :)

Quaintduck so you would happily use it as a short hand? Thanks for answering. If one of your students said they found it offensive would you use it anywah?

OP posts:
NappyDisco · 27/03/2019 09:27

Oh and also please, would you use it for discussing actual radical feminism or just anyone thats gc or in your opinion transphobic?

OP posts:
QueenOfTheTofuTree · 27/03/2019 09:27

I don't think you should use such a misogynistic term in class, no. It's unprofessional for one.

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 27/03/2019 09:28

Not sure where that random for one came from 🤔

CarpetGate · 27/03/2019 09:28

Well, yes. I would also use the terms "homophobic" or "racist", regardless of whether that offends homophobes or racists. Obviously.

NappyDisco · 27/03/2019 09:30

I am gender critical and was surprised to hear it used by my lecturer but I'm wondering if people who are not just don't see it as rude. I don't want anyone to feel they cant answer. I'd prefer honest answers!

OP posts:
NappyDisco · 27/03/2019 09:30

Queenof tofu are you GC though or not please?

OP posts:
QueenOfTheTofuTree · 27/03/2019 09:31

People do tried to view TERF as a slur and a one that is only ever used exclusively towards women.

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 27/03/2019 09:31

I am gender critical.

NappyDisco · 27/03/2019 09:32

Carpet gate would you mind answering my follow up questions to quaintduck please?

OP posts:
QueenOfTheTofuTree · 27/03/2019 09:33

And no gender critical does not = transphobic. So comparing it to people who are homophobic or racist does not work.

NappyDisco · 27/03/2019 09:35

Queenofthetofu while I do agree with you this is kind of important to me and I'd like to get honest answers from people and I think the best for that is if people arent concerned they will get a bunfight.

OP posts:
NappyDisco · 27/03/2019 09:36

So while I can't dictate thr discourse I'd really rather this not be another trans thread please.

There has been plenty of push-back against the term, and most mainstream news outlets (for example) don't use it because it's regarded as a slur. So I very much doubt that the person using the term was ignorant of its use as a weapon to slur gender critical feminists, or themselves using it in any other way.

S1naidSucks · 27/03/2019 10:09

I’m sorry OP, as I’m GC, so notbthe kind of poster you’re looking for, but I’ll comment anyway.

Personally I would find a tutor/lecturer using the term terf as a threat. It implies that anyone that doesn’t agree with their opinion is immediately wrong and ‘the enemy’. I would be concerned that a tutor/lecturer using those terms would be letting their own personal bias affect their teaching and it is a threat to those students that disagree with the slur, that they need to shut up and conform with the tutor’s/lecturer’s bias.

GCAcademic · 27/03/2019 10:12

Did anyone challenge the lecturer's use of the term, OP?

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 27/03/2019 10:18

While some people may be happy to assert that it isn’t a slur, it’s a certainly not accurate. Many people it is thrown at are neither radical feminists, nor trans exclusionary. I would expect an academic to know better

NappyDisco · 27/03/2019 10:21

That is 100% the impression I get from her generally actually. She's not teaching students how to think. Shes teaching then what to think and if they disagree there is an issue.

The terf comment was thrown in there almost out of place as we were discussing sex work and I feel like she wanted to say (and you're probably a terf as well)

GeordieGenes · 27/03/2019 10:22

To the people who aren't gender critical: why do you support gender stereotypes? What good do they offer humanity?

NappyDisco · 27/03/2019 10:24

As we weren't even discussing it and I'd already been doing wrong think about sex work I couldn't really be bothered to have that conversation too, so I didn't say anything. It had been a very long hour at that point...

OP posts:
NappyDisco · 27/03/2019 10:25

Geordie there are literally thousands of other threads to discuss all that.
