Help!! Need a bag that fits Ryanair new dimensions that I can buy in a shop tomorrow?

DS is going on a trip which has been organised by his friend's family- they are flying with Ryanair. We have never flown with them before and have only just found out the restrictions on bag size for the free hand luggage, which is all he can take. Even his school rucksack is too big.

The size of bag is 40 x 25 x 20 cm - has anyone bought a bag to fit this size for a Ryanair flight and if so, please could you tell me where from?

I have been googling rucksacks but most of them don't give the dimensions in the description so not much help!

This is slightly bigger, as long as it's not overfilled and can fit in the sizer it will be file: www.argos.co.uk/product/8439721

If you look on Amazon for aryan air bag...lots of bags will give sizes in the description.

Ryan Air also have their own website selling bags.

youmeandconchitawurst · 26/03/2019 20:26

Cabinmax does them the right size (but be careful not to get the other hand luggage size). An Arezzo stowaway XL 20l.

Don't know where you are for stockists.

OP I bought this one a few years ago and it amazing weighs nothing and reasonably priced. I

Matalan also do these or similar.

As an aside have you paid the £8 each way fee for hand luggage they now require?

ssd · 26/03/2019 20:35

On the website just now you can add £10to pay for a priority pass nd a cabin bag as well as the free personal bag allowed on

soulrider · 26/03/2019 20:36

I've not had an issue with a standard 'schoolbag' sized rucksack for taking on as free hand luggage.

eleflump · 26/03/2019 20:37

Hi - that CabinMax one looks great and I can get one day delivery - thank you!

I daren't send him with one bigger than the quoted size as he is travelling with his friend's family and I don't want to cause them any trouble!

No charge for the hand luggage - the rules changed last year and you can now take just a bag of the size I stated for free - we didnt realise, hence the panic!

Sorry OP I just read your post properly 🤦🏼‍♀️ it really is worth paying the £8 each way to upgrade the hand luggage size. They are robbing bastards though

eleflump · 26/03/2019 20:40

DS is very lucky in that the trip has been paid for by his friend's family so I can't really contact them about adding additional baggage on, but thanks for the tip - it wouldn't have been a problem if we had read the guidelines earlier!

As long as the bag isn’t solid and can be squashed into the cage of that size, it can actually be bigger.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 26/03/2019 20:41

I’ve just flown with Ryan Air and took a school sized rucksack that was slightly larger than the dimensions. They don’t even look at your bag to be honest as you queue for the gate then you’re on, none of the staff checked anyone’s bag size. . As long as it fits under the seat in front it’s fine.

eleflump · 26/03/2019 20:41

And agree with your description...!!!

I'm going away with Ryanair in 2 weeks OP and had a friend not told me of being charged a fortune at the check in desk for a teeny suitcase I wouldn't have known about it either!

eleflump · 26/03/2019 20:43

Really? They don't check?? Wondering whether to risk his school rucksack now...what is the procedure for checking the size of the bag??

OP posts:
eleflump · 26/03/2019 20:45

I know Gunpowder - I just thought you could always take a cabin sized suitcase so didn't bother checking til now!

tkmaxx nearby?

TruffleShuffles · 26/03/2019 20:50

I’ve flown a few times since they have changed the rules and the only people I have seen stopped and forced to pay extra are people still trying to get on the large 10kg carry on case. I’ve never seen them check and measure anything that’s a bit bigger than it should be, I think as long as it looks like it will go under the seat they don’t mind. To be honest I’m still too scared to risk anything bigger than the size listed as I know with my luck I’ll get stopped.

eleflump · 26/03/2019 20:51

Yes - tkmaxx nearby but never have much luck in our local one!

How do they check? They have a metal "sizer".... they claim it is actually slightly larger than the stated allowance size and the rule is if you can squish your bag into it you are OK.

How closely they check the size of the cabin bag depends on the airport and the airline: Easyjet were laid back in one airport going out and really annoyingly applying strict rules on the return trip. I had a nasty moment when someone in front of me had to squash her bag into the sizer... she had a bit of a job but did manage it.... personally I thought my bag was the same size as hers but mine was not checked.
How you can not know (if you made the booking - obviously not OP as she has not dealt with the tickets) I don't see: I have had three emails from Ryanair reminding me about the under the seat size in the past week.... although I suspect this is in order to try and persuade me to purchase a bigger allowance.

RoseReally · 26/03/2019 21:17

I fly a lot with Ryanair and they haven't checked my bag size recently. They mainly just want to be sure it will fit under the seat in front and won't need to go in the overhead locker. I have a Trespass rucksack from Amazon but I'm sure a schoolbag would be fine.

LadyKylieShagworthy · 27/03/2019 08:57

On the Ryanair website you can scan your bag to see if it's acceptable

Ninninannanoonoo · 27/03/2019 11:01

I fly with Ryanair a lot. If you have a rucksack they are very unlikely to measure it as along as it will comfortably fit under the seat in front. I suspect that my rucksack probably exceeds their allowed dimensions but they never give it a second glance. Unless it is one of those giant "expedition" type bags which carries sleeping bags etc you should be fine. They are much more likely to get arsey about hard-sided wheely cases or anything which looks like it will need to go in the overhead locker. Probably not relevant to your DS but even if you haven't paid the extra, everyone is allowed to take a duty free bag too (which is bonkers as you can't necessarily fit both under the seat in front) I flew back last week with an enormous gift box in a paper bag as well as my rucksack.

BarbaraofSevillle · 27/03/2019 13:16

How long is the trip and is everything he needs to take going to fit in a small rucksack?

youmeandconchitawurst · 27/03/2019 13:22

I was picked up twice for trying to carry on a rucksack which definitely fits under the seat in front, but it's bigger than the stated rules. It was just after the change in rules though so things may have relaxed. Not sure I'd want to try it if it's someone else getting to pay the extra. Also, you can get around it by buying priority boarding (gets you two items - old and new carry on sizes), but this is limited and often sells out on popular flights - leaving you to pay a fortune to check a bag. Argh.

BarbaraofSevillle · 27/03/2019 13:53

You can check in a 10 kg bag for only slightly more than what it costs to take it on plane as priorty.
