Lunch bill

We went to a chain pub/restaurant type place today. More upmarket than a Harvester but not fancy by any means.

2 of us. Each had a starter and a main, and shared a bottle of house wine. How much would you say would be a reasonable bill for that?

Starts £5 each main course £12-15 each and wine £22 so £56

HolidayReads · 24/03/2019 17:21

I was on the same wavelength as you guys.

It was eighty bloody quid!!!

Wasn't even that nice. Probably won't return.

@Bookworm4 the point of this is I was interested to see how much people thought the bill would come to....thought that was pretty clear.

Feel free to scroll past though if this doesn't interest you Smile

That’s loads for a chain pub type place. How did it come to that much?

IggyAce · 24/03/2019 17:27

Bloody heck op that’s steep our lovely local independently owned restaurant only cost dh and I about £45 last Saturday night. We had a starter and main each and I had a bottle of fruit cider and dh had a craft larger.

bigchris · 24/03/2019 17:27

Everyone we go to zizzi, Prezzo or ask I'm amazed at the bill

It's the soft drinks the kids have and the large glasses of wine I have Grin

HolidayReads · 24/03/2019 17:30

I know! It's our fault, we should have checked how much everything was but we're pretty comfortable money-wise and as we were in an average chain and went for mundane chicken roast dinners we just didn't think to add all the prices up before we ordered.

Big ds and I are off to zizzi in a bit! Lucky o have Tesco vouchers!

Lobsterquadrille2 · 24/03/2019 17:37

It was probably the bottle of house white. They can be £25 - £30. I used to be FC for a hotel chain and that's easily where we made the largest profit, by a long way.

CakeNinja · 24/03/2019 17:47

I wouldn’t think twice about spending £80 on lunch for 2, but I despise spending absolutely any amount of money on shit food. How annoying!

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/03/2019 17:59

But a bottle of house wine isn't £25-30 in an average chain, more around £15, did the £80 include any service?

Next time go to Toby Carvery. It's nice enough and £9 for a roast on a Sunday. A starter will be a fiver, and a bottle of wine say £15, so under £50 even including a decent tip. Are you sure they didn't charge you for the next table as well?

bigchris · 24/03/2019 18:01

youarenotkiddingme
That's where we always go wrong, we never have vouchers Grin

bigchris · 24/03/2019 18:02

Barbara depends where you live I guess

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/03/2019 18:02

But even a good pub Sunday lunch would be about £10-15 for the main, £5 for the starter and £20 for the wine makes about £55, say £60 with tip.

£80 for what you describe is madness.

Singlenotsingle · 24/03/2019 18:03

£10 each for the main, £5 each for the starters, £12 for the wine. £42 plus vat.

bigchris · 24/03/2019 18:04

Just checked menu

Ask bottle of white ranges from 15 quid to 25 quid

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/03/2019 18:04

Or it wasn't an 'average chain' that the OP went to, but somewhere more upmarket, but she didn't realise from the ambience/menu etc.

I always at least glance at the prices, to get a feel for what it's going to end up costing, so notice if, say most mains are more than £15, starters are over a fiver, or house wine is more than £15/16 a bottle.

bigchris · 24/03/2019 18:05

Oooh could you have fallen for payjng for water that wasnt tap ?

itssquidstella · 24/03/2019 18:06

£30 a head?

Ellabella989 · 24/03/2019 18:14

Wagamamas is another very overpriced chain (although I do love it). My partner and I had 1 starter between us, 2 mains and 2 soft drinks and it came to almost £50 :-/

Lobsterquadrille2 · 24/03/2019 18:15

Starters £8.50 each, mains £15 each, house wine £24, service @12% £9 = £80.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 24/03/2019 18:17

12.5%

SleepingStandingUp · 24/03/2019 18:20

I'd have assume £7 for a starter, £13 for a main and £20 for the wine so 60 in total.

So if the wine was £30, that's £10 for a starter and £15 for main?

Creamwhite · 24/03/2019 18:22

£50

strathmore · 24/03/2019 18:35

Where do you get wine for under £25 a bottle? In a restaurant?

I would have said £90-£100

£25 - 30 for wine
£8-10 each for starter
£15-20 each for mains

Plus tip
