Ganglion cyst - doctor?

GnocchiGnocchi · 21/03/2019 13:41

I have what I am pretty sure is a ganglion cyst on the inside of my wrist. It seemed to come out of nowhere. Doesn't hurt. Probably about 1cm wide.

I know they're not harmful but Dr Google says sometimes there are other cysts that are similar that may need removing, even though they're benign also.

Do I need to see a doctor? Seems like a waste of their time for a minor lump but equally I don't want to miss anything.

I had one on my wrist and read somewhere to hit it with a bible. Obviously some old wives tale but I whacked it with a big thick book and poof, gone. It distributed the fluid that had collected perhaps? But I've not had one since

DoneLikeAKipper · 21/03/2019 15:27

I have had them on and off since my teen years, and the NHS won’t deal with them in my area. I’ve had my current one nearly 5 years now, it’s noticeably large and pressing on a nerve/tendon, they still won’t drain or remove it. I’m just going to jab it with a sterilised needle one of these days....

BinaryStar · 21/03/2019 15:28

Leave it alone. I get them from time to time and they go away eventually. The cure is generally worse than the disease with these. I wouldn’t bother the doctor unless causing other issues.

Hit it with a book. It really does work.

GnocchiGnocchi · 21/03/2019 16:07

Lol, thanks everyone. Will find a large heavy book tonight!!

You only need to see someone if it's uncomfortable. I have had one removed in the past as it used to ache all the time. It was also uncomfortable when I drove due to its position and the position of my hands on the steering wheel.
It came back again 4 yrs later!

GooodMythicalMorning · 21/03/2019 16:10

my mother swears bathing it in salt 3 days in a row helps, no idea if it does but cant hurt.

Palominoo · 21/03/2019 16:23

My mother had one and smashed it with a hammer. No problems afterwards.

Not sure if I would.

DoneLikeAKipper · 21/03/2019 16:47

My mother had one and smashed it with a hammer.

She’s brave! I’ve tried the book method several times, mines not having it. It’s feels like one of those hard little rubber balls I used to get in party bags as a kid, and nothing I’ve tried will make it bugger off. I’m starting to think mine will be there forever unless I can save enough to go private (or find Dr Pimple to deal with it).

GnocchiGnocchi · 21/03/2019 17:36

What do yours feel like? Mine is rock solid, almost as if the bone has warped

I had one for several years, felt very hard and book-hitting didn't work for me, but it just disappeared after a while. Doctor just said wait and see, even though it was definitely uncomfortable and prominent. I think I read that the NHS isn't paying for removal anymore anyway though?

Giraffeski · 21/03/2019 18:28

I had one (well, a synovial cyst but not much difference) removed from inside my wrist joint last week- it was picked up by an MRI due to ongoing stiffness and pain in my wrist. It didn't stick out as it was inside the wrist joint.

It was quite large (3-4cm ish).

DinosApple · 21/03/2019 18:36

DD had one as a baby, I didn't smash it with a book ShockGrin, but I did massage and give it a hard rub, then I felt it 'go'. It's never come back.

Mmmhmmokdear · 21/03/2019 18:46

I get them a lot, they usually come & go. I've never whacked one though! Keep an eye on it and definitely see the GP if it's painful or starts to restrict your movement. I've only ever had one removed as it was massive and becoming very awkward and painful.

Nix32 · 21/03/2019 18:50

I've got one on my wrist - rock solid, definitely no fluid. Been there for years. Had one appear in the same place on the other wrist but that one's disappeared.

Bizarrely, my 8 year old daughter has one in the same place.

Witchend · 21/03/2019 19:00

Dh won't let me whack his. I'm most disappointed. I even arranged to borrow the church's big Bible. The GP told dm when she had one that the cure was officially to hit it with the family Bible.

Xenadog · 21/03/2019 19:05

I had one on the top of my foot. The first time I flexed my foot and felt it pop. For a couple of days my foot was puffy but then all fine. It cam back so I then hit it with a heavy book and it went and hasn’t been back.

Howzaboutye · 21/03/2019 19:08

A hard back Harry potter book is better than a Bible.
Slightly different ends of the literary spectrum!

Howzaboutye · 21/03/2019 19:08

I mean for popping a ganglion! Not in general! Lol

MyAuntyBadger · 21/03/2019 19:14

I had one on the back of my wrist, like a marble under the skin. I asked someone to hit it with a mallet and within a few days it had gone and has never been back.

Bigfatyellow · 21/03/2019 19:19

You're taking hammers to yourselves?

GnocchiGnocchi · 21/03/2019 20:27

I have had 3 removed from the same place in my left (non-dominant) wrist. All 3 were large and affected normal use of my arm including pain when it knocked against anything; tingling when it pressed on nerves and issues with movement when it grew. If I were to get another one in the same place I’d push for removal again because of my previous issues.

GooodMythicalMorning · 22/03/2019 00:16

makes feel sick at the thought of hitting the one on my ankle.

FenceFuckery · 22/03/2019 05:37

I had one on my big toe. I had it removed (private insurance as it needed a full general!) as it was impacting on my ability to wear shoes.

Madness that I had to be put under, but the number of nerve endings on your feet mean a local wouldn’t have worked. I now have a decent scar, and it still feels weird when I wear some shoes that press on it.
