I'm going to have to throw them away. They stink and they're making me sneeze Hmm. I've never noticed this before and the ones I got last week were fine. These are the bog standard trumpet ones from the supermarket.

yeah, I was worried that the cats had been up to no good. back to tulips I think.

I hate daffodils because of their pissy smell.
I’ve noticed this for years though, not just this year!
My lovely MIL often pops round in the spring with little bunches for me, I put them in the downstairs loo because I never go in there, hate pissy daffs.

Varietal (and there are thousands of them), and age (they are cold stored between cropping and shop display so could potentially be quite old, 3 weeks at very most storage is usual, any more really not good), and the temperature of the room you have your vase will also have an effect.

Yes, daffs stink of cat piss!

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 23/03/2019 15:42

Yup, another owner of cat pee daffodils. Such a shame because they look so pretty and really brighten up the house.

*DontcallmeCharlotte" tulips are a bit weird aren't they. Walking round the vase, leaning out and peering round corners as they do...

Is it maybe the water in the vase that’s smelling? I’ve had daffodils in the house every spring for over 30 years, and they’ve always smelled gorgeous. I grow two kinds, white narcissi with an orange centre, and the standard yellow ones, and they’re both lovely in a vase with a few sprays of forsythia. Wouldn’t be Spring without them!

We stayed in a B&B recently, where they had a huge vase full of them. Horrible. But not as bad as Hyacinths.

Just popping on to say there has been a musty smell in my kitchen which I thought was the drains and remembered seeing this thread about smelly daffs, sniffed the daffs and it is them.

And the way tulips carry on growing... I adore a big bunch of mixed colour tulips but they scare me after a few days.

StealthPolarBear · 31/03/2019 08:41

I've always thought this. Don't understand why they're so loved. And liles.

Ronsters · 31/03/2019 09:05

I really love daffodils but some can smell a bit, it reminds me of dirty water ( and I've checked the water they were in was clean).
