Does anyone have any tips for smelly arm pits?

I kind of have a problem. I sweat an excessive amount even during winter. And my body odour is quite sharp, its embaressing and Im very self conscious of it esp as im entering a new relationship.. Does anyone use any specific products or have a routine that involves their pits? I hope I'm not alone in that sometimes I smell, im a relatively clean woman but I cant help my overactive sweat glands.

Any advice would be widely appreciated!

Driclor is fab - I went from terrible sweaty pits to absolutely bone dry confidence! Also there is a washing detergent called Halo which will get the smell out of any clothes, great for sports kit.

bloodywhitecat · 20/03/2019 22:24

Driclor. Follow the instructions to the letter, use before bed, wash and dry the skin thoroughly, apply two strokes each side and allow to dry. In the morning wash it off and apply something like Mitchum. Driclor saved my sanity, I have the same problem as you and before Driclor I would leave the house freshly showered and with a good antiperspirant applied and be wet under the arms before I had driven a mile down the road. Now I don't have to worry about how I smell or about wet patches under the arms.

Another vote here for Driclor. I was so paranoid and never raised my arms - for me, this stuff has been life changing.

Honestly everyone on the old “soap” thread were astonished to find it didn’t actually make your skin dry. Any soap at all is worth a try but if you’d like to splash out, then L’Occitane do gorgeous ones. But even the most basic non-branded one will be almost guaranteed to work. I’m a total evangelical convert - better, cleaner, cheaper, way more ecologically-friendly. I can’t for the life of me figure out how I ever get swindled into switching to shower gel in the first place!

Make sure it’s proper soap - stuff like Dove is a “cleansing bar” and isn’t actual soap.

And yes while it could be an actual medical condition, it’s worth giving the non-medical measures a try first. Do seek help from your doctor of course if it’s excessive and causing you distress.

lotusbell · 20/03/2019 22:27

@DanglyBangly, yes you do. I like Driclor and the Sure Maximum stick. Putting on before bed is key although you can use the Sure one as a 'normal' stick deo. About £5 I think. Driclor is stronger and stings but you can reduce usage after a certain time I think.

Redwinestillfine · 20/03/2019 22:28

Soap, Mitchel and have you experimented with your diet? Eating different foods may help?

Soap. I use Cidal ,, fresh grapefruit smell and about a quid for two bars at Savers. Sure roll on deodorant.

I also switched from laundry pods to Bold washing powder. Whilst I wouldn’t say I was a smelly person , I feel much fresher now. My teenage son used to stink as did his clothes. He also switched to soap and with me using soap powder for clothes they don’t smell after washing ( which they used to).

DontCallMeCharlotte · 20/03/2019 22:34

With putting on deodrant at night, what happens if you bathe in the mornings (as I do)?

lilabet2 · 20/03/2019 22:38

Use regular bar soap under your arms twice a day because shower gel apparently isn't as good for people who sweat more.

Apply roll-on, not spray deodorant for the same reason.

I saw these tips on a medical programme.

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 20/03/2019 22:39

Just adding to the chorus of soap instead of shower gel, also I use sure maximum at night although since I've been using soap instead of shower gel I no longer need to use the extra strong deodorant except in sumner

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 20/03/2019 22:42

DontCallMeCharlotte certain types of deodorant work on your sweat glands overnight so you dont sweat the next day, so washing the next morning wouldn't stop the product from working.

Not a very technical answer but its along those linesSmile

Chilledout11 · 20/03/2019 22:46

I think it is likely to be in your clothes so spray with vinegar before washing (pound shops sell spray vinegar)

Shelbybear · 20/03/2019 22:48

Odaban, works wonders.

bloodywhitecat · 20/03/2019 22:50

@DontCallMeCharlotte I just wash under my arms before applying the Driclor then shower as usual in the morning. You need to wash it off before you apply your regular stuff anyway. I am down to only using Driclor when the familiar tingle starts making itself known again 9about once every 2-3 weeks).

lilabet2 · 20/03/2019 22:52

Oh also apart from obviously showering/bathing twice per day. Fabrics that you wear make a difference so cotton is much better than Polyester.

Femodene · 20/03/2019 22:53

WHat everyone else said-soap bar, etc but I also use a salt stick (from Superdrug) on my armpits when I get out of the shower, dry them a bit then rub the salt stick on until the skin is dry, then app,y my anti perspirerants. When I don’t use it I can really notice I smell a lot more.

TheFillijonk · 20/03/2019 23:05

Definitely wash with bar soap ... I use cuticura (anti bacterial soap from Boots) Sure Maximum cream stick. Wash clothes with a slosh of Dettol laundry cleanser to minimise lingering sweat smells on clothes.

Dreamzcancometrue · 20/03/2019 23:20

Thanks for all your suggestions!

Might just try this driclor !!

Odaban from amazon and/or only put on antip. etc. at night before bed, don't wash pits before, shower/wash as normal in the morn - don't be tempted to respray after shower. I speak as a sweaty, smelly person who is much better!

HighsandLows77 · 21/03/2019 00:51

Wash with a bar of soap then cut half a lemon and squeeze lemon juice on your armpits. It works !

Nofilter · 21/03/2019 01:06

This was a life changer for me. Stops them sweating 100%.

I wear colourful clothes again now!

If you want something to help with odor, natural deo balms like Native Unearthed's are amazing! As for actually stopping you sweating I can only say that Mitcham's been effective for me.

Bicarbonate of soda and wash with normal soap. If you can bear it, try avoiding deodorant for a few days and then try a different brand. I didn't use to have smelly pits but I started using a different deodorant and suddenly it was awful. I stopped using deodorant altogether and took a bar of soap, a few dry face cloths and a couple of spare t-shirts to work, svc used bicarb on my armpits. I live in a hot country (40+) I washed whenever I felt too sweaty. I started to have less odor until I could change brands and I use a lot less deoderant. Soak the pits of your clothes in bicarb and lemon juice before you wash them. It gets rid of the residue of deodorant and the lingering smell.
