Amazing Edinburgh Hotel

Looking for ideas for DH and I to spend a couple of days away for 50th birthday. Just wondered what hotels are good at the moment.

I see the George is now the Principal and the Principal is now the Kimpton. I have stayed at neither.

I have stayed at the Balmoral, the Howard and the Scotsman. Loved them all but would like to try somewhere new.

Also where is good for dinner. Is Tom Kitchin in Leith still good.

Tom kitchen is still good .
For a total experience you could stay in The Witchery . It’s quite something .

The Sheraton has a really nice spa with a rooftop pool.

I stayed at the Holyrood Hotel and thought it was lovely. It was a good few years ago though.

chemenger · 19/03/2019 12:17

Prestonfield is very hard to beat. Not right in the city centre but very spectacular, service is perfect and the public rooms and bedrooms are beautiful (unless you are in to minimalism, it is the opposite of sleek modern). The restaurant, Rhubarb, is also very good, even if you don’t stay there. They do a lovely afternoon tea as well.

Belindabelle · 19/03/2019 12:30

Witchery is full on my dates. I had forgotten about Prestonfield. I remember wanting to stay there years ago. I will google the other suggestions too. Thanks

The rooms at 21212
Amazing dinner too

BackinTimeforBeer · 19/03/2019 12:41

Dh has stayed at The Bonham a few times - such a personal thing though.

venusandmars · 19/03/2019 12:45

No. 11 in Bruswick Street is lovely to stay in. Eat at 21212 or Martin Wishart in Leith

Imnotswallowingthat · 19/03/2019 12:55

The Glasshouse is the best I've stayed at in Edinburgh. Especially if you get one of the Calton Hill suites which open out onto a fabulous rooftop garden.

chemenger · 19/03/2019 13:00

Dinner at 21212 is a bit marmite. We really disliked it, and the service was snotty as well, they really respond badly to any mild criticism. So when I said I felt the desert was too sweet for me it was explained in no uncertain terms that the chef knew better. Do they still serve the disgusting warm cereal milk in a Macdonals sauce pot? I know other people really like it though, and it’s a while since we went. Martin Wishart or Tom Kitchin are more reliable, I think.

chemenger · 19/03/2019 14:35

The Honours, which is Martin Wishart's bistro on Hanover (?) St is very nice for a slightly less extravagant meal. I also like the Harvey Nichols restaurant, especially if you get a window table, cocktails are good there too. Michael Neave's Kitchen and Whisky Bar, just off the Royal Mile, is also very nice.

Belindabelle · 19/03/2019 15:13

Thank you all.

Liking the look of Fingal but both Martin Wishart and The Kitchin are full for dinner. Could have lunch at MW but would prefer dinner. Michael Neave has also been recommended by a friend.

I had forgotten how great Edinburgh is.

If it was me I would go for Prestonfield and just stay there all weekend! In fact that is where I spent my 50th birthday.

RosieBooBoo · 19/03/2019 15:23

The Waldolf Astoria (known to locals as the cally) is lovely. The afternoon tea there is gorge as well

chemenger · 19/03/2019 15:26

I ca also endorse the afternoon tea at what will always be the Caledonian to me, no matter that the sign says Waldorf. But if you are having dinner afternoon tea might not be a good idea.

OP I'm so so jealous...went with DH and DD last March for first time since I was a kid. Loved our family trip but we both agreed it would be amazing next time just the two of us mainly coz licensing laws seemed way stricter than here and we weren't allowed in many bars with DD even in the day.

I'd recommend The Dogs for their v reasonable set lunch and martinis to get tipsy in the afternoon. I had whiskey rice pudding for dessert best I've ever eaten.

For an informal lunch El Castro was excellent, v tasty tacos.

I WANT TO COME WITH YOU Grin

youmeandconchitawurst · 19/03/2019 15:38

Another unimpressed with 21212. Just really average for the price point. Witchery is crap too (was served rotten crab). Kitchn is good. No.1 is good. Castle terrace is meh. Aizle gets a great write up but I've never been able to get a table.

madminimoomin · 19/03/2019 15:39

The Raeburn in Stockbridge.

madminimoomin · 19/03/2019 15:42

@tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz the dogs has closed now :-(

chemenger · 19/03/2019 16:15

For a lovely lunch Cafe St Honore is an old Edinburgh stalwart, classic french food in a nice room. La Garrigue is similar, very friendly french restaurant, slightly off the Royal Mile.

I'm making myself homesick now.

Belindabelle · 19/03/2019 16:21

Right if I am honest I would prefer a country house hotel and Prestonfield has that vibe I think.

I wanted to go the the Three Chimneys on Skye but we don't have the time. I liked the look of Monacyle Mhor but have heard it's gone down hill and they don't have availability anyway. I have looked at Fonab Castle but it seems a bit resort like? We stayed at Gleneagles for our anniversary. I loved certain aspects but overall found it too big and busy.

Any other ideas? Will go anywhere within 2-3 hours of Stirling.

Madmin oh that's a shame! Really liked it there.

JustNotSureWhatToDo · 19/03/2019 17:16

I second the Raeburn in Stockbridge - had a lovely time there - Stockbridge is gorgeous and just a walk into town - I ate at the restaurant opposite / think that's was the Kitchin?

ThomasShelbysBunnet · 19/03/2019 17:22

Not Edinburgh but St Andrews. I've recently stayed at both the Fairmont and Kinnettles and they were fabulous.
