Where in uk is still good to live?

We would love to move back to the UK but we see so much on the news about high levels of crime. Where in the UK is still safe and friendly place to live? Found schools, cost of living, health care, plenty to do and see?

Lots of places, totally depends on what you want. City, country, coast etc. Plus you presumably need to factor in where you'd be working.

SallyWD · 18/03/2019 10:03

Norwich is lovely and Exeter.

BikeRunSki · 18/03/2019 10:09

Town, country, north, south? There are a few corners of the UK which are not ghetto war zones.

MaMaMaMySharona · 18/03/2019 10:11

I live in Cheshire which is still pretty lovely!

Backseatonthebus · 18/03/2019 10:13

Have a look here. So much useful information, and you can look at the country by individual indices such as crime by using the buttons at the top of the page.

AssassinatedBeauty · 18/03/2019 10:14

Most of the UK. The image you see via the media is always going to show the worst of the worst. Nothing interesting in reporting about no crime.

Do you have any idea about the general area that you're interested in living in?

Asdf12345 · 18/03/2019 10:14

I’ve lived all over the uk and never had worries about crime. Have a look at the actual figures and compare to elsewhere then consider where you fancy.

For the most part issues are in small areas and relate almost exclusively to scrotes interacting with other scrotes.

BeGoodTanya · 18/03/2019 10:16

What do you mean by 'still'?

Bluesheep8 · 18/03/2019 10:20

Do you have any requirements op? Where I live is great, in my opinion. West Yorkshire.

^^ This. If you're not in a gang, or in the habit of waving a weapon around to show how hard you are, a lot of crime will not feature in your day to day life, except on the news.

Surburbs of northern cities are good. Easy access to both city attractions like restaurants, theatre, music, shopping etc, as well as proper countryside too and much more affordable than the south.

tryanotherway · 18/03/2019 10:25

Thanks for your replies. Like many people I suffer with anxiety and I think this is heightened seeing all the news reports! We definitely don't want to be in the middle of nowhere/isolated, we love the sea and countryside but after living in the middle of nowhere we realise we need more things to do and see. So plenty of shops, restaurants, theatre, good school in an area that is friendly. We have a young child so a good school is really important. We're really open to location.

We live on the Isle of Wight which is lovely. Tbh, most places we have family are 'still' lovely.

GoFiguire · 18/03/2019 10:25

Ipswich.
Peterborough.
Scunthorpe.

All the best cities.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/03/2019 10:30

London 🤷‍♀️

Plenty to do and statistically VERY unlikely to be a victim of crime

I appreciate that what I've said is in direct contrast to sensationalist press but I feel safer in London than anywhere I've ever lived (and I've lived all over)

Just don't be young, carry a knife or hang out in parks in the dark

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 18/03/2019 10:31

Do you mean uk or England? I live I. The north of Scotland and it ticks all you boxes to some extent. We certainly have low crime, we have good places to eat a theatre in Inverness that attracts good shows. I am far enough away from Inverness that I feel like I’m not in town but live in a large village with lots of shops and amenities and good schools.
It really depends where you want to end up I’m sure there are places like this all over.

Jenniferyellowcat · 18/03/2019 10:37

Try Hampshire. Good schools, the coast nearby, countryside, the new forest. Southampton has loads going on theatre/music/culture wise with new restaurants opening all the time. It’s an hour from London on the train.

BikeRunSki · 18/03/2019 11:43

Rural West Yorkshire, around Holmfirth/Denby Dale/Penistone (actually S Yorks that one).

BikeRunSki · 18/03/2019 11:44

Also Marsden/Melthsm/Slaithwaite

KrazyKatlady · 18/03/2019 11:52

This is a really vague question!! surely where you live will be determined by work availabilty /job opportunities , family (if living here) and budget .....and then work out the best place going off those criteria?

tryanotherway · 18/03/2019 11:59

Hi, thanks... I know it's very vague but we really are very open with location. We work for ourselves which gives us more freedom in terms of work. No family in the equation, so it really is down to getting a nice location, not too expensive. I'm sure there are many options but we are looking for recommendations as it's hard to know where to start.

I live in Staffordshire near Lichfield and have never been a victim of crime or know anyone who has.

I like being central, transport links are great for the major cities but we don't get the problems associated with them, it's also nice not having huge journeys if we fancy a short break at the coast.

We seem to get decent weather too and the big storms fizzle out by the time they get to us.

We do plan to relocate to around Shrewsbury though when the kids are older, we both love Shropshire, even though it's the next County across it has a totally different feel, more relaxed, lots of little villages and sparsely populated.

ChiaraRimini · 18/03/2019 12:42

I really wouldn't be planning to move to the U.K. because of Brexit OP, the country is about to go swiftly downhill.

Asdf12345 · 19/03/2019 11:49

It’s worth bearing in mind Scotland comes with its own taxation rates and they are likely to keep increasing relative to the rest of the UK. It’s nice there but the north of England offers much the same stuff for comparable prices but at lower tax burdens, depending how much you earn the difference may be considerable.

coffeekittens · 19/03/2019 11:56

Shropshire. There’s lots to do in Shrewsbury town (theatre, shops, lots of restaurants, cinema, leisure centres etc) but also countryside, you’re just over an hours drive from the beach in Wales as well as Snowdonia if that’s your kind of thing. There’s also train lines to Manchester, Birmingham and London as well as being closeish to both Manchester and Birmingham airport.

I’m from London but am very happy here as is my six year old, who goes to an amazing school with a fantastic group of friends.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 19/03/2019 12:05

Kenilworth! It's beautiful, has a lovely school, the castle is perfect year-round and there's enough to do to keep younger and older DC entertained. Plus a lovely sunday lunch at the Queen and Castle, and it's close enough to bigger cities (50 minutes via train to London) without feeling hemmed-in. I love it.
