Where in uk is still good to live?

We would love to move back to the UK but we see so much on the news about high levels of crime. Where in the UK is still safe and friendly place to live? Found schools, cost of living, health care, plenty to do and see?

Tom Naylor-Leyland has transformed Martin and it’s now the foodie capital of the North.

I assume that you mean Malton. It really isn't!

InspirationUnavailable · 19/03/2019 21:32

When was the last time you visited Malton ohtheroses? Because the high street is unrecognisable from 10 years ago. It may not be everyone’s taste but to argue that it doesn’t punch above it’s weight in terms of cafe culture, small businesses and high street amenities is unfair. At the end of the day it’s still a rural northern town serving an agricultural community but that doesn’t mean its devoid of culture. And while we’re at it, Leeds is one of the UK’s largest cities - to reduce its cultural scene to your views of one theatre is being deliberately obtuse.

OhTheRoses · 19/03/2019 21:39

Malton 2005. Will never return. Wetherby was nice. Whitby was ghastly.

I accept that Leeds is a large City but that doesn't make it well cultured. The City centre indicates it is not. Manchester and Newcastle wipe the floor with it, as do Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Disagree with Ipswich.....

Chocolatepeanuts · 19/03/2019 21:50

Derry would tick all your boxes, small city, absolutely amazing beaches and scenery nearby.

sighrollseyes · 19/03/2019 21:52

In your post you say you want good health care. There are huge huge disparities in health care provision in this country and typically the more rural you get the poorer the healthcare provision.

HellAndDegenerates · 19/03/2019 21:55

Beverley.

It's a small town just outside Hull. Way reach if city, country, beaches, universities, new tech companies etc etc.

A lot has changed since 2005, I would recommend a trip back. Spring bank holiday is always lovely for the weekend-long food festival.

Oxford

James Martin.

How are you with regional accents? There are a couple of places i would move to for the accent alone!!

Zofrasi · 20/03/2019 00:04

Tottenham.

leaveachocforme · 20/03/2019 14:37

Thank you again for all your detailed responses. I'm working through them and making a spreadsheet!! 😂 the UK is a beautiful place and I certainly didn't mean anything by "still", in fact I don't know why I added that. So many beautiful places it's difficult to choose. House budget will be around £300k just looking for 2 bed, downsizing 😀

Hecketyheck · 20/03/2019 14:43

Plymouth - sandwiched between the sea and the moor, with a reasonable theatre.

DelilahfromDenmark · 20/03/2019 20:52

I would say Dorset, Somerset, Devon or Cornwall. They’re all lovely.

CallarMorvern · 20/03/2019 21:33

Lancaster. We were happy there. It's nicely placed, within easy reach of the Lake district, but also close to the motorway network for Manchester and beyond.
Good schools, decently priced houses, lovely surrounding countryside for good walks. Nice villages near by.
Traffic can be a bit rubbish though.

We were also happy on the Notts/Lincs border. Lovely village called Collingham and others, shockingly cheap houses. Close to Lincoln for the small city vibe, or Nottingham.
