Hotels in Dublin

Can anyone recommend a hotel for 2 nights in Dublin? I’m looking to treat my DP for his birthday next year and go 16th-18th March so we are there for St Patrick’s day. Ive never been and don’t know the area at all so have no idea where to start. We would want to stay in the city centre. Thanks!

Not been over for about 6 years now but we have always stayed at the Arlington. It’s the opposite side of the Liffey to Temple Bar and Grafton Street, but very central and everything is within easy walking distance. The restaurant is lovely if you don’t want to eat out and the huge bar has a great atmosphere.

Thanks I’ll take a look at that now!

The Arlington is as central as you can get. It's a little basic/shabby but has fabulous staff which makes it a great place to stay. It was also quiet despite its central location.
Otherwise there's the Shelbourne and The Fitzwilliam on Stephen's Green.
If you don't mind not being central Dun Laoghaire is my favourite area and has easy access to the city centre. The Royal Marine hotel is nice but has rubbish staff.

We stayed in the Conrad once and the Trinity Capital another. Both lovely and fairly central. I loved the Trinity though. Quite quirky and really near Temple Bar (but not too near!)

Look up the charleville lodge hotel aka the white moose cafe. It may appeal to you or not but lets just say its never dull.

I enjoyed a stay at Buswell’s Hotel for a New Year break a while back. On the website gallery it looks like it’s had a refurb since I was there too. It’s in a quiet area that’s only 10 minutes gentle stroll from Grafton Street, 15 or so from Temple Bar.

The Royal Marine hotel is nice but has rubbish staff.
Some of the staff are lovely. It's the supervisor types that are snotty and unhelpful.
Alternative on Stephen's Green - The Green.

I've stayed at the Harding Hotel a few times and have always found it to be really good, it's located between Temple Bar and Christ Church Cathedral which it overlooks.

i love the herbert park - its southside
or the gibson is fun and a good location

We stayed in the Drury Court a few weeks back and it was brilliant. Spotless, quiet, spacious rooms, lovely staff and the breakfast on the Sunday morning was amazing.

Only if you want to be insulted by its publicity hungry "social media star" HYPOCRITE of an owner

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 18/03/2019 12:08

Also charvile lodge is no where near the city centre

oh4forkssake · 18/03/2019 12:11

What's your budget OP? There are tonnes of hotels in Dublin and knowing your budget will help us to advise on some good options.

Sakura7 · 18/03/2019 12:20

Jurys Christchurch is a good option. Also there are lots of nice hotels in Ballsbridge which is slightly outside the city centre but just a quick hop in on the Dart or bus. It's a bit quiet on weekends but it's a nice area with some lovely restaurants and bars.

WhoNose21 · 18/03/2019 15:36

Thanks for all the suggestions, I looked on booking.com at The Arlington and it came up as over £1500 for the 2 nights I’m looking for. My budget isnt too high, probably £300 in total which I know isn’t a lot but hopefully it’ll get us somewhere nice and also central.

A lot of places I’ve looked at say no availability so I’m not sure if I’m trying to book too far in advance or whether they are already sold out due to it being St Patrick’s day.

I’d highly recommend Ariel House B&B - quite a large bed and breakfast so feels more like a hotel, wonderful staff and one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had. It’s in Ballsbridge, nice suburb just outside city centre (south side) and well serviced by bus/DART.

isabellerossignol · 18/03/2019 15:50

I've actually never stayed in a bad hotel in Dublin, the standards are pretty good.

I really like the Sandymount Hotel, but it's not in the city centre, although it's very convenient to the Dart stop.

Also really like the Camden Court hotel.

But honestly, every one I've stayed in has been great. I've never stayed in a hotel in Dublin where the room wasn't clean, or the shower didn't work or anything like that.

Sakura7 · 18/03/2019 21:38

Also if prices are high it's because it's St Patrick's weekend. I'm from Dublin and I avoid the city like the plague that weekend, as do most of my friends. The parade is an experience I suppose, but once you've seen one marching band you've seen them all. The city will be very very busy and messy. But this is from a local perspective, maybe someone else can comment on what's it's like from a visitor's perspective. There are other events apart from the parade.

I suppose the point I'm making is that I'm not sure the exorbitant prices you'd pay that weekend are really worth it.

The no availability thing is probably because it's so far in advance.

cstaff · 18/03/2019 21:42

Paddy's weekend is probably the most expensive weekend of the whole year and the very weekend I would avoid but then I am a dub. Even the flights will be more expensive that weekend. I would come over any other time.

Peridot1 · 18/03/2019 21:49

I would avoid that weekend to be honest. Madly expensive and madly busy. I would go either of the weekends either side. You’ll have a much better time.

BoomTish · 18/03/2019 21:55

I think you’re very unlikely to find anything in your budget, unfortunately.

I’d second what others have said and avoid St. Patrick’s weekend, unless you have a special affinity for it. The city gets mobbed, thousands upon thousands of people fly in for it, it’s crowded, and can get messy as the night goes on.

For hotels in your budget (for normal weekends!) you’ll have to go quite a bit outside of the city. Maybe look at the Red Cow and get the Luas (tram) in to the city? It’s about a 30 min trip.

pinkground202 · 18/03/2019 21:56

The Haddington is Dun Laoghaire is much nicer that the Royal Marine. It's right on the sea front, lovely restaurant too. 5 min walk to the train station and a very scenic 20 min train ride into town.

I would chose it over a city centre hotel for St Patrick's weekend as it will be noisy/crowded/messy in town.

ScouseQueen · 18/03/2019 21:58

The Holiday Inn Express in the centre of town is good, clean, nice staff, air conditioned. It's not got history but as a place to stay I couldn't fault it.

pinkground202 · 18/03/2019 21:59

The Alex hotel near Merrion Square is very central and recently had a refurbishment.
