Hotels in Dublin

Can anyone recommend a hotel for 2 nights in Dublin? I’m looking to treat my DP for his birthday next year and go 16th-18th March so we are there for St Patrick’s day. Ive never been and don’t know the area at all so have no idea where to start. We would want to stay in the city centre. Thanks!

I like the Shelbourne and the Dean. The Dylan is lovely but a little way out of the action. Not stayed at the Devlin but the restaurant there is cool.

Iveagh court is good value and walking distance of st Stephens green but as everyone else's says st Patrick's day will be the priciest day if the year. I'd avoid it.

Sometimes you can get good deals if you book a flight and hotel package on Expedia, I normally do that for weekends away.

I'm from Dublin and concur with previous posters... I would choose another w/end. The city centre of Dublin on Saint Patrick's w/end is avoided by most locals (except maybe the younger crowd) We have a public holiday first Monday in May and first Monday in June and I would suggest these as good alternatives.
I would also agree with Dun Laoghaire (south of city) recommendation as the DART (local overland train) can have you in the centre in 20 mins and it's a gorgeous sea side locations with some lovely bars and restaurants and more locals to give you s better feel for Ireland. There is a great artisan market in the park there on Sunday mornings... great for festival type atmosphere.
Another suggestion would be the area Malahide (north of city) which has a gorgeous marina, again many lovely bars and restaurants is closer to the airport but further from the city centre (but still has a DART service)

I am from Dublin and stayed in the jury’s inn in Christchurch this year with a friend visiting from London. Couldn’t fault it. It was so central for us going out. My dh booked it as a surprise for me and I was pleasantly surprised. As there’s so much happening, you be out more than in.

I’m usually a 5 star hotel kinda person but we literally had showers and slept for 4 hours in the room. And he paid a fair whack for that (would’ve cost him €25 in a taxi for us but he didn’t want the baby and toddler asking ‘where’s mammy?!’) but it would be in budget and 5 mins to Grafton Street! Beware of the weather though. Snow or sun! This day last year there was snowZ same on paddy’s day

I’m laughing at the suggestions of the Shelbourne etc when the OP has already posted that her budget is about £300 for both nights.

Even the 3 star Holiday Inn Express comes to about £190/night midweek in early February 2020.

We liked the spencer hotel though dd insisted she saw a ghost 😁

I also think the 6 nations is likely in Dublin that weekend next year and likely the Ireland v England match so all hotels will be packed and/ or very expensive.

I would say for your budget mid week is your best bet. Dublin is very expensive to stay eat and drink especially temple bar.

The royal marine (already mentioned by a pp) or grand in malahide are on the outskirts but good dart (rail) links into the city centre. I'd suggest looking outside the city centre.

Kelly's hotel on George's street is a great location but over a bar - if you plan on being out till pubs close yourself it could be a good option.

There's a Maldron on clanbrassil street/Kevin street or the new Aloft which are both new enough and probably reasonably priced, both about ten minutes walk from the centre.

The maldron in Smithfield is also often cheap, and a tram ride or walk to the centre.

Agree with others though I would avoid Patrick's weekend by choice. I think rooms become available about six months out usually so wouldn't worry just yet.

The Trinity Capital is our favourite, really good location, close to Temple Bar. We stayed there on our Honeymoon.

ThedietstartsonMonday · 18/03/2019 23:07

I've also stayed at The Sandymount which is slightly out of the centre but cheap and fast to get into the Centre by train. A nice place to stay.

I’ve stayed on st Stephens on the green - quiet and looks over the park (obv!) though no lift so if there’s any mobility issues it’s not for you. Fabulous staff.

Also stayed at the Gibson - super modern, at the end of the tram line so easy to get in and out of town and it’s quiet. Lovely staff.

I’d find it hard to choose between them - both quite luxurious in their own way

Ok thanks a lot for all your recommendations! I’ve taken a look at them all and most of them are out of my (very low I know!) price range. Maybe I will avoid st Patrick’s day and go the week after when it’s a little less manic. Or if anyone has any other recommendations for a city break to celebrate a big birthday please let me know!

Thanks again Flowers

Wow, over £1500 for the Arlington? I’ve bpnever paid anywhere near that, I suggested it coz it’s reasonably priced (usually)!

But, St Patrick’s day weekend, 6 nations, they’ve massively inflated their room rates.

I’d look at going a different weekend.

What about Belfast? Much cheaper than Dublin. And smaller, but plenty to do to fill a weekend and has some great restaurants etc

ChablisLover · 19/03/2019 10:33

I'd second Belfast (home city) or Derry - great vibe up there lots to do and see in both places and cheaper too

MadisonAvenue · 19/03/2019 13:34

I’ll third Belfast Grin
I prefer it to Dublin, there’s a great vibe to it and I’ve always found it a really friendly place. One of my favourite cities to visit.

turkeyboots · 19/03/2019 13:38

The Radisson Blu is central and nice. Not normally too expensive, but might be crazy expensive on Patricks weekend. Cork or Galway would be a nice alternative.
