My dog ate half a chocolate brownie, will he be OK?

He's a big 32kg lab. I've weighed the other half of the brownie and it weighs 30g so that will be around the weight of the half he ate.

I didn't make them, they were a present and are strong so I suspect dark chocolate was used in them which is what worries me. I've left a message with the emergency vet but I'm worried sick.

Mine ate a whole advent calendar and a bar of green and blacks once, had the runs and terrible farts for a couple of days but was fine (also a lab but about 25kg).

Sammiejo12 · 17/03/2019 13:23

Yes he'll be fine. Mine have eaten all sorts over the years including rat poison, chocolate, grapes, animals and cooked chicken and they are ranging from 7 to 14 now.... so 30g of chocolate isn't going to kill him.

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 17/03/2019 13:24

I think he’ll be fine, our two year old husky once ate 3 double choc chip muffins and was fine! He also once ate three portions of a very onion/garlicky beef stew and 6 dumplings and was fine...just lay with a big grin on his big stupid fat face! Dickhead!

Mine brought down the xmas tree a few times, bloody chocolate coins. Actually sat at the table on xmas day with 10 other guests and the tree landed on my head. Bloody labradors.

whippersnapperwrapper · 17/03/2019 13:25

My mum's beagle ate a box of liqueur chocs one Xmas, just had a hangover, didn't learn its lesson either !

Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 17/03/2019 13:25

Find out the exact ingredients - I’ve read some very worrying stories and dogs react differently

Palominoo · 17/03/2019 13:26

He will most likely be fine. Its the theobromine in chocolate that causes harm. Milk chocolate has little or none and the darker the chocolate the higher the concentration.

AS he's a lab, he has a large body mass so a small dose may not bother him at all.

Mine had severe Poisoning and his breathing was laboured and then he was rushed to vets and made to be sick and then kept on a drip and observed for 2r hours. He's fine.

Singlenotsingle · 17/03/2019 13:27

A dog of mine once ate a whole tin of Cadbury's Roses, complete with wrappers. He wasn't even sick!

HarrySnotter · 17/03/2019 13:29

I'm thinking that as it was dark chocolate and the brownie was 30g that if you take out the flour and sugar etc that there probably isn't that much actual chocolate/cocoa in the brownie? Or I might just be trying to make myself feel better.

There are some online calculators that will tell you how much to worry about for the size of dog. A lot of brownie will be flour, egg etc so I reckon it’ll be fine. But might set your mind at rest.
Btw I know this as ours ate Bournville ...!

Myshinynewname · 17/03/2019 13:30

Look on the vets now website. They have a really good calculator which considers the weight of the dog, the amount and type of chocolate and gives you a degree of risk and signs to look out for. Personally I would take him to the vet.

HarrySnotter · 17/03/2019 13:30

He does have form for this kind of thing - I only turned my back for a second and he was asleep in the living room when I left it. Fucking dickhead bloody dog.

He’s a Lab, he can’t help himself. AimlessDog has eaten many things in his 13 years that should have cause major damage -xmas pudding, box of Thornton’s, chocolate profiteroles to name a few. He’s always been fine. When we spoke to the vet about the Thornton’s she laughed - if it had been 75% or more chocs she’ have him in, but she was happy for us to watch and wait. Few sparkly poos later (the tinfoil) he was fine.

8dayweek · 17/03/2019 13:34

The amount of chocolate should be fine (the online calculators can be quite reassuring) but check with the person who made them what exactly is in them - there was a big warning on Crufts about baking with xylitol and how this stuff, whilst great for humans, is incredibly toxic to dogs.

I don't know how to get in touch with them - they were made by some fancy schmancy company and came through the post. I'd be surprised if they were made with xylitol for that reason.

My Bichon ( aged 7 months old at the time ) ate a good chunk ( approx quarter ) of black forest gateaux! He had a lot of diarrhoea after it but was ok . I'd say a lab should be ok but keep an eye on him xxx

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 17/03/2019 13:38

He should be ok. It's not a lot for his weight just keep an eye on him and go straight to vets if he seems out of sorts or ill. He might vomit later if it really disagrees with him.

safariboot · 17/03/2019 13:40

A quick Google for a calculator finds

www.vets-now.com/dog-chocolate-toxicity-calculator/

And even if it was 30g of strong dark chocolate, it says be prepared to take the dog to a vet if it's unwell. The brownie will be less poisonous still.

So yeah, keep an eye on him, but he only needs to see a vet if he actually gets ill.

HarrySnotter · 17/03/2019 13:43

Emergency vet says to keep an eye on him and let them know if he comes ill. He's snoring like a pig right now.

My lab cross ate 1/2 a tub of celebrations.
Only realised when he shat out the wrappers. I had blamed DH.
Dog was fine

rebecca102 · 17/03/2019 13:48

Yes

QuestionableMouse · 17/03/2019 14:00

My jack Russell decided to eat a pair of this melt in the middle puds. He was absolutely fine, sort from some really rancid farts (though I'm blaming the egg and flour for those)

SmarmyMrMime · 17/03/2019 14:11

My dog ate a 16 pack of kit kats. Literally. I didn't envy her when the foil passed through and excited!

Being a brownie and mostly cake and low quantity of dark chocolate should be fine.

8dayweek · 17/03/2019 14:34

@HarrySnotter Any ingredients list on their website or similar? Or a social media page you could message.

I knew xylitol was toxic to dogs but it wasn't until I saw the piece on Crufts that I realised quite how bad. I would think most places would be upfront if they'd used it though - calling them sugar free or marketing them as a "healthier" brownie?

HarrySnotter · 17/03/2019 14:40

@8dayweek have checked the FB page - they're def not marketed as a healthier option and there's no mention of them being sugar-free. I'm watching him like a hawk!
